A local company is ready to
help families in San Antonio obtain the best insurance for their
needs during the New Year.
Affordable Health Insurance
Agency (AHIA) is available to
assist those who want to enroll in the Affordable Care Act
(ACA) to find insurance before
the deadline of Jan.31.
The agency’s secret formula
is working closely with several
top-rated insurance companies
so that clients can find the best
company that fits their personal
and financial needs, whether
they are looking for health insurance, senior supplements, property and casualty, life insurance,
annuity or dental and vision insurance. Since opening in 1995,
the multi-line insurance agency
has been on a mission to help
families analyze their insurance
needs and find an affordable
protection plan that will meet
the family’s requirements.
“We practice the same hos-
pitality that we would to our
own blood. To make the ambience more relaxing, we offer
refreshments to make the clients’
experience more comfortable,”
Founder/CEO Joe Chetwood
told La Prensa. “We want to
make sure that they are taken
care of… We have a lot of reps
that work with us in San Antonio, and we are very fortunate
that they practice the same philosophy from home and bring it
here to the office.”
Texas is the uninsured capital
of the United States, stated the
Texas Medical Association.
More than 4.3 million Texans,
including 623,000 children,
lack health insurance. In Bexar
County, 23 percent of people
under the age of 65 do not have
health insurance.
President Donald Trump announced that his first executive
order is going to be to dismantle
a piece of the ACA, which
many have predicted is going
to deflate. As of February 2016,
there are at least 20 million
Americans enrolled in the ACA

Apart from being the largest
demonstration, it was also the
most peaceful protest with zero
arrests made - a vast difference
from the 230 protesters that
were arrested in Washington,
D.C. alone on Inauguration
Day that now face felony rioting
charges as major establishment
buildings and vehicles were
destroyed.
San Antonio held its own
march on Saturday and began in
front of City Hall as an estimated
1,500 people protested locally.
They were joined by District 4
Councilman Rey Saldaña, who
had tweeted, “Democracy is
alive when citizens come off the
sidelines and activate their voice.
San Antonio has come to play.

from the event.

On Friday, Jan. 20, around
230,000 people gathered
around the National Mall area
in Washington, D.C. to witness
the inauguration of Donald
Trump as the 45th president of
the United States. On Saturday,
Jan. 21, more than 500,000
peaceful protesters gathered in
the same area to protest our new
president and his administration’s rhetoric.
The Women’s March on
Washington contributed to the
largest protest demonstration in
U.S. history. Crowd scientists
and public transportation systems have estimated that more
than 3 million citizens from
more than 500 cities all over the
country gathered and marched
in support of women’s rights,
LBGTQ rights, immigrant’s
rights and civil rights that they
feel are threatened with this new
administration.
The demonstration spread
with thousands protesting across
all seven continents, even Antarctica. Cities that drew the largest crowds included Chicago,
in which the march had to be
turned into a rally due to the
large number of attendees, Los
Angeles, New York and Austin.
“The tens of thousands of
women and men who locked
arms and marched in Austin
are ready to continue the fight.
Elected officials, from the White
House to the County Court
House, need to realize we will
be silent no more, and we will

the new president and praise the
actions of those who took to the
streets to protest earlier that day.
“The march today was great.
The message is important. It
could have been a whole lot of
groups marching. Somebody
said on TV, ‘What’s the message?’ The message is obvious.
Our president comes in with
the lowest rating of anybody
whoever came into the office.
There’s a majority of people
out there, since Hillary won the
popular vote, that don’t buy his
act,” he stated.

However, AHIA welcomes everyone to see what their options
are before the deadline. AHIA
has proved to be the trustworthy
company to rely on when you
are in need of coverage.
For the past 22 years, 95
photographer Arlene Mejorado
has traveled near and far photographing people in their natural
elements and cultures. Through
the “We the People” campaign,
she was presented with the opportunity to work with other artists such as Shepard Fairey, the
artist who created the Obama
“Hope” poster, to spread a unifying message in the form a photo
series of strong multi-cultural
women, one in which she got
to share with the entire nation.
“A lot of the women I have
crossed paths with in San Antonio are a powerful force of justice
and love. Last year, I had the
opportunity to work with some
amazing mujeres in organizing

the Woman’s Day March,” Mejorado told La Prensa. “These
women have been holding it
down for many years. It really
left an imprint on me about the
kind of people I want to photograph and highlight. Maribel
Valdez Gonzalez [photo subject]
is not only one of my best friends
in San Antonio, but an example
of the fierce women of color that
hold the city together. She is an
educator, a critical mind; and
for me, she is also a woman of
healing medicine.”
Through crowd funding and
national support, the campaign
created posters for Inauguration
Day and the Women’s March
and took out ads in major
newspapers to display powerful
images.
This campaign with the Amplifier Foundation has supported
Mejorado in celebrating just one
of the many faces that she thinks
represent the revolutionary and
forward thinkers of Texas.
“I am glad it is part of this international campaign. Women
all over the world have expressed that they identify with
the image and Maribel’s story
in some way. I have watched
people project their hopes and
dreams onto this art, and I am
glad it provides some comfort
and inspiration for so many
in these dark times. I feel overwhelmed with gratitude, and
tinued Chetwood. “We don’t
have a machine that answers the
phone, we always have a live
person… we have actually saved
our customers a lot of money…
Most of our clients, who have
renewed their benefits with us,
have switched companies four
or five different times because
every year, there is a company
that changes.”
In the future, AHIA would
like to expand with its clientele
and open more locations around
the region. As for now, AHIA is
ready for a year to help those in
need of any insurance, whether
they are new or current faces,
the full family experience. The
agency is also currently looking
to expand their dedicated team.
“We are always looking for
new agents that are interested in
helping the senior population…
We are always hiring and looking for people who feel good

