Trusting in and relying upon God gives us strength to persevere during trials, and live as
more faithful disciples of Jesus. Many people in our world think they are self-sufficient
and do not need God. As believers in Jesus, however, we are called to trust and rely
upon Him. We know God is our strength and salvation, and the more we rely on Him, the
more we will receive the strength we need to face life’s challenges.

A media agreement can help the family relief
tensions
Parenting isn’t easy and it may sometimes feel
overwhelming. Throw in the internet, social
networks, computers and mobile devices – and
things can often seem impossible. A family media
agreement can help your family navigate the digital
world. The media agreement may help establish:
guidelines and expectations for media use,
appropriate behavior online and a checklist to help
discuss various topics. For a template family media
agreement visit www.faithandsafety.org or email
[email protected] or call
213-637-7227.
To promptly notify the Rectory of any changes in your registration information. Such
changes could include changes in names, address, phone number, e-mail address,
marital status, etc., or, if you no longer attend Holy Family Church. Please also let us
know if you do not want to use envelopes. If you want to have a record of your
contributions, however, it is important that you either use envelopes or write your
family ID number on your checks. Your continued cooperation is greatly appreciated
so that we can ensure the accuracy of our records.

Our Lady of Fatima School's entire curriculum and philosophy of
education is grounded in the Gospel Values and teachings of the
Catholic Church. Within the traditions of the Church we identify
women and men who have served as role models and examples of
the Holy Spirit working and inspiring each of us to become
instruments of God's Divine Plan. Each month we invoke the name of
saints to inspire and transform our lives to lead lives of holiness. At
each morning assembly in the month of October Ms. Jada Ramos will
invoke the names of St. Francis and St. Therese to pray for us as
followers of Christ. Please join the OLF Community in calling upon the saints in heaven to
transform our lives to be instruments of change in our world today.

DEPENDING ON GOD
“Getting by with a little help from our friends”
is not an idea that began with the Beatles. Certainly
the idea of “getting by with a little help from God”
goes back at least to the first reading today from
Exodus. How we get that help, however, is the key
to this weekend’s scriptures.
No matter how inadequate Moses felt to the
task God had given him, he persevered—even
though he needed help from the people around him.
The Israelites especially depended on God for
freedom. The woman in the Gospel, desperate and
destitute, had no one to depend on, but still she
would not give up. She could not afford to bribe the
unscrupulous judge, but she pestered him into
weariness until finally he met her demands.
We sometimes need to turn to others to help
us through difficult times; but if we always turn to
God, we won’t be disappointed, for our help, the
psalm assures us, is from the Lord.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
From the early medieval period, it was
expected that the many bishops of Italy travel to
Rome at least once every three years to give a
report of their ministry, with a footnote granting the
bishops of Sicily a visit every five years. By the
eleventh century, the idea of bishops visiting the
tombs of the apostles was a very strict requirement
for all within reasonable reach of Rome. The age of
discovery and the expansion of the Church into
remote corners of the earth made this an
unreasonable burden in many cases, yet every
bishop was required at least to send a
representative to Rome every five years.
In 1911, Pope St. Pius X established the rule
for a “quinquennial” (meaning “once in five years”)
report, called an ad limina. This literally means “to
the threshhold,” and refers to the expectation that
the visiting bishop will go to the thresholds of the
tombs of the apostles Peter and Paul and to a
personal audience with the Holy Father. An
exemption was given to so-called “mission
territories,” which in 1911 included the United
States. The reports were still required, but could be
filed by letter with an office of the missions called
“Propagation of the Faith.” This status was changed
in 1917 and since that time all American bishops
have been subject to the ad limina. These reports,
carefully kept in the Vatican archives, are a treasure
trove for historians, providing snapshots of culture
and faith and a record of the Church’s resilience
even in times of persecution and change.

