specified to be listed indefinitely. After three months names can be

3rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
"He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father
and followed him." Peter, Andrew, James, and John's lives would never
be the same. They were going about their usual business--fishing on the
Sea of Galilee--when Jesus approached them and said, "Come after me."
And that's just what they did. "At once they left their nets and followed
him." Such a quick response to such a radical request!
What compelled these men to leave their livelihood to follow the Lord?
His promise to them was that he would make them "fishers of men."
Perhaps they thought that promise sounded fabulous. But it seems more
likely that it was Christ himself who drew the men. There must have
been something utterly attractive about him, and completely trustworthy. Otherwise, it seems unbelievable that these men would have been
so quick to respond to his call.
This compelling man is the same Christ who calls us. We hear his voice
in a different way, of course, through the Church and through the Bible,
through his Spirit in our hearts, but it is nonetheless the same Jesus of
Nazareth who asks us to follow him. Have we allowed ourselves to be
drawn by his voice? Are we open to a real encounter with the Lord who
changes lives?
If our relationship with Jesus does not transform us, if it does not change
us into different, better people moment by moment and day by day, then
chances are that we are not truly encountering him. He is too powerful
to be inconsequential. It might take some courage and commitment to
come into authentic contact with the Lord, but when we do, our lives
will never be the same.

DEACON CORNER: (BY DEACON AL)
Epiphany means revelation or manifestation. Epiphany was originally an
Eastern Church celebration. It was originally and primarily a celebration
of baptism, the first Epiphany or manifestation. As the celebration
moved westward, it took on the meaning of the revelation of Jesus to the
Gentiles. The central point of this celebration is that God’s salvation is
intended not only for the people of Israel, but for all people. The Greek
word “epiphany”, meaning manifestation or appearance was used most
often in ancient times to describe the king or ruler “showing himself”
before the people of the nation. During epiphany we see how God
epiphanies Himself through Jesus. It is the people of God empowered
with the gifts of the Holy Spirit who reveal the risen Christ to the world
through acts of creation, love, healing, and liberation.
The 12th night is a familiar title of a Shakespearian play and comes
from European heritage where 12th night parish parties were celebrated.
These parties have carried over into the Mardi Gras tradition. During the
party, at the appointed time, the king cake is brought out. Hidden in the
cake are three beans or coins. Those who find the “prizes” are crowned
kings or queens for the evening. While the “royalty” are being outfitted
for their office, the Christmas tree is stripped of all ornaments (German
Lutherans call this “plundering the tree”). The tree is removed from the
room and saved for the Lenten season when it is stripped of its branches
and made into a processional cross.
In many Hispanic communities Three Kings Day is just as big a celebration as Christmas itself. Many Hispanic children leave a shoe under
the Christmas tree. In the morning they find the shoes filled with small
treats, like candy, dolls or even money. The treats are from the three
wise men. In addition to the shoe tradition, families gather to eat a
Rosca De Reyes (wreath of kings). The Rosca De Reyes is a Spanish
and Latin American king’s cake pastry traditionally eaten to celebrate
Epiphany. Inside is a little baby that represents Jesus hiding from the
king. Whoever finds the baby has to throw a party.
BAPTISM
Do you have a child you’d like to have baptized? Baptisms are
celebrated once a month during one of the weekend Liturgies.
Parents should contact the parish at least two months prior to the
desired month of celebration and attend the preparation session.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: our par ish Baptism Ministr y is in
need of your help to welcome and prepare families seeking the
Sacrament of Baptism for their infants or young children and to
coordinate and shepherd these families on the day of the Baptism.

The Shepherd Center of Chesterfield is a non profit interfaith organization
dedicated to helping seniors in the community remain independent in their
own homes. Those residents of Chesterfield 50 years of age or older can
receive transportation to medical appointments, for prescription pick up
and for grocery shopping. All transportation is arranged through the Shepherd Center and is provided by volunteers. If you need transportation or

MARCH FOR LIFE
We are again hosting a bus to the March for Life in Washington DC on
Friday, January 27th, 2017 sponsored by Council 6189 Knights of
Columbus. The bus will arrive at St. Augustine Church at 7:30am for
pick-up, depart by 7:45am, and then proceed to the Altria Theater at
6 N. Laurel Street, in Richmond, near the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart,
for an 8:10am pickup and departure at 8:20am. The bus will leave DC at
3:30pm and return to Richmond at around 6 – 7pm. For reservations,

RACHEL’S VINEYARD RETREAT FOR HEALING AFTER
ABORTION A Rachel’s Vineyard Weekend Retreat will be held February 17-19 at The Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center in Toano, VA
sponsored by St. Joan of Arc Church. The weekend retreat includes:
spiritual exercises, the sacrament of reconciliation, a Memorial Service
and a Mass of Entrustment and is available to women, men and any

