I
t was supposed to be a
celebration.
There were friends, ﬂan and champagne.
But by 10 p.m. on Election Night, the
mood shifted. Friends said goodbye. The
champagne was left unopened.
The election results left artist Andrea
Arroyo utterly devastated.
She and her husband Felipe Galindo are
both from Mexico. They were concerned
about family members, friends and now
also millions of suddenly very vulnerable
people.
“I was a mess,” she said. “I haven’t cried
so much since my brother died.”
Much of Arroyo’s art work is supremely
joyful. It’s full of bright colors, swirling
movement and portrayals of enigmatically
smiling goddesses. But other times her
work takes a darker turn. In exhibitions
called “The Disappeared” – dedicated to
the hundreds of missing women who’ve
turned up dead along the Mexican border
– her work reﬂects a sublime sense of grief.
Yet this time the sorrow was more
profound. When she went into her studio to
work, she felt paralyzed. “It was like 9/11,”
she said.
She composed one piece, of two hands
holding a dark sun. The black orb reﬂected
the moment, but she wanted to hold on to

the thought that people clasping hands are
stronger when united.
That gave her the idea to contact
other artists. Not long after sending out
a mass email, she received images of 30
works of art, with more coming in daily.
The results are being compiled on a website
and Facebook page called “Unnatural
Election: Artists Respond to the 2016
Presidential Election.”
People from everywhere from Northern
Manhattan to Bangladesh have contributed
work.
Arroyo hopes to secure a venue for the
ever expanding collection so people can
see the work in person. She’s talked to
several people who expressed interest in an
exhibition. “Hopefully I will have hundreds
of images,” she said.
Julia Best, who teaches yoga on the lawn
of the Morris-Jumel Mansion, provided an
image of a child screaming the Stars and
Stripes. Washington Heights resident Liz
Ritter provided an image of several uptown
residents holding hands.

own apartment.

track the number of pregnant and teenage
mothers in foster care, ACS has estimated that
there are 200 children living with their young

Americana de Diabetes, se estima
que 2 millones de personas en la ciudad
de Nueva York viven con diabetes. Esta
enfermedad crónica es la principal causa
de insuﬁciencia renal, ceguera de adultos
y amputación de extremidades inferiores,
además de un contribuyente principal de
las cardiopatías y apoplejías.

diabetes. This chronic disease
that is the leading cause of kidney
failure, adult blindness, and lower
extremity amputation, and a
prime contributor to heart disease
and stroke.
November marks National Diabetes
Awareness Month.
NYC Health + Hospitals cares for
thousands of adults and children who have
diabetes and those at risk for the disease.
Our health care providers focus on disease
prevention for those at risk and personalized
treatment for those diagnosed with the
disease--to help all our patients live their
healthiest life.
Special attention is given children and
young adults who are overweight and
therefore at increased risk for diabetes.
Adolescents ages 12-21 can receive
specialized health services at NYC Health
+ Hospitals YouthHealth neighborhood
centers in all ﬁve boroughs. The centers
provide a variety of services specially
developed for this age group, including
heathy weight management programs,
nutrition counseling, and support groups.
“Diabetes is a serious disease and those
who are diagnosed with the disease put
themselves at higher risk of other serious
health conditions, including heart and
kidney diseases and complications
of the eye,” said Dr. Gayotri
Goswami,

questions about diabetes prevention and
management:
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease in which there is
too much sugar in the blood. Blood sugar
– or glucose – is controlled by insulin,
a hormone made by the body. After
eating, food is broken down into glucose,
and insulin allows it to absorb into the
bloodstream, cells, and organs of the body.
Glucose acts as fuel for the body. If you
have diabetes, your body does not make
enough insulin, or it does not effectively
use the insulin it makes. Symptoms of
diabetes include excessive thirst, extreme
hunger, extreme fatigue, frequent urination,
unexplained weight loss, tingling, pain, or
numbness in hands and/or feet, blurred
vision, and sores, cuts, or bruises that are
slow to heal. Additionally, there are two

ven as a child, José Galindo
was interested in personal
ﬁnance.
The Colombia-born banking executive and
entrepreneur recalled learning origami as a
nine-year-old.
“I made like 100 paper stars and then sold
all of them to people that I knew, then opened
my ﬁrst bank account with the money,”
Galindo said.
“I remember my family not having the
same ﬁnancial resources as other families I
knew, so I tried to do something about that,”
he remarked.
In October, Galindo launched MoneyMio,
a bilingual website considered the ﬁrst to
provide Spanish- and English-speaking
Latinos in the United States with personal
ﬁnance resources.
At www.moneymio.com, users can
access culturally relevant content and free
comparison tools to locate credit cards and
personal loans with the best interest rates.
“The mission of MoneyMio is to provide

