Range description 1,2
This species is endemic to Mexico, where it is widespread in the central states. It occurs in
Aguascalientes, Mxico Federal District, Durango, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Mxico State, Michoacn,
Nuevo Len, Oaxaca, Puebla, Quertaro, San Luis Potos, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and is reported from the
literature from Zacatecas (Hernndez et al. 2004). Galindo-Becerril and Fernndez-Nava (2002) report it for
the state of Morelos in the municipality of Amacuzac. It grows at elevations of 1,000 to 2,000 m asl. It is
known from 267 localities and has an area of occupancy of 51,000 km2 ( H. Hernndez, C. GmezHinostrosa, and M. Chzaro pers. comm. 2009).

The species occurs in tropical deciduous forest, xerophyllous scrub and less frequently in grassland
(Arias et al. 1997). It flowers between February and April and the flowers last for one day only.

Myrtillocactus geometrizans is listed as Least Concern due to its wide distribution, because it is locally
abundant, and because it is not declining at nearly the rate sufficient to qualify for listing in a
threatened category.

This species is widespread and locally common.

There are no major threats to this species. Some habitats are disturbed by goats. The species has many
different uses in the Tehuacn-Cuicatln Valley, however the impact of harvest is low (Prez-Negrna and
Casas 2007).
Conservation actions 1,2

This cactus occurs within the National Park Cerro de la Campanas in Quertaro and the TehuacnCuicatln Biosphere Reserve (Mndez-Larios et al. 2006).
A rural nursery where the species is propagated exists in the municipality of Mixquiahuala, Hidalgo,
Mexico, along with environmental education workshops on the conservation of the regional flora (Reyes
et al. 2003).
