The past twelve months were challenging to the global fiber industry. Macroeconomic disruptions and global volatility characterize international business activities just as much as our own sector. In spite of all the differences among the different market participants, one megatrend is undisputed: even in the light of volatile global economic conditions, the fiber industry remains a dynamic growth industry. In absolute terms, annual growth rates of between three and four percent comprise significant volume increases. The global fiber market currently amounts to about 80 million tons, and the 100 million ton threshold should be reached in a few years. Another major trend is the vitally important role that China is playing in global events. In past years China was already the dominant player in terms of volumes. In the meantime, the entire world market orients itself to the prices for standard fiber qualities in China. And, as we clearly mentioned during the last Dornbirn Man-made Fibers Congress, the trend towards specialization and thus also innovation is the recipe for success and survival for all market participants. An increasing number of fiber producers are pursuing the path of offering special fiber qualities for special applications. This path of differentiation generates advantages for all those involved. The user gets a product customized in many ways and one which can be processed better. In return, the fiber manufacturer gets a premium for its hardware and ”software” i.e. the service linked to the fiber. Only through innovation and specialization can new markets be opened up, enabling economic uncertainties to be offset or cushioned. At the anniversary event of the Dornbirn Man-made Fibers Congress in the previous year, the foundation was laid for the next 50 years. Accordingly, the focus of this year’s 51st Dornbirn Man-made Fibers Congress will be on the future viability of the industry based on sustainability and innovation as well as communication with upcoming generations. A major emphasis this year will be on the topic of ”Fibers and Textiles in Automotive”. We can look forward with a great deal of interest to the speeches given within the framework of the topic ”Unconventional Fiber Applications”. ”Man-made Fibers for Environmental Protection”, ”Medical Applications”, ”Fiber Innovations”, ”EU-Research Projects” and ”Technical Nonwovens” are other focal points. The choice of issues shows that the event organizers have successfully striven this year to develop the conference into a central communication platform where important future topic impacting our industry will be discussed. The speakers and guests from academic circles, industry and along the processing chain can take advantage of the event to share valuable ideas and knowledge and get helpful suggestions. The forward-looking approach is also underlined by a new visual design of the Dornbirn Man-made Fibers Congress, for which I would like to sincerely congratulate the organizers. I wish all participants, speakers and event organizers a successful event, and many new and future-oriented ideas and insights!
