St. Dominic Catholic Church Houston, TX OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST KING OF THE UNIVERSE November 23, 2014 Dear Friends in St. Dominic, Queridos Amigos en St. Dominic, The Solemnity of Christ the King, which every Catholic throughout the entire world is celebrating at the last Sunday in ordinary time, is a new thing. The Church has existed for almost 2000 years, but this Solemnity is less than 100 years old. It was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925. He explained his reasons for doing so in an encyclical letter called "Quas primas". First he explained that throughout history liturgical feasts have been instituted in response to particular needs that arise in the life of the world and the Church. He gives the example of the feasts in honor of the martyrs, of the celebration of Corpus Christi and the Sacred Heart. And then he explains which need this new celebration addresses. He was writing this encyclical in 1925, when the world was still trying to recover from World War I, which had devastated Europe and shattered modernity's hopes for unlimited progress based solely on human reason. 1925 was also only a few years after the Russian Bolshevik Revolution, which had given birth to the world's first explicitly atheist totalitarian regime: Soviet communism. Everywhere the pope looked, he saw human societies abandoning Christian values and trying to build paradise on earth through other means. But if humanity had been able to perfect itself by itself, without God's help, then Jesus Christ would never have come to earth. The fact is, Jesus did come. He brought his Gospel and his grace to a fallen race, and only by believing in that Gospel and accepting that grace can individuals and societies achieve true and lasting peace and prosperity. Pope Pius XI instituted the Solemnity of Christ the King as a way to remind the world that to reject Christ, either in private life or in public life, is to reject our only hope, and to accept him is to accept salvation. As Pope Pius IX wrote: ...When once men recognize, both in private and in public life, that Christ is King, society will at last receive the great blessings of real liberty, well-ordered discipline, peace and harmony... That these blessings may be abundant and lasting in Christian society, it is necessary that the kingship of our Savior should be as widely as possible recognized and understood, and to that end nothing would serve better than the institution of a special feast in honor of the Kingship of Christ. We are generous when we have the time or the money. But, generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving of one’s time, money, compassion, forgiveness, mercy when it’s not convenient; when it’s not on our schedule, but on the other person’s schedule. THANKSGIVING One act of thanksgiving, when things go wrong with us, is worth a thousand thanks when things are agreeable to our inclinations. L S THE LORD’S FLOCK heep are high-maintenance animals. They are not very intelligent. Without guidance and care, especially in a climate like Israel’s, they would die quickly from predators, starvation, or just their own slowness. The scriptural image of us as the Lord’s flock is not terribly flattering to us, since it is only the never-ending diligence of a watchful shepherd that allows the flock to survive. The feast of Christ the King was intended to call the world back to Christ as the sole power of the world, to bring back a flock that had been scattered by many negative forces of the growing industrial, scientific, and war torn world of the early twentieth century. It is fitting that, as we celebrate Christ the King, we hear about Christ the Shepherd who cares for us and who, likewise, will be there at the end of time. Interestingly enough, as the Gospel illustrates, our own destiny is determined by the way we have been “shepherds” to the rest of the flock. C TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION oming to the end of the Church year, we can wonder how we got “extreme uncƟon” out of “anoinƟng of the sick.” “Extreme” comes from a LaƟn phrase, in extremis, which in English refers to the last struggle of a dying person. “Last rites” is a phrase in common usage, and refers to the fact that years ago everyone waited unƟl the last crisis of illness to summon the priest. The goal of anoinƟng had always been healing and forgiveness, but in Ɵme it began to be seen as a preparaƟon for death. In a hard world, almost anything from a hangnail to a sneeze could be life-threatening, so perhaps the change was inevitable. The emphasis on the penitenƟal aspects was heightened, even to the odd pracƟce of Rome in the twelŌh century, when the sick person was sprinkled with ashes mixed with holy water and given a hair shirt as a sign of penance. The reformers thankfully overlooked some of these oddiƟes of history, and today the sacrament of the sick is much more generously applied to persons in a wide range of situaƟons. SƟll, it is a sacrament of reconciliaƟon, and for that reason is not celebrated for an infant or toddler, although there is a rite for a visit to a sick child not including anoinƟng or Communion. PETE DEVER, 11011 CROSBY-LYNCHBURG RD.