The site also features a calculator that

and blog postings with ﬁnancial planning tips.
Galindo called it surprising that a ﬁnancial
website tailored to Latinos did not exist
previously, something he attributed to
misguided notions on that demographic.
“I think that Latinos were looked at as
people who did not have their own ﬁnancial
resources,” said Galindo. “But that isn’t true
—Latinos in the U.S. are estimated to have
about $1.3 trillion in purchasing power.”
“If the Latino population currently in
the U.S. were to have their own standalone
country, it would be a really big country,” he
added. “But Latinos here, especially those
who are Spanish-dominant, continue to be an
underserved population.”

members joined New York City Public

Stringer on Tues., Nov. 15th to urge Governor
Andrew Cuomo to sign a bill that would provide
a funding stream to struggling public hospitals.
Led by members of the New York State
Nurses Association (NYSNA) and municipal
employee union DC 37, which represents
thousands of public hospital workers, the group
rallied at Harlem Hospital and called on Cuomo
to approve the bill, which was passed by both
houses of the state legislature.
The rally was
held uptown.
Known as the “Enhanced Safety-Net
Hospital” bill (A-9476/S6948), the legislation
would narrow the deﬁnition of a safetynet hospital and instruct the State Health
Commissioner to raise reimbursement rates for
hospitals that meet the new criteria.
Advocates said it would ensure that the
hospitals treating the most Medicaid patients
would get more funding, which would address
an unequal funding system that currently exists
for safety-net hospitals.
Judy Wessler, a community activist with
NYSNA, said that New York University
Langone Hospital gets 50 dollars more per
Medicaid reimbursement than Bellevue
Hospital, although Bellevue cares for more
Medicaid patients.
“This legislation begins to
address that inequality,” she said.
Rallygoers said that safety-net
hospitals provide essential medical
care for immigrant patients and
communities of color.
“For immigrants, there has never
been a greater need for safetynet hospitals,” said Dr. Matthews
Hurley of Harlem Hospital.
“These are the hospitals that take
care of the neediest New Yorkers,”

“This [presidential] election taught us
we need to ﬁnd common ground with rural
counties,” she said. “This bill is common
ground. This bill simply equalizes the ﬁeld. It
creates one system.”
“When we look at what’s happening with
our public hospitals, we should be concerned,”
stated Stringer. “The money drain is hurting the
poorest people.”
“My ofﬁce continues to warn that if we do
not structure our economic opportunities for
our public hospitals, then more people are
going to get sick and not have access to health
care,” Stringer added. “The ﬁrst step in the
process is to sign this legislation and create a
funding stream.”
The bill would deﬁne an “enhanced safety
net” hospital for public and voluntary hospitals
based on patient characteristics.

On the eve of the SOMOS 2016
conference in Puerto Rico, a task force from
Catholic Charities performed a day of service
at El Centro de Desarrollo para Padres y
Niños (The Development Center for Children
and Families in English).
Partnering with local organizations in
Puerto Rico, volunteers from New York
distributed non-perishable food and toys to
200 families at the center in Cantera, which is
located in the district of Santurce, Puerto Rico
on Wed., Nov. 9th.
Santurce is the largest and most populated
of all the districts within San Juan.

Neighbors” program staff, community
leaders and other volunteers, including
State Assemblymembers Marco Crespo and
Maritza Dávila, participated in the afternoon
event at Cantera.
Msgr. Kevin Sullivan, Executive Director
of the Archdiocese of New York Catholic
Charities, said the organization was pleased
to be part of the event. “Our belief is that
both charity and helping people is not
limited to merely one neighborhood, one
area.”
The group partnered with The New York
Foundling in Puerto Rico, which has several
Head Start programs throughout the island.
In 1973, The New York Foundling, a
Catholic Charities agency, ﬁrst extended its
services to Puerto Rico to help a signiﬁcant
number of families in New York returning
to the island. The New York Foundling
established and later expanded its Head Start
programs; they are currently located at 23
different sites in four different communities
serving almost 1,000 children and their
families each year.
Residents such as Donna Marie appreciate
the efforts. She lives in Cantera with her
three children, ages ﬁve, nine and 19. She
works part time and her oldest son attends
college. “When they help with food, we
really need it.”

