Message from our Principal……………………….
It is so hard to believe that February and March are here. I keep thinking how wonderful this year has been so far.
Our 8th graders are working hard knowing that everything they are doing is helping them prepare for high school and
the 7th graders are no longer the new students but are fully immersed in our daily routines here at SRMS. There is
still a full quarter of school left and it is so important that everyone finishes strong.
There are many things to look forward to in the upcoming months. Multi- Cultural Week will take place starting Feb.
21 and will culminate with the Multi-Cultural Dinner on Friday, Feb. 24. All week long, our students will be able to
listen to and see people from other cultures. Friday Night Multi-Cultural Dinner is a special event for the whole
community. There will be foods from around the world offered at reasonable prices with an evening of free
entertainment. The event starts at 5:30 on Friday, Feb. 24. Please join us!
Also in February is 6th Grade Orientation Night. This event is on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Our 7th and 8th grade students
will have a minimum day with school dismissed at 12:30. Starting at 6:30 PM in the gym, parents and families of
future 7th graders are invited to the gym to listen to a description of our school. Following this, classrooms and
teachers will be available to share more information about each subject area. Please make sure to pass this
information along to current 6th graders interested in coming to our school.
I want to thank Carol Hemenway who came back from retirement to work as our Attendance Tech for the first part
of the year. Dora Tejeda is our new Attendance Tech and she will be answering the phones and helping when
students are absent or have appointments through the day. Thank you, Carol, and we will miss you! Welcome Dora
to the SRMS community.
I am so grateful to be a part of this special school community. We have staff members committed to helping
students, making connections with them and making sure they are successful. We have a fantastic parent community
who is supportive of all that is happening here. Finally, we have a great group of students that make me smile every
day I am here. Thank you everyone for your support.

Es difícil creer que febrero y marzo están aquí. Sigo pensando lo maravilloso que ha sido este año hasta ahora.
Nuestros estudiantes de 8vo grado están trabajando duro sabiendo que todo lo que están haciendo es ayudarles a
prepararse para la escuela secundaria y los alumnos de 7 º grado ya no son los nuevos estudiantes, sino que están
inmersos en nuestras rutinas diarias aquí en SRMS. Todavía queda un cuarto completo de la escuela y es tan
importante que todos terminen fuerte.
Hay muchas cosas que esperar en los próximos meses. La Semana Multicultural se llevará a cabo a partir del 21 de
febrero y culminará con la Cena Multicultural el viernes 24 de febrero. Durante toda la semana, nuestros estudiantes
podrán escuchar y ver gente de otras culturas. La cena multicultural por la noche del viernes es un evento especial
para toda la comunidad. Habrá alimentos de todo el mundo ofrecidos a precios razonables con una noche de
entretenimiento gratuito. El evento comienza a las 5:30 el viernes, 24 de febrero. ¡Por favor Venga!
También en febrero es Noche de orientación de 6to grado. Este evento es el miércoles, 15 de febrero. Nuestros
estudiantes de los grados 7 y 8 tendrán un día mínimo con la escuela despedida a las 12:30. A partir de las 6:30 PM
en el gimnasio, los padres y las familias de los futuros estudiantes de 7º grado son invitados al gimnasio para
escuchar una descripción de nuestra escuela. Después de esto, los salones y maestros estarán disponibles para
compartir más información sobre cada área temática. Por favor, asegúrese de pasar esta información a los estudiantes
de 6to grado que estén interesados en venir a nuestra escuela.
Quiero agradecer a Carol Hemenway que regresó de su jubilación para trabajar en nuestra oficina de Asistencia
durante la primera parte del año. Dora Tejeda es nuestra nueva Tecnología de Asistencia y ella estará contestando los

