THE BLESSING WE RECEIVE
The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is proclaimed in Numbers as the
special blessing for the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the
invocation of God’s loving kindness, the shining glory of God’s face turned
toward us in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God’s own
peace!
Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible
in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God’s face is
shown to us and God’s presence is made known to us in faithful and loving
kindness.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
“Octave” comes from the Latin word for “eight,” and
since eight is one step beyond seven, the number of days
in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection,
completion, and new beginnings. Early Christians called
Sunday the “eighth day,” since it was the day after the
Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord’s Day. By
the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after
Easter Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glorious
feast when people were forbidden to fast or kneel. In the
seventh century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too.
Christmas didn’t claim the honor of a continuous feast,
but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast
of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries until
1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the earlier tradition of celebrating Mary as Mother of God.

Students walk several paths that lead to Christ at ICS. This is not much different than the golden road that
Dorothy was on, as she made her way to The Wizard of Oz. Like her, our students have many people helping them
reach their des na on.
They have our priests, who o en include a lively and student focused lesson about the history of our Church during
our Wednesday masses. Students have learned that the mass can include prayers in the Greek and in Hebrew
languages. Our priests take the step-by-step approach of educa ng our students to help them be er understand our
Catholic Tradi on.
Just before going to Mass, we hold our Mission Mass gathering with all of our students. In this space, we usually
meet with Principal Zelenka, and he leads students to see God in our world and his relevance to their lives today. He
breaks down and explains the Mass readings in a way that is very engaging to students.
In the classrooms, students get daily opportuni es to delve deeper into Catholic Tradi ons and biblical teachings.
For example, in our literature class, our students make connec ons from the text to faith. In essence, we look for
God’s presence and his lessons in any story we read. Using the idea that “God is in the details”, we set out to purposely look for Him in books of varying genres. Con nuing on this path of the yellow brick road, monthly, students
will be going to Adora on. This is a wonderful opportunity for them to come into a closer and more personal relaonship with God. The visits to Adora on are amazing and life changing! This is the place where they will encounter
the living God.
Walking into ICS is like walking down the yellow brick road towards heaven. We are all on it because we want to
meet and see God. He has placed our great Priests, directors, and teachers on this path to help guide our students to
Him, while they learn about His love for them along the way.

present to Baby Jesus. The children of our parish will
bring the gifts to the crèche which will then be collected
and given to Catholic Charities Foundation of Life ministry.

Message from the Prayer Shawl Ministry
Dear Parishioners,
The purpose for our ministry is to provide comfort,
warmth, and love through the articles we hand crochet or knit. Among the items are shawls, lap blankets, baby blankets, and chemo caps. We provide
these items to those who are gravely sick, recovering
from surgery, a severe injury, fighting cancer, or
gravely sick infants/children. If you can knit or crochet, or would like to learn how to, please join our
ministry. We meet the 2nd Tuesday of every month
at 7:00 p.m. in the Faith Formation Office. Or if you
would like to help the ministry, donations of yarn are
always welcomed. Please call or visit the parish office if you or a loved one are in need of one of these

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
En Nicaragua y otras naciones latinoamericanas se celebra el final de un año con la “quema del año viejo”.
Construyen grandes muñecos con ropa vieja, pólvora y
papel que se encienden a medianoche entre los dos años.
Celebrar el comienzo de un año nuevo tiene una larga trayectoria en la historia humana. Hace unos 4000 años el
pueblo de Babilonia ya festejaba la llegada de un nuevo
año con grandes fiestas de primavera. Los judíos, al igual
que otros pueblos agrícolas, también celebraban su año
nuevo durante la primavera, el primer día de Nisán (a principios de abril).
Fue Julio César quien nos dio la fecha del primero de
enero como el inicio de nuestro calendario. En 1582 el Papa
Gregorio XIII reformó el calendario para darnos el que actualmente está en uso. No obstante, los cristianos continuaron celebrando el año nuevo en primavera para evitar los
excesos del “hombre viejo”. Hace 400 años la Iglesia comenzó a celebrar el día primero de enero buscando cristianizarlo lo mejor posible. Por eso en el calendario litúrgico este
día es dedicado a María, Madre de Dios.

el Señor te mire con benevolencia y te conceda la paz

A veces no queremos escucharle a nuestro conyugue, ni a nuestra voz interior, pero cuando escuchamos testimonios reales, nuestra buena voluntad
se fortalece. Invitamos a todas las parejas (casadas o
no casadas) para que participen de nuestro grupo para su crecimiento. Tenemos charlas todos los viernes
en el salón St. Francis 1 & 2 a las 7:30 pm sin costo
alguno. Ofrecemos cuidado de los niños.