I also feel socially responsible
to encourage more women to

percent of AHIA’s customers
are satisfied with their services.
They have expanded to more
than 100,000 clients, 40 employees, and 13 offices in Houston, McAllen, Austin, Del Rio
and El Paso to clients who are
eager to keep their health and
surroundings in check.
“I would say most of our clients are happy with the services
we provide because my staff
goes above and beyond,” con-
about what they do every day.
We get along with everybody,
and we are a family,” concluded
Chetwood.

IDEA Public Schools celebrates
National School Choice Week
By Jennifer Flores
This week, IDEA Public
Schools will join thousands of
schools, districts and communities in recognition of National
School Choice Week (NSCW).
NSCW is an initiative created
to shine a positive spotlight on
effective education options for
children, including traditional
public schools, public charter
schools, magnet schools, private
schools, online learning and
homeschooling.
IDEA believes that every child,
regardless of race or income,
should have access to a highquality education. Across our
regions, thousands of students
are in need of a quality education
and the achievement gap is starkly
present. More educational choice
and high-quality school options
can help reverse this trend.
Throughout the week, IDEA
will host and attend positive
events that celebrate school choice
options, while drawing attention
to the need for even greater education opportunities for children.
IDEA will end the week with its
2017-18 application deadline on
Jan. 27, followed by hosting the
annual IDEA lottery on Saturday,
Jan. 28 and randomly select the
students who will fill the coveted
spots for the upcoming school
year.
“As a parent, I value having the
choice to decide what school is
best for my child,” said Osvaldo
Leal, a parent at IDEA Brownsville. “Every parent wants the
best education for their child. We
want the best teachers who are
committed to providing a quality
education to their students, and I
found that at IDEA.”
Since 2001, IDEA Public
Schools has grown from a small
school with 150 students to
the fastest-growing network of
tuition-free, Pre-K-12 public
charter schools in the United
States. IDEA, which serves nearly
30,000 students at 51 schools
across the Rio Grande Valley,
Austin and San Antonio, continues to rank among the best charter schools in the state and nation,
and is on-track to maintain its placed on the waiting list, and throughout the year.

OBTENER PERMISO PARA LA CALIDAD DEL AGUA RENOVACION
PERMISO NO. WQ0001516000

COMENTARIO PUBLICO / REUNION PUBLICA.

Kawhi Leonard selected as starter
for the 2017 NBA All-Star Game
By Spurs Sports &
Entertainment
The NBA announced that
San Antonio Spurs forward
Kawhi Leonard has been selected to be a starter in the
2017 All-Star Game. The sixthyear Spur was voted by fans,
players and media into the
game to be held on Sunday,
Feb. 19 in New Orleans. Now
named a starter in back-toback seasons after making his
first All-Star appearance last
year, Leonard becomes the
fifth Spurs player in franchise
history to be selected as an
All-Star starter more than once,
joining George Gervin, Alvin
Robertson, David Robinson
and Tim Duncan.
Leonard has helped lead
the Spurs to a 33-9 record
this season and was part of
making 2016 San Antonio’s
winningest calendar year in
franchise history (66-15). The
NBA’s Defensive Player of the
Year in each of the last two
seasons, Leonard is averaging
career highs in points (24.8
ppg), assists (3.1 apg), free
throw percentage (.907, 253279) and minutes (33.2 mpg),
also posting 5.7 rebounds and
1.85 steals per game while
shooting .488 (318-651) from
the floor and .417 (80-192)
from long distance in 39 appearances.
The 2014 NBA Finals MVP
currently ranks fourth in the
NBA in free throw percentage, sixth in steals and 10th in
scoring. Posting 12 games with
30-or-more points, he has the
most 30-point games by a Spur
in the first half of the season
since David Robinson’s 13 in
1995-96. Leonard is the only
player in the NBA averaging at
least 20.0 points while shooting over 40.0 percent from
three-point range and 90.0 percent from the free throw line.
This season, Leonard made
his 300th career start and
registered 235 wins in those
games, the most of any player
in league history through 300
starts. Leonard currently has
the highest winning percentage
in NBA history (.780, 283-80)
out of all players who have
played at least 350 games.
His current 24.8 points per
game is the highest scoring
average by a Spurs player since
Duncan averaged 25.5 points
in his 2001-02 MVP season.
Having scored double figures
in each of the last 73 games,
Leonard’s active streak is the
longest by a Spur since Duncan’s 75 straight in 2005. With
30-or-more points in each of
his last four contests, Leonard
became the first player in San
Antonio franchise history to
ever post at least 30 points
while shooting at least 60.0
percent in four straight games.
Joining Leonard as Western
Conference starters are: Stephen Curry (Golden State),
James Harden (Houston), Kevin Durant (Golden State) and
Anthony Davis (New Orleans).
The 66th NBA All-Star Game
will tip off on Sunday, Feb. 19
at the Smoothie King Center in
New Orleans. The game will be
seen by fans in more than 200
countries and territories and
will be heard in more than 40
languages. TNT will televise
the All-Star Game in the U.S.
for the 15th consecutive year.
