Feliz Día de Acción de Gracia! DID YOU KNOW…? Did you know that this year the Church is focusing our attention on Consecrated Life? Last year it was focused upon Living our Faith, and the year before was the Year of Faith. In this year of Consecrated Life we explore the role of men and women religious in the life of the Church, and we reflect upon those who may be called to Religious Life in our families and in our parish community. We are all called to religious life, to a life of holiness, but some of the baptized enter into Religious Orders and Communities and make vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The vows are public, and a representative of the Church along with a representative of the Order or Community receives the vows. The Orders tend to be more monastic, more cloistered, while the Communities tend to be more apostolic, hands on in ministry. Active religious have lived a life that walks between monastic tradition with its scheduled hours for prayer, work, and community, and a life of active ministry in schools, hospitals, parishes, social service agencies, refugee centers, prisons, etc… Some of the best know Orders include the Benedictines, Dominicans, Augustinians, Ursulines, Carmelites, Poor Clares, and the Franciscans. Religious Communities that are not Orders tend to have a shorter history, many springing up in the 18th and 19th centuries like the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Sisters of the Divine Providence, the Sisters of Charity and the MSBT (20th century). The communities were founded by priests and women interested in meeting a need in the Church, care of orphans, teaching of catechism, Catholic schools and hospitals, etc… The active communities are very ministry oriented because they were founded to serve in ministry, yet the mutual holiness of the members was always first. Visit this corner during the year to learn more about religious life, vows, and new forms of communal life in the Church. (Cont.) The Feast of Christ the King was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote to secularism, a way of life which leaves God out of man's thinking and living and organizes his life as if God did not exist. Bill needs some volunteers to help him to plan and execute the decoration of the church for Advent and Christmas. Please speak to him directly. This image of the last judgment is unsettling, if only because we see ourselves being judged for our actions based on our vision of what was right. We know that at different times we belong in both categories, sheep and goats! We can remember doing good things for others in the name of Christ, but we also know there have been times when we turned away from others, for a variety of reasons. If we had seen Christ in those people, would we have acted differently? Our Shepherd-King gives us another chance. We can see ourselves as the sheep who have strayed. Christ seeks us out, brings us home, and helps us to find our direction again. He refreshes our memory of what is important, of what we need to attend to and what we need to do. We learn once again how to recognize the voice of our Shepherd and King. We are invited to open our hearts to our neighbors, because in so doing, we open our hearts to Christ.