Cinco Minutos Con el Diácono Al
Epifanía significa revelación o manifestación. La Epifanía fue originalmente una celebración de la Iglesia Oriental. Fue originalmente y

Mardi Gras. Durante la fiesta, a la hora designada, se saca el pastel del
rey. En el pastel hay tres granos o monedas. Aquellos que encuentran
los "premios" son coronados reyes o reinas por la noche. Mientras que
la "realeza" se está equipando para su oficina, el árbol de navidad se
despoja de todos los ornamentos (los luteranos alemanes llaman esto
"pillar el árbol"). El árbol se retira de la habitación y se guarda para la
temporada Cuaresmal cuando se despoja de sus ramas y se convierte en
una cruz procesional.
En muchas comunidades hispanas, el Día de Reyes es una celebración tan grande como la Navidad misma. Muchos niños hispanos
dejan un zapato debajo del árbol de Navidad. Por la mañana encuentran
los zapatos llenos de pequeñas golosinas, como caramelos, muñecas o
incluso dinero. Las golosinas son de los tres hombres sabios. Además
de la tradición del calzado, las familias se reúnen para comer una Rosca De Reyes (corona de reyes). La Rosca De Reyes es una pastelería de
pastel de rey hispano y latinoamericano tradicionalmente comido para
celebrar la Epifanía. Dentro hay un pequeño bebé que representa a
Jesús escondido del rey. Quien encuentre al bebé tiene que hacer una
fiesta.
MINISTERIO DE LA FAMILIA SAN AGUSTIN
Este año estaremos dando inicio a este ministerio de la familia que es tan
importante para la integración familiar.
Pues la familia esta llamada a edificar el reino de Dios y participar activamente en la vida y misión de la iglesia. Los miembros de la familia, enseñados por la palabra de Dios, confrontados con los sacramentos y los auxilios de la gracia, e irradiando el espiritu del evangelio, vienen a ser una
proporción viva de la iglesia.
¿Quienes podrán participar en esta formación? Todas las par ejas de
hombres y mujeres casados y no casados, será una formación que se dará
mensual los días viernes por la noche de 7 - 8:30pm en el Hall iniciando el
27 de enero del 2017.

Compendio de la Doctrina social de la Iglesia y el Catecismo
Católico la definen como un cuerpo doctrinal renovado, que se
va articulando e medida que la Iglesia en la plenitude de la
Palabra revelada por Jesucristo y mediante la asistencia del
Espíritu Santo, lee los hechos según se desenvuelven en el
curso de la historia.

apartar un par de noches regularmente que trabaje para usted,
se le agradecería.

apartar unas horas en la semana para ayudar al personal de la
oficina en varias tareas, (archivos, contester/hacer llamadas,
hacer copias o poner insertos en el boletín)

REFLEXIONES
3er DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
El punto importante de este Evangelio es que el ministerio de
Juan Bautista ha terminado. Con su arresto, la tradición de los
profetas del Antiguo Testamento termina. Jesús entra, inaugurando una realidad nueva, llamando a Pedro, Andres y más adelante a Santiago y Juan hijos de Zebedeo. Ellos no dudaron en
seguirlo, se convirtieron en sus discípulos para proclamar el
Reino de Dios que Jesús anunciaba ahora. La humanidad ahora
se mueve de la oscuridad a una gran luz. Nuevas enseñanzas,
nuevas curaciones para todas clase de enfermedades. Llega una
nueva vida con la presencia de Dios en el mundo por medio de
su Hijo Jesús. ¿Qué podemos aprender nosotros de esta lectura
del Evangelio? ¿A qué nos mueven las lecturas, qué sentimientos
nos provocan?
Para vivir el misterio de Cristo en nuestra vida hay una clave y la
podemos ver ahora. Todo encuentro con Jesucristo provoca una
respuesta. El Evangelio de este domingo nos muestra la forma de
cómo respondieron sus primeros discípulos. "Rápido y decididos". Enfocados en Jesús. Si, así, lo hicieron ellos pasando por
todo durante la vida pública del Maestro. Y nosotros, ¿cómo lo
hacemos ahora? El Evangelista Mateo acierta el cien por ciento
al decir que la gran luz brillando en la oscuridad es Jesús. Creo
que todos hemos vivido los momentos de tensión a través del
país por la violencia de policías contra la comunidad y viceversa.
Sin embargo dentro de todo el problema siempre existen personas que nos conducen a esa luz que es Dios. Jesús hizo y hace
la misma invitación. "Conviértanse, porque ya está cerca el
Reino de los cielos" (Mt 4, 17).