Building to Burial

F
riendship, secrets and
forgiveness — these are some
of the themes explored in A Burial
Place, the latest offering from
playwright Owen Panettieri.
The intimate drama examines the
relationship of three childhood friends who
seek to reunite for summer fun in their
hometown following sophomore year at
college. Instead, they ﬁnd the town at the
core of a police investigation after a grisly
discovery is made in the woods, which one
of them may have a connection to through the
distant past.
“They’re trying to recapture that sense of
fun they had in their youth, but they come
home under the shadow of something darker,”
explained Panettieri.
The three men soon realize that seeking the
truth could pull them apart forever.
“The overriding theme of the show is
really about forgiveness and ﬁnding a way
to move forward when you don’t have all the
answers,” Panettieri said.
Presented by New Light Theater Project in
conjunction with 5000 Broadway Productions,
A Burial Place is being staged at the Dorothy
Strelsin Theatre until November 19.
The three-person show stars Max King,
Evan Maltby and Deshawn Wyatte,
and is directed by Joey
Brenneman.
It runs 95 minutes
without an intermission,
which Panettieri said allows
for tensions to build onstage.
“It’s a marathon of
different
emotions,”
remarked Panettieri, who
previously wrote Vestments
of the Gods and The
Timing of a Day, which
both garnered praise at the
New York Fringe Festival.
Panettieri also co-wrote a
webseries,, Legally Brown: The Search for the
Next Piragua Guy, with Lin-Manuel Miranda.
He said he enjoys the collaborative nature
of creating stage shows.
“Part of being a playwright is you really get
to create a world, and you’re all in it together,”
he remarked.

Bronx resident Wyatte, who plays the
role of Marcus, said he was immediately
energized by the quality of writing in the play.
“I was so excited to audition that I got the
date wrong, and I actually showed up a week
early,” he said with a laugh.
“I also like that I’m not playing a
stereotypical “black” character – I’m not a
thug or a ‘street guy’.”
Wyatte, who grew up in the Gun Hill
section of the Bronx and graduated from City
College, said the chemistry between the actors
is essential, as the small cast size means the
performers need to carry the entire show.
Brenneman has enjoyed a longstanding
collaboration with Panettieri, as she also
directed his ﬁrst two plays.
“I’m also a playwright, so I feel like we both
come from that same place,” said Brenneman.
“His work is very detailed, and unfolds very
naturally, but you realize that there are deeper
things going on.”
She said that the small dimensions of the
Dorothy Strelsin Theatre serve as an ideal
match for the intimacy of the drama and its
three-person cast.

Therapeutic Services, said the Bronx site is
designed to provide “a nurturing home” and
parenting support for teen mothers in foster
care.
“It’s meant to keep the family unit
intact in this supportive environment,”
explained Sampogna, who said that the
circumstances of caring for a child while
being under the city’s foster care system can
be daunting.
“Being a new mom is overwhelming, being
a teen is overwhelming, and being in foster care
is overwhelming,” remarked Sampogna. “Put
all of those together, and you have a really
challenging environment for these young
mothers.”
The Leake & Watts Mother & Child
Program can house up to 12 young women at
a time.
The site houses 11 teen mothers
and their young children.
Most of them are in their late teens, and will
stay at the site until they can be reunited with
their families, adopted, or are prepared to live
on their own, said Sampogna.
The house is staffed 24 hours a day by family
care advocates, who assist residents with
cooking, cleaning and skills of independent
living, as well as provide emotional support
and parenting help.
An onsite nursery enables the young
mothers to continue their education or work
during the day.
“They’re given every opportunity to get
support to make life work for them,” remarked
Sampogna.
The children receive medical care, early
intervention services if needed, and preschool
opportunities.
“Without this support, the children of these
teen mothers might become foster children,
too,” Sampogna said.
There are two social workers and a nurse
available onsite, and a therapist who meets
with residents weekly.