We want all students to be safe, responsible and respectful here
at Santa Rosa Middle School. However, we realize that
conflicts do occur. When a student has a conflict with another
person, he or she should let an adult know about it. Parents,
teachers, counselors, Restorative Resource Specialist, and
administrators are all people that students can come to when
they have a problem. Please encourage your son or daughter to
use these people as a resource to help solve problems here at
school.
Queremos que todos los estudiantes estén seguros,
responsables y acertados aquí en Santa Rosa Middle School.
Sin embargo, realizamos que los conflictos debidos ocurren.
Cuando un estudiante tiene un conflicto con otra persona, él o
ella deberían avisar a un adulto. Los padres, los maestros, los

Students walking and riding bicycles to school need to be aware
of traffic. Please remind your children to
look carefully when crossing streets and not
to assume that drivers are watching out for
them. Also, if adults are harassing or
bothering someone on the way to school or
after school, the student should come to the office immediately
so police can be called.
This is a reminder to all students and parents that students
should not bring personal electronic devices to school. IPods
and other personal music devices should be left at home. If they
are brought to school, these devices should not be used during
the school day. Cell phones, and electronic devices
should be turned off and in their lockers until after
school.
Respect and responsibility are taught and modeled throughout
the day. Every day our students listen to a message on what it
means to be a responsible, caring person. We want our students
to understand that they have choices in the world and that they
can choose to make good choices every day.
This year all students will be tested with the Smarter Balanced
Assessment Test which will start after Spring Break. Students
will be using computers to take this test and will be tested in
English and Mathematics. 8th graders will also be tested in
Science on the computers this year. Please make sure your
child is well rested and fed during the testing times for optimal
performance.

ser conscientes del tráfico. Por favor recordar a sus hijos a

casa. Si los traen a la escuela, estos dispositivos no deben ser

casilleros.
El respecto y la responsabilidad son enseñados y modelados
durante el día. Cada día nuestros estudiantes escuchan un
mensaje en lo que es ser una persona responsable. Queremos
que nuestros estudiantes entiendan que ellos tienen opciones
en el mundo y que ellos pueden decidir hacer opciones buenas
cada día.
Este año todos los estudiantes tomaran la prueba evaluación

Santa Rosa Middle School Prepares for Emergencies
Santa Rosa Middle School has a plan in place to deal with a variety of emergencies. We work with local emergency agencies
including Santa Rosa Police to evaluate and update our emergency plans. It is very important that each student’s Emergency
Card is kept up to date with so that we may know to whom we may release your child in case of emergency. Our Student
Release area is at the gate on 5th street on the south side of the campus between rooms 67 and 68.
Please plan to pick up your student ONLY from the 5 th St. gate. In order for our staff to maintain records of who has been picked
up, we must not have any student taken from the campus except from that gate. We are trying to avoid a chaotic exodus from the
site.
In the event of a major emergency, there are things you can do to help us to be prepared. Talk with your child about who is on
the Emergency Card you have turned in to the office. Tell your child to wait for the Student Release process to take place and
follow the directions of the staff at school. You and your child will feel more secure knowing students will be kept safely at
school until a parent or designated person is able to pick them up.

Santa Rosa Middle School tiene un plan para a variedad de situaciones de emergencia. Trabajamos con las agencias locales de
emergencia como La Póliza de Santa Rosa para evaluar y actualizar los planes de emergencia. Es muy importante que mantiene
la Tarjeta de Emergencia de cada estudiante lo que podemos saber a quién recoger su hijo / hija en caso de emergencia. Nuestra

de quién está en el tarjeta de emergencia que se han convertido en la oficina. Dígale a su hijo/hija que se espere hasta que el
proceso de Entrega de Estudiantes se haga y que siga las instrucciones del personal de la escuela. Usted y su hijo/ hija se sentirá
más seguro sabiendo que los estudiantes están seguros en la escuela hasta que el padre o la persona designada los recoja.

