The family of GertrudeWambach wish to let the

Liturgical gestures like postures discussed
last week also foster unity and an expression
of reverence. Unfortunately, the ritual
gestures Catholics make during worship, are
probably endangered due to a lack of
understanding of the gestures and their
meanings. This can be expected when there
are few clear written rules or guidelines.
The result is a state of confusion due to a
lack of uniformity in practice.
By our ritual gestures ...this “body
language”—we unite the physical and
mental/spiritual aspects of our worship of
the Lord, and express our unity with Him
with our entire being. Recalling this may
help remind each of us to make the effort to
restore this ineffable and powerful “form of
speech” in our own acts of worship. With
our bodies and our minds united, we
express our love for Christ and witness to
others His love for all.” (Gestures for
Worship—Relearning Our Ritual Language,”
Adoremus Bulletin, February 2010)
Body Gestures:
 Trace the Sign of the Cross on our
foreheads, lips and hearts at the
beginning of the Gospel. This is because
it was by His death on the cross that
Christ redeemed the world.
 Striking our breast at the worlds through
my own fault strengthens our awareness
of sin being our fault. (Confiteor)
 In the Creed we are to bow at the words
which commemorate the
Incarnation:...by the power of the Holy
Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary and
became man.
This gesture signifies our profound
respect and gratitude to Christ who
shared our human condition in order to
save us from sin and restore us to
friendship with God.
The General Instruction draws attention
to the bowing of the head at certain
times during the Mass: “An inclination of
the head should be made when the three
Divine Persons are named, at the Name
Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the
Saint in whose honor the Mass is
celebrated.” (GIRM 275)