World Youth Day
Pilgrimage Reflection
by: William Gordo Jr.
As a college student away from my home parish, I entered a life of sin that brought myself down to the
lowest feeling I had ever felt. It’d been two months after I returned and had since began to rebuild my faith
but was still feeling so unworthy and undeserving of this entire trip. The parish, my family and my friends all
gave me immeasurable support over the past two years and I was so petrified at the idea of letting them
down. After a session of reconciliation with Father Joshua, I was able to tighten my head on just slightly in
preparation for this pilgrimage, but still the lingering feeling of doubt was crushing my soul. The power of
God, however, is so powerful that my feelings of fear and shame were obliterated in less than a single hour.
The second day of the pilgrimage we went to the first underground church of Rome which connected
to a series of graves. Father Joachim explained to us that it was previously the tomb of saints. After their
burial some 200,000 Catholics sought to be buried as close to these two saints as possible. This opened my
eyes to the understanding that my faith needed to be as devoted as those people. These saints were not
Jesus. They did not do the things Jesus did. Their work and significance to building the church though was
so strong that people were buried shoulder to shoulder for miles just to be close. I needed to act in such a
way that when the people of the church saw me, they would see a living example of Jesus’ works and ways.
Though I am still in the progress of getting there, it set the tone for the rest of the pilgrimage for me. I found
myself in awe of the evidence of God so many times.
One moment, I found myself unable to hold my tears back. In St. Peter’s basilica in the Vatican I was
taking pictures of the beautiful architecture before me but I could not continue. The camera hung loose
around my neck as I took in the rich history of the church. The hands that built not only the basilica, but our
Catholic faith astounded me. It was inspiring to realize how far the church had come on faith alone. The
entire length we were there I could not keep back my emotions. If this was how I viewed the church, as
many pilgrims also saw it the same way, it allowed me to ask myself a question. What will people of the
future see when they look back at us? Will they be in awe of the things we did, or will it just be a period of
average? I do not want to be average. I do not want Holy Family in Artesia to just disappear. The Holy
Father prayed for us at the opening ceremony of World Youth Day. “Launch us into the adventure of tearing
down walls.”
As the youth of the church, we have ensure that we build and expand our catholic virtues. We need
to make it known to the world that we are here and that God is not gone. Every individual enters a moment
where they are a second away from being in love with God, or being just a viewer on the sideline. We need
to know when to reach out and let ourselves take in his love so as to let it be our breath. This pilgrimage
showed me that and I cannot thank the parish enough for this.

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

12
Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
This is is a continuation of the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Reflection
on Catholic Teaching and Political Life.
Why Does the Church Teach About Issues
Affecting Public Policy?
10. What faith teaches about the dignity of the
human person, about the sacredness of every
human life, and about humanity's strengths and weaknesses
helps us see more clearly the same truths that also come to us
through the gift of human reason. At the center of these truths is
respect for the dignity of every person. This is the core of
Catholic moral and social teaching. Because we are people of
both faith and reason, it is appropriate and necessary for us to
bring this essential truth about human life and dignity to the
public square. We are called to practice Christ's commandment
to "love one another" (Jn 13:34). We are also called to promote
the well-being of all, to share our blessings with those most in
need, to defend marriage, and to protect the lives and dignity of
all, especially the weak, the vulnerable, the voiceless. In his first
encyclical letter, Deus Caritas Est, Pope Benedict XVI explained
that "charity must animate the entire lives of the lay faithful and
therefore also their political activity, lived as 'social charity'" (no.
29). 11. Some question whether it is appropriate for the Church
to play a role in political life. However, the obligation to teach
the moral truths that should shape our lives, including our public
lives, is central to the mission given to the Church by Jesus
Christ. Moreover, the United States Constitution protects the
right of individual believers and religious bodies to participate
and speak out without government interference, favoritism, or
discrimination. Civil law should fully recognize and protect the
right of the Church and other institutions in civil society to
participate in cultural, political, and economic life without being
forced to abandon or ignore their central moral convictions. Our
nation's tradition of pluralism is enhanced, not threatened, when
religious groups and people of faith bring their convictions and
concerns into public life. Indeed, our Church's teaching is in
accord with the foundational values that have shaped our
nation's history: "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
12. The Catholic community brings important assets to the
political dialogue about our nation's future. We bring a
consistent moral framework-drawn from basic human reason
that is illuminated by Scripture and the teaching of the Churchfor assessing issues, political platforms, and campaigns. We
also bring broad experience in serving those in need-educating
the young, serving families in crisis, caring for the sick,
sheltering the homeless, helping women who face difficult
pregnancies, feeding the hungry, welcoming immigrants and
refugees, reaching out in global solidarity, and pursuing peace.
We celebrate, with all our neighbors, the historically robust
commitment to religious freedom in this country that has
allowed the Church the freedom to serve the common good.