Family Engagement, Connecting and Empowering Parents
Family Engagement Facilitator provides support, and serves
as a liaison between school, parents and students.
Maintain a Family Engagement Center, open Monday –
Friday, 7:30 am. – 4:00 p.m.
Administer and score CELDT, maintain records, and answer
questions parents might have about scores.
Assist parents with whatever they might need, fill out forms,
help them find community resources, or set up a meeting with
teacher.
Assist teachers in contacting parent, relaying a message, or
translating for meeting.
Translate letters, or information sent home, for teachers, and
school events.
Help monitor student attendance, contact parents if needed.

any school property.
6. Gum chewing is not allowed on campus.
7. Permanent markers are not allowed.
8. Inappropriate behavior, writing, or pictures is
unacceptable.
9. Honesty is expected. No cheating, plagiarism, or collusion
will be tolerated.
10. No harassment of any kind will be tolerated. This includes
bullying, sexual harassment, and any unwelcome
aggressive behavior.
11. CELL Phones are not allowed during
the school day and must be kept in
lockers at all times.

COUNSELING CORNER
Happy New Year! The majority of school
holidays are now past. The next few months will
be packed full of academics and activities as 8 th
graders prepare to become high schoolers and our 7 th graders
work hard to become the leaders on the SRMS campus.
We encourage you and your student to seek our services.
Students can drop into the counseling office before school, at
break or after school as well as receiving permission from their
teachers, during class time, to come to our office. Students can
also leave notes for us with our secretary in the counseling
office. Parents can reach us by phone at 528-5397. We work
with students on all social, emotional, and academic areas.
Student Change of Address and Email Notification
So much mail comes back to SRMS every month
due to change of addresses. If you are in the
process of moving, have recently moved or if you
have a phone number or email change, please call
Sheila in the Counseling Office, 528-5397 as soon
as possible. We know that you want to stay informed of your
student’s education and we rely on the mail and phone
system to communicate with you.
6th Grade Orientation Night
Come see and explore Santa Rosa Middle School. SRMS
will be hosting our 6th Grade Orientation Night on February
15th at 6:30 pm in the gym. All students and parents of
potential SRMS Cougars are invited. A brief introduction to
SRMS will begin the evening and will be followed by
introductions to the various department chairs, counselors,
administrators and various leadership kids currently attending
SRMS. It is a wonderful night where incoming 6 th graders and
their parents can feel a part of the SRMS family.
Registration for 2017-2018 School Year
SRMS Counselors are working hard to get ready for
next year. We have found that the earlier we
organize the registration process, the more smoothly the process
goes. Current 7th graders will be given elective packets through
their teacher the week of February 27th – March 3rd, 2017.
These completed forms are due back to the counseling office
by March 8th. If students do not turn in their elective sheet,
counselors will be forced to choose an elective for the student.
ATTENTION ALL 7TH GRADE PARENTS
If your child has been attending Santa Rosa Middle School this
year on either an INTER or INTRA-District Transfer for the
2015/2016 school year, you do not need to do anything to
remain at SRMS for 8th grade.
Tips for Parents on How to Academically
Support Their Student
It is our aim to inform parents/guardians as early as possible if
their students are in need of interventions and additional
support. Every six weeks or so, a grade report is generated for
students. If your child is receiving a C- or below in any class,
he/she will receive an Interim Progress Report alerting you of
this fact. In addition, all students receive Quarter Grades which,
again, will alert you if there is a grade issue that can be
ameliorated before the end of the semester.
Remember, only Semester Grades are recorded
on your child’s permanent transcript.
Agendas: Every student at SRMS receives an
agenda at the beginning of the school year. The
agenda should be used every day to write down
the daily assignments in their classes. Parents can check this
agenda nightly to make sure the assignments are being written
down and can check the work their students have done. If you
are concerned that the assignments are not being written down,
you can ask your student to have each teacher initial the agenda
daily. This way the teacher can check for accuracy and open a
dialogue with the student.
Weekly Progress Reports: The counseling office
supplies students with daily and weekly progress
reports. These reports give the student and the parent
a picture of how the student is doing both
academically and behaviorally in class. We recommend NOT
waiting for a six-week grading report. This item also opens
dialogue with the teacher.
Homework Hot Line: Teachers have set up their voice mail
system to give students and parents a list of homework due
during the week. This is a great way to check the accuracy of
agendas as well as informing students of assignments when they
miss school due to illness or personal necessity. The teacher
numbers are enclosed in this Newsletter.
Home Access Center: If you have not already done so, you
can register for the Home Access Center on the main Santa
Rosa City School’s website at www.srcs.k12.ca.us. If you have
any questions, please call Laura White at 528-5397.
Parent/Teacher/Counselor Meeting: Students sometimes
struggle with the transition to middle school. Being an
adolescent is a hard job; the job which can be harder is that of
being parent to an adolescent. Many parents feel lost and “out
of the loop” when their students become more independent. If
you need help, call the counselors and we will work with you
and your student through this awkward time.
Grading Period: Parents receive grade reports from teachers
every six weeks. Quarter 3 is from 1/9/17 –
3/10/2017 & Quarter 4 is from 3/13/17 – 6/2/2017.
These reports are mailed home. Below are
important grading dates. Students who are in
danger of failing any course, receive a mailed
Interim Progress Report. The mailing dates are February
3, for Q3 & April 24th for Q4. Third Quarter grades are mailed
on March 22.
Computers and Cell Phones
At SRMS, we understand technology plays an increasing role
in our student's social and academic lives. Many of our
students own an electronic device and we understand the value
in having students learn to use a cell phone/computer.
However, we would like families to please help educate their
child how to be a responsible cyber-citizen. Here are a few
ideas:

Limit your child’s computer use. Set specific hours
when it is OK to use the computer.
Monitor your child’s computer “history” to see the
websites they are visiting.
Limit texting and, again, review your child’s phone
history.
Set aside specific times when all devices are turned off
(e.g., dinner time) and you and your child can speak to
each other uninterrupted.
Talk with your child about texting and computer abuse
and what the consequences can be for the victims.
Teach your child about empathy.
We get from our children what we expect and
what we model in our own behavior. The use and
abuse of technology is too pervasive to neglect
our children's behavior. For more ideas and

Deliveries to Students
Deliveries to students often result in
disruption to their classes. All deliveries
should be kept to a minimum. Absolutely NO
Balloons are allowed at school. Necessary
items should be taken to the Main Office to
be delivered as time permits.
SRMS MATH
The Math Departments main focus this
year is to encourage students to think
critically, explain their answers,
persevere in solving problems and work
collaboratively on mathematical problems.
You may notice that your child is working on more open-ended
mathematics problems. Encourage your child to explain her
thinking as she works through the problems. To help your
student you might want to remind her of the common problem
solving strategies such as: working backwards, building a
model/drawing a diagram, making lists, solving an easier
problem and guess and check. If your child needs guidance
here are three prompts to help her think through the problems.
1. What do you notice/wonder about the
problem/situation?
2. Is there an answer that would be
incorrect? How/Why?
3. What problems/strategies have you been working on
in class? How is this problem
similar/different?
We ask that you support your child in solving
the problems instead of solving it for

objetivo principal este año es animar a
los estudiantes a pensar críticamente,

colaboración en problemas matemáticos.
Usted puede notar que su hija está trabajando en problemas de
matemáticas más abiertas. Anime a su niña para explicar su
pensamiento como trabaja a través de los problemas. Para
ayudar a su estudiante tal vez quieras le recuerdan el problema
común de problemas estrategias tales como:
trabajar hacia atrás, para solucionar construyendo un
modelo/dibujo un diagrama, hacer listas, para resolver un

