Now on this last Sunday of the church year, the Solemnity of Christ the King, this Jubilee Year is ended. Pope Francis this Sunday will close the Holy Door at St. Peter’s basilica so does all those designated holy doors around the world. God’s Mercy endures forever and does not end with the conclusion of the Jubilee. It is the celebration, the particular emphasis, the special privileges, special graces and indulgences, granted by the Church that is concluded. Next Sunday which is the first Sunday of Advent begins another new year or new cycle in church calendar commencing once again the normal cycle in church life, so to speak. At this time let us be filled with a sense of gratitude and thanksgiving to God for having granted us such an extraordinary time of grace. As we give thanks, let us entrust the life of the Church, all humankind, the entire world to the Lordship of Christ, asking him to continually pour out his mercy upon us. The Holy Year has been stepped in the message of mercy, enabling us to reflect more deeply on God’s mercy, to see how we benefit from and receive this mercy in our lives, and to remind ourselves how we are called to bring the good news and tenderness of God’s mercy to every person we meet. We are to keep in mind the directive of Jesus, which was the theme of the Jubilee Year: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” We are so grateful of the people in our parish who responded in concrete terms the message of the Jubilee. Many of you participated doing the “Garland of Mercy” – writing in red strips for the corporal works of mercy, in white strips for the spiritual works of mercy, and in the gold strips for acts of mercy received. For the past months we see this garland hanging on the foyer of our church’s main door. Now this garland is now right there on the altar. Those strips on the garland are profound symbol and visible sign of concrete acts of God’s mercy working through you. On this Solemnity of Christ the King, we are reminded that his throne is the Cross. Right there on the Cross our salvation is accomplished. We hear from this Sunday’s gospel that mercy is given to a sinner who was hanged beside him begging, “Lord remember me when you come into your kingdom.” To whom Jesus responded, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” May the Jubilee Year of Mercy live on as we continue sharing everyone the mercy our Lord and King always share with us. Few days from now we pause as a nation to give Thanks. In behalf of the Parish Staff, I would like to greet all in advance, “HAPPY THANKSGIVING.” Blessings to all and have a good week. Fr. Fr. Tony ST. NOVEMBER 20, 2016 Guidelines for Preserving Cremation Ashes For many centuries the Catholic Church only permitted burial of the body as the best way that showed respect for the loved one and expressed hope in the resurrection. Today, for economic and other reasons, many people are choosing cremation as the best option for their family. However, the Catholic Church has recently felt it needed to express AGAIN, the guidelines for preserving the cremated ashes and at the same time respect for a loved one. Cremated ashes may not be scattered, divided to be given to each family member, or kept at home. They may not be put in a locket or kept as a memento. Church authorities have stated that cremated ashes be kept in a consecrated place, like a community cemetery or a church cemetery. Many cemeteries have vaults for cremated ashes. This is approved. The backyard is not an approved place for burial. Since this is not a new teaching, but a reminder given to us by the Vatican, we as a faith community, without passing judgment on those who have not followed these guidelines in the past, we must do our best to adhere to our Church’s teaching. It is well founded. We become a child of God on the day of our baptism and are not the personal possession of our family. We belong to God. We have been purchased by the blood of Christ, and we belong to Him. He will raise our mortal bodies to be like His in glory (Romans 14:7-9). If you have any additional concerns or questions, please feel free to make an appointment with Fr. Tony at your earliest convenience. Regular Chapel Schedule Thanksgiving Week Adoration will end before the 8:30am Mass (Chapel) Thanksgiving Day Single/Single Again Social Ministry of St. Mary’s Who? Single/Single Again (includes: divorced, separated, single, and widowed) Age? Anyone 45 and older. When? Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, 3 pm. Where? Rosary Hall Purpose? The primary purpose of this group is to provide an opportunity for single Catholics to meet, worship and socialize together. The upcoming holidays are especially difficult for those who are single or single again. It is, therefore, during this time that St. Mary’s is reaching out to this segment of our parish. With Fr. Tony Castro’s approval, we are forming a Catholic Single/Single Again Social Ministry at St. Mary’s. There will be an informal voluntary gathering of individuals to discuss the kinds of things you are interested in doing socially. People need to guide their own destiny—so this is your opportunity to make this group what YOU would like for it to be.