& Watts, said the new furniture will brighten
the lives of everyone in the program.
“We strive to make the physical space for
our programs as appealing and uplifting as
possible to create a positive and welcoming
environment,” he said in a statement. “We

living space for our teen moms and their
children. Private support is critical to our
ability to do so.”
Jassmaine said that the Mother & Child
program has had a positive impact on her.
“They are helping me better myself and

Manhattan Community College and said
she dreams of becoming a pediatric nurse or
therapist one day.
“I want to help kids that have been through
a lot of stuff such as myself,” she remarked. “I
think I can bring my own experiences to help
make things better for other kids who have
had similar struggles.”
She added, “Despite all my struggles, I’m
proud of the mom I am and all that I’m doing.”

of the state’s ﬁve public health systems or
federally designated as a critical access or sole
community hospital.
Anne Bové, a registered nurse and
NYSNA member, said that she has
witnessed immigrant or low-income New
Yorkers coming to public hospitals after
being bypassed for care at other corporate
facilities.
“With safety net hospitals, the money has
to follow the patients, and this legislation
will do that,” Bové said. “This legislation
helps us establish the foundation for access
to care. Both chambers in the legislature
have passed it, and it’s time for the Governor
to do the right thing: sign the bill!”
“I’m sick and tired of ﬁghting for health
care,” said DC 37 member and longtime
community activist Jackie Rowe-Adams.
“We need fair funding and we need to get the
word out about this.”
Cuomo has previously provided millions in
funding to some struggling hospitals through
a value-based quality improvement program,
and allocated $1.5 billion to healthcare
providers across the state to fund capital
and infrastructure improvements, as well as
integrate health systems into communities.
If Cuomo failed to sign the bill, state
lawmakers could still decide to provide
additional funding to certain hospitals
through next year’s budget.

There are several factors that can increase
your chances of getting the disease,
including weight gain, family history,
unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, and high
blood pressure or cholesterol. However,
maintaining a healthy weight, cutting back

salt, drinking plenty of water, reducing
alcohol consumption, quitting smoking,
exercising at least 30 minutes a day, and
getting an annual check-up are all things
that can be done to lessen your chances of

It’s important for people living with
diabetes to learn about the disease and
how it affects their daily life. Basic tips
for managing diabetes include talking
to and seeing a doctor regularly, taking
medications as prescribed by a doctor, eating
healthy, exercising regularly, managing your
weight, monitoring blood sugar by using
a blood glucose meter or “glucometer”
as directed by your doctor, keeping blood
pressure and cholesterol under control, and
getting your eyes, feet, and teeth examined

assistance. Josephina, 79, said the donation

to pregnant women until their children are
about ﬁve years old. “We have a very long
waiting list,” she added.

Government and Community Relations,
who, he said, “has effectively taken the
lead in developing these partnerships and
coordinating these projects.”
He added that the partnership between the
two organizations is natural because there
is such an afﬁnity between Puerto Rico and
New York.
Sullivan noted that entering into someone
else’s community made it imperative that
you learn more about that environment. “We
should all try to go out of our way to ﬁnd
opportunities to bring a helping hand to be of
service to our neighbors in need.”

Monseñor Kevin Sullivan, director ejecutivo de
Caridades Católicas de la Arquidiócesis de Nueva
York, dijo que la organización estaba encantada
de ser parte del evento. “Nuestra creencia es
que la caridad y la ayuda no se limita a un solo
vecindario o área”.
El grupo se asoció con The New York Foundling
en Puerto Rico, que tiene varios programas Head
Start en toda la isla.
En 1973, The New York Foundling, una agencia
de caridades católicas, amplió por primera vez sus
servicios a Puerto Rico para ayudar a un número
significativo de familias en Nueva York a regresar
a la isla. New York Foundling se estableció y luego
expandió sus programas Head Start; actualmente
están ubicados en 23 sitios diferentes de cuatro
comunidades que atienden a casi mil niños y sus
familias cada año.
Residentes como Donna Marie agradecen
los esfuerzos. Vive en Cantera con sus tres
hijos, de cinco, nueve y 19 años de edad. Ella
trabaja medio tiempo y su hijo mayor asiste a
la universidad. “Cuando ayudan con la comida,
realmente lo necesitamos”.
Los programas locales también ayudan con los
gastos médicos y la colegiatura. “Siempre están
tratando de ayudar a las familias a arreglárselas”,
dijo. “Son muy buenos”.
No son solo las familias las que reciben
asistencia. Josephina, de 79 años, dijo que la
donación de productos enlatados, harina y pasta
era muy bienvenida. “Me sentiría muy triste si no
tuvieran esto”, dijo.