Multi-Cultural Fair

We’re off and running to start the 3rd Quarter in the
Physical Education classes. Our 7th grade classes have been
playing Badminton, and Golf, and end the quarter with Track
& Field. Our 8th grade classes are in a Hockey unit, as well as
participating in our fitness lab during the week, and end the
quarter with Field Games. All PE classes do monthly fitness
testing to prepare for the State Physical Fitness Testing during
the spring. All classes also spend one day a week in the
classroom working on Fitness For Life, which is our Health
based curriculum at SRMS. Ask your son/daughter to see their
Sportfolio?
We had a great 1st semester with our students, introducing
them to Speedminton, Pickelball, Frisbee, Orienteering,
Volleyball, Line Dancing, Folk Dancing, and
HOPSPORTS/CARDIO on Mondays. We also had a lot of fun
with the Turkey Trot, where we gave out 15 Turkeys, 20
Pumpkin Pies, 100 T-Shirts, 20 Sees Chocolate Turkeys, and
numerous dress passes. 180 students walked away with prizes
that day. Thank you to the families who donated to this cause.
As we approach the late Winter months, we still have plenty of
sweatshirts and sweatpants that your son/daughter may
purchase. Just have your student see their PE instructor. If
you need to contact the Boys PE office, the number is 5285052; the Girls PE office is 528-5051.

Nos vamos y en ejecución para iniciar el 3 º
Trimestre en la clases de Educación Física. Nuestras
clases de 7 º grado han estado jugando al bádminton
y golf, y al final del trimestre con Track & Field.
Nuestras clases de 8 º grado están participando en la
unidad de hockey, así como participando en nuestro
laboratorio físico durante la semana, y con juegos de
campo finales del trimestre. Todas las clases de
educación física toman pruebas mensuales para
prepararse para la Prueba de Aptitud Física de
Estado durante la primavera. Todas las clases
también pasan un día a la semana en el salón
trabajando en la Aptitud Para la Vida, que es nuestro
plan de estudios de salud basado en SRMS.

Hemos tenido un gran semestre primero con los

Science News
The beginning of the second half of our school year the
students in 8th grade classes have begun the study of
chemistry. In the 7th grade, Ms. Crow’s and Mr.
MacDevitt’s classes are exploring Human Body Systems
and Mrs. Wheatley’s students are investigating the natural
world through the study of Ecology, Classification and the
Plant and Animal Kingdoms.
The 8th grade science students
demonstrated their Science
Phenomenon Projects to the 7th graders
on the Wednesday before Winter
Break. They did a fantastic job
finishing the first semester strong.

In December, the several of the seventh grade
classes read the dramatization of A Christmas
Carol by Charles Dickens, which is in the seventh
grade literature book. The play worked well with
themes that appeared in The Pearl, the novel that
many classes had just completed. The students
will be able to make connections between several
of the characters. Many of the students also
enjoyed acting in the different scenes.
Currently, most classes are
studying Medieval Asia. Students
examine the belief systems and
achievements on the Asian
civilizations as well as how the countries were
ruled. There is a wealth of historical fiction
available for Asia so many teachers are using
novels like Mountain Light, The Master
Puppeteer, and The Sign of the Chrysanthemum
to enrich the cultural learning about either Japan
or China.
The teachers are providing a wealth of
opportunities for the students to show what they
have learned via hand-on activities like graphic
notes, research using various google apps, poetry
writing, essay writing, class discussions and many
more activities
At the completion of this unit, the seventh graders
will move on to Europe for the remainder of the
year as they review Rome, head into Medieval
Europe, then progress towards the Renaissance,
Reformation and Scientific Revolution.

