November begins this week with two special days for
Catholics. Tuesday, November 1, 2016 is the Solemnity of All
Saints, a Holy Day of Obligation. Wednesday, November 2, 2016
is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls’
Day).
All Saints, as a Holy Day of Obligation, requires us to
participate at Mass and to conduct ourselves throughout the day
as much as possible like a Sunday. For many, this Tuesday is a
typical workday and therefore brings a challenge to observe the
Holy Day as the Church intends. Yet, it is possible in most cases
with some effort to rearrange schedules and to be mindful of all
the saints, especially our patron saints, and their example and
prayers for us as we strive to live in our own circumstances the
Christian life.

Confessions in the Basilica at 11:30 AM
All Souls’ Day, the Commemoration of All the Faithful
Departed, reminds of the spiritual work of mercy to pray for the
dead. As we remember the dead, on November 2, with confidence
in the saving power of the Mass for the deceased, assisting them
from the purification of Purgatory to the glory of heaven, so we as
well with special devotion all through the month of November.
The All Souls Envelopes, listing the dead to be especially remembered this month at Mass, will be placed at the All Souls Altar in
the Basilica. Mass will be offered once a week at this altar for all
the faithful departed.

“The Rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see
and there enact the greatest drama of love the world
has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which
initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book
of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this
world, and open on the substance of the next. The
power of the Rosary is beyond description.”

Si nunca has experimentado guerra, prisión,
Me desperté

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW
Wake-up Call
I dreamt that I visited heaven and an angel was showing
me around. In a large workroom, filled with angels, my
guide said, “This is the Receiving section for all prayers and
petitions to God.” The angels were busily sorting messages
from people all over the world. We moved on. The angel
said, “This is Shipping, where graces and blessings are processed, packaged, and sent.” Again, it was a very busy
place. Finally, we stopped at the door of a small room. Only
one angel was sitting there, not doing much. “This is the
Acknowledgment section,” my guide said. “Why is no work
going on here?” I asked. The angel sighed. “Sadly, after
people receive their blessings, very few send any acknowledgments. And think about this. If you have food in a refrigerator, clothes to wear, a roof overhead, and a place to sleep
you are richer than 75 percent of the world. If you have
money in the bank and in your wallet, and spare change in a
dish, you are among the top 8 percent of the world’s
wealthy. If you contact people on a computer you are
among 1 percent in the world with that opportunity. If you
woke up healthy this morning, think of all those suffering
the pains of sickness or who will not survive this day. If you
have never experienced fear in battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation
you are unlike seven hundred million people in the world. If
you can express your beliefs without harassment, arrest,
torture, or death you are freer than three billion people in
the world.” I woke up with a start and said, “Thank you,
Lord. I promise to share all my blessings today.”
