The Alliance for Science: A Global Initiative for Science-based Communication Atu Darko Associate Director for Communications Cornell Alliance for Science Department of International Programs, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences E-mail: [email protected] Humanity is facing the grand challenge of ensuring access to safe nutritious food for an ever-increasing population without imposing negative impacts on the environment. Innovations in agriculture, such as the tools of biotechnology, should help us address this challenge. The Alliance for Science aims to unite, engage and empower a network of stakeholders and partners with the grassroots strategies needed for increased access to biotechnological innovations. The Alliance uses a people-focused, communications-driven approach to develop an integrated, global movement that trains and supports knowledgeable, empowered champions to build effective campaigns in their own regional contexts. In this presentation, I will share the methods that the Alliance for Science employs in order to educate and empower communications champions in the field of biotechnology. I will touch on our global work but will emphasize our programs and opportunities in Latin America. I will also spend some time discussing how the Alliance for Science is using new media and a campaign approach to build a global alliance and move the conversation around agricultural biotechnology toward one that is based on scientific evidence. Finally, I will present to the audience the Alliance for Science’s latest campaign “Climate for Change”.