In 8th grade English/History classes, students have been
moving through the history of the Revolutionary War
and its aftermath, including the
challenge of creating a viable
government. Students are
studying the Articles of
Confederation, its weaknesses, and
the problems in the early nation that prompted the
Constitutional Convention. Also included are an
exploration of the first two political parties, and the
conflicts between the Federalists and Anti-Federalists,
as represented by Alexander Hamilton and Thomas
Jefferson. Some classes are working on an activity
entitled “Meet the Press”, in which students take on the
role of 17th and 18th century thinkers, some of whose
ideas influenced the creation of our Constitution, and
are then interviewed by their classmates about the
question: “What is the best form of government?” To
go along with this historical study, several classes have
read novels set during the Revolutionary War, such as
The Fighting Ground, Johnny Tremain, and My Brother
Sam is Dead, or novels whose themes revolve around
the tension between governments and individual rights,
such as The Hunger Games. Students are keeping
reading logs, writing literary response essays, and
participating in class discussions of themes and
connections to the modern day. Others are working on
short and long-term research projects. On the horizon is
a study of Manifest Destiny and Westward Movement;
possible literature include Tom Sawyer or The Call of
the Wild. Others will be reading Shakespeare, or The
Diary of Anne Frank. Throughout their studies,
students in English/history classes are reinforcing the
core academic skills of reading complex texts closely
and deeply, citing evidence to support their conclusions,
both orally and in writing, and striving to make
meaningful connections between the material and their
own lives. They are making significant progress
towards being ready for high school.

7th grade Spanish students are
currently studying probably
the most popular unit; food and health. Of course, this
would not be as popular if it were not supplemented with
trips to Chelinos to order food in Spanish and then eat it!
Thank you to Chelino’s for feeding both our hungry 7 th and
8th graders year after year. We are also wading into the
wonders of Spanish grammar and verb conjugation!
8th graders have finished studying the house and family and
are now on clothing and shopping. Where would
vocabulary be without grammar? So we now reveal to
them the wonders of reflexive and past tense verbs!
Remember, two successful years of middle school Spanish
is the equivalent of one year of high school Spanish, so
most 8th graders will be going on to 2nd year Spanish
(Spanish 2). Some will be recommended for Honors
Spanish 2 if they have earned A’s in middle school and
shown an interest in speaking Spanish.
Los estudiantes de séptimo grado están estudiando la
unidad más popular; la comida y la salud. Claro, esto no
sería tan popular si no fuera por los viajes a Chelino’s,
donde piden su comida en español y la comen. Muchas
gracias a todos en Chelino’s por recibirnos durante tantos

intermedia equivalen a un año en la preparatoria. Así que
la mayoría de los estudiantes estudiarán el segundo año de
español (español 2) en noveno grado. Si su hijo(a) habla
español en casa también puede registrarse para la clase de
español para nativo hablantes.

Hace diez años que esta clase no existe en SRMS, y aquí
estamos otra vez. Es muy importante que los estudiantes que
ya hablan español al entrar en kínder siguen con sus estudios

vale por dos! Hemos leído varios cuentos en clase, investigado
varios temas a través de las enciclopedias y, mientras tanto,
hemos practicado la gramática y ortografía del idioma

7th grade
French
students have
completed their reports about French speaking
countries. We enjoyed learning about the many
fascinating and different cultural aspects of each
country. We are now studying La Vie Courante
(Everyday Life). We have learned how to say I am
hungry, I am thirsty and how to ask others if they
are. We now know how to say different food and
drinks in French and how to order them in a
cafe. This study allows us to learn new French
vocabulary using them in statements and
questions. We learn several new dialogues per
week. The class will soon make their own cafe
menus and role play visiting a French cafe. In
addition, they are learning about the French
holidays in January which include the Galette des
Rois and the sending of New Year cards to friends
and relatives.
8th grade French students have
been learning about the French holidays in
January. We enjoyed an authentic Galette des
Rois and served it using the typical French
ceremony. Also, each 8th grade student made
a New Year's card using French
vocabulary. They continue to
learn new vocabulary and use it
through speaking, listening and
writing. They are perfecting
their usage of conjugating er
verbs and applying them correctly. Also we are
expanding our use of adverbs and their
placement in sentences.
Both 7th and 8th grades will continue their
monthly field trips to local cafes, the last Friday
of each month. We expanded our field trips to
include December visits to the French
American Charter School in the Santa Rosa
District. The students had fun helping the
kindergartens with Christmas decorations as
well as visiting older classes to observe how
fluent the students are and how a French
school operates.
