It’s the month of the Holy Rosary; it’s also the month of mission. Both themes are intertwined. But let me delve into the Holy Rosary, a Christian prayer that is so beautiful and so meditative but also a prayer that is so misunderstood and sometimes badly practiced. It is a prayer that is attacked by many non-Catholics as it is often interpreted by them as “multiplying prayers as pagans do” (Mt. 6:7). It is disliked by some Catholics who find this prayer so repetitive, too much Marian-centered and not enough Christ-centered. And many buy the rosary beads and use them as a decoration around their necks or cars but not lead them into prayer – beads as an adornment that lose their character as a prayer symbol. Considering these misunderstandings and malpractices leads us to make some reflections about the rosary and its original meaning. Background Information: The first part (Hail Mary” up to “Blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus) of the Holy Rosary is taken from Holy Scriptures; the second part (“Holy Mary” up to the end) is a petition prayer. The first part is a combination of two greetings to the Blessed Mother: the greeting of the angel Gabriel at the Annunciation and the greeting of Elizabeth when Mary visited her. To the greeting of the angel, Gabriel (Lk 1:28), the name of Mary was inserted (Hail, Mary, full of grace) and to the greeting of Elizabeth (Lk 1:42), the name of Jesus was inserted (Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus). The joining together of the greetings of Mary by Gabriel and Elizabeth in prayer form goes back to the 6th or 7th century. About the year 1200, this first part of the Hail Mary was so popular that the bishop of Paris, Eudes de Sully (died 1208), demanded that everybody should know this prayer by heart as also the Our Father, thus, becoming one of the basic prayers. The second part, “Holy Mary”, is from a later date as we can see from the different style. It is no longer biblical as it is more petition in form. It probably originated towards the end of the 15th century so that in 1568, the present form – greeting and petition – was prescribed as a preparation of the Divine Office (at that time called the ‘Breviary’), and by this, it became official and its use, universal. Various Names of the Rosary Psalter: This name is older than the word, Rosary. The Dominican friar, Salanus de Rupe, propagated this name as the one hundred fifty Hail Mary’s became a substitute to the one hundred fifty Psalms in the Bible since the Bible then, written in Hebrew and Greek, was not available to all. Rosary: This comes from the word “Rosa” or “Rosarium, a garden of roses or a bouquet of roses offered to Mary. It was propagated by the Carthusian monk, Adolf of Essen. Teach your children how to handle bullies Many schools have started initiatives focused on eliminating bullying, and teaching kids how to be kind to each other and learn together. At home, you can show your children how to defend themselves, friends or classmates with firm, polite statements, if others are teasing them. Talk with your kids about bullying – what’s happening, who’s doing it, and how to stop it. Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading – Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-14 Second Reading – 2 Timothy 1:6-8,13-14 Gospel Reading – Luke 17:5-10 “Lord, increase our faith,” words of request to Jesus by the apostles. Jesus replies: “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you,” says the Lord. What does Jesus mean? Mustard seeds are so small against a mulberry tree. Little mustard seeds, things done in faith can uproot deeply rooted trees of unbelief and mountains of hatred, division and discord. Little acts of prayers, short reminders to admonish against wrongdoings, small conversations among peers and groups of individuals – these little mustard seeds can move into the sea mountains of hatred for the poor and defenseless; or a deeply rooted disdain for pain and suffering when we become sick and old. St. Paul tells us in the second reading from his letter to Timothy: “Do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord . . . but bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. During the time of the prophet, Habakkuk, the situation of plunder, oppression and injustice was getting impossible. The Lord tells the people through the prophet, not to give up because of the difficulties that shake their faith. Our faith, as a commitment to follow Jesus, can succeed in pulling out these evil roots, though tough and resistant like those of a mulberry tree. This journey of faith is not always easy; it could even be interrupted. Some may get tired believing and stop awhile; some may continue to believe in God but may not yet trust Him fully as they may not have the courage to take certain steps to cross certain bridges. But faith is not something that gives us the right to demand rewards from God. It is because Faith is not a reward but something that helps us understand life and foster our happiness. This is made more clear in the story about a servant, who, after a long day’s work under the heat of the sun, comes home exhausted. The master, instead of telling his servant to get some rest, orders him to serve him first and only after he finishes can his servant help himself. What a rude master. This means that in front of God, we should not presume that if we serve Him as a good parent or as a good husband or wife or as a good priest, that we are entitled to some form of merit or reward. Of course, God is more generous than we can imagine. We serve God for the sake of serving God as we are just servants of His. Even after a hard day’s work that may leave us tired and exhausted, one must repeat the servant’s words in the gospel: “I am just a useless servant; I only did what I had to do.” October 2, 2016 Our Lady of Lourdes Church Page Six Page Seven Our Lady of Lourdes Church Ministerios Hispanos Acolitos & Ujieres Rosa Cisneros 818-951-3527 Clases PreBautismales Cecilia Rico 818-359-9610 Comunidad Hispana Irma Velasquez 323-447-2290 Coro Hispano Rosalia Maldonado 818-642-9600 Cursillos Blanca Nava 818-858-7991 Eucaristia Alicia Villaseñor 818-433-9635 Grupo de Oración Yolanda Oliva 818-793-9683 Lectores Andrea Mata 818*601-2805 RICA Blanca Nava 818-858-7991 Este Domingo, Comunidad de Lord’s Flock patrocinara el Domingo de Donuts después de todas las misas de la mañana.