Galindo, who moved to the United States
at age 16, said that Latino immigrants coming
to the country face language barriers and
lower education levels that can impact their
ﬁnancial decision-making capabilities.
After he graduated from college, Galindo
worked for a brokerage ﬁrm for eight years.
“That’s when I started realizing that kids
who came from wealthier families, they were
taught about ﬁnance when they were very
young,” said Galindo. “It became apparent to
me how much a difference that can make in
someone’s future.”
Galindo eventually learned to code and
transitioned to a technology career, where he
came up with his idea for MoneyMio.
“I noticed that there were very few online
ﬁnancial resources for Latinos,” he said.
“I wanted to leverage my experience with
my cultural background and make ﬁnancial
literacy more available.”
Since MoneyMio launched last month,
Galindo said that user trafﬁc is starting to
pick up, and that the website has drawn a few
thousand visitors so far.
The goal is to eventually have 11 million
annual visitors to the site, said Galindo,
whose company is attempting to partner with
community-based organizations to connect
with users from the immigrant community.
Galindo said that many Latinos don’t have
a credit history, which acts as a barrier to
accomplishing ﬁnancial goals.
“Many Latinos have a lack of trust of
banks,” he said. “We’re hoping we could help
build that trust.”

“The overriding theme of the
show is forgiveness,” explained
playwright Owen Panettieri.
“The theater has the audience on three
sides of the performers, and we have
completely different points of view for
the characters,” said Brenneman. “The
audience can be taking sides.”
“This is a very intimate piece, and you’re
working with very deep scenes,” she added.
She said that, at its core, the show is a
celebration of the complicated nature of
friendships.
“Tragedy is something that brings us
together,” said Brenneman. “As painful
as grieving is, moving on can be just as
painful.”

The group formed last year to prevent a
$485 million dollar cut in state funding at the
City University of New York (CUNY) is now
kicking off a city-wide campaign to demand $2
billion from the state and city.
The new funding would be used to ﬁnance
a “Student Bill of Rights” to a free and quality
public higher education. The bill calls for free
tuition and aid for other college costs, more
full-time professors and advisers for students,
upgrades to CUNY’s aging infrastructure, and
scaling up programs that aid students’ retention
and completion.

Every New Yorker should have access to a free, high-quality public higher education, the surest
path to economic
opportunity, financial security, and intellectual and personal growth. For a half-million students
a year, that path starts
at CUNY—The City University of New York.
CUNY students, mostly people of color from low-income families, reside in every borough of
the city and come from
every corner of the world. They attend CUNY seeking a high-quality, affordable education after
graduating from high
school or after years of working. CUNY is often the only option for undocumented students.
CUNY graduates add
significantly to the city’s workforce, its culture and civic life, and the economy as business leaders,
scientists, teachers,
nurses, elected officials, writers, artists and more.
Yet, for all its accomplishments, CUNY, a once free opportunity, is falling far short of its potential
because of years of
public disinvestment. The decline in public funding per student and increases in tuition are compounded
by the rising
costs of transportation, food, housing and child care in New York City. Many students are
struggling, and these
challenges contribute to particularly lower completion rates for low- and middle-income people
of color.
CUNY’s full-time faculty and staff are overstrained and underpaid, and more than half of CUNY
courses are taught by
low-wage adjunct faculty hired on a per-course basis. The quality of a CUNY education is threatened
because of greater
difficulty in retaining full-time faculty and diminished access to instructors in and out of the classroom.
This affects the
quality of mentorship, retention and success of students. Campus buildings often lack public
spaces for students to
gather, and too many buildings are deteriorating.
Albany and City Hall must invest in CUNY. Students have a fundamental right to:

Public universities should be free for all New Yorkers, through lower costs and increased need-based
aid.
Aid for books, class materials, transportation, food, child care, housing and other costs of attendance
should be available to those who need it.
High-Quality Instruction



Students should receive instruction from expert faculty who are reflective of the cultural composition
of
the student body.
Faculty must be fairly compensated and have workloads and class sizes that enable individualized
student
support.
Full-time faculty need to teach a majority of courses, and adjuncts should have secure positions
and pay
parity with their full-time colleagues.
Support to Aid Retention and Completion


Academic advisers and mental health counselors should have manageable caseloads and sufficient
resources.
Opportunity programs that provide tutoring, guidance and other holistic supports must expand
to meet the
needs of all who require them.
Safe and Modern Learning Environments in Good Repair




Critical maintenance projects should be completed quickly to protect everyone’s health and safety.
Maintenance staffing levels should be increased so minor repairs can be made efficiently.
Facilities should be equipped with state-of-the-art technology that is updated regularly.
New construction should expand classroom space and course offerings to prevent overcrowding
and
provide communal spaces for academic, cultural and social activities.
