Men: Pay Attention to Your Health Fifth grade students from North Grammar Elementary attended the 3rd Annual Leadership Conference sponsored by South Texas College. The conference included students from each of the adopted elementary schools from across the valley. North Grammar Elementary students were able to meet, work, and dialogue on various topics ranging from saving for college to dealing with deadlines. Every student who attended the conference received a backpack full of school supplies, was treated to a delicious breakfast and lunch, and had the opportunity to win amazing gift baskets. North Grammar Elementary would like to THANK South Texas College for emphasizing the importance of a college education and helping make college a reality for so many. Correctly or not, most men are known for not staying on top of their health: A few beers here, brisket or burger there… or putting off that doctor checkup. The physicians of the Texas Medical Association (TMA) want to remind men to make their health a priority — for themselves and their families. After all, doctors say, keeping healthy has its rewards: avoiding chronic disease and allowing more quality time with friends and family. “Some simple things can mean huge improvements in our health,” said Lenore DePagter, DO, a San Marcos internist. “We physicians prefer to help our patients improve their health, rather than having to treat them when illness or disease strikes.” Men’s Health Week (June 13- 19) aims to raise awareness of preventable health problems and encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury. A simple path to good health includes eating right, staying active, quitting smoking, and staying up to date on vaccinations, say Texas physicians in TMA’s Healthy Vision 2020. Obesity - There’s work to be done: Nearly one-third (31.9 percent) of Texas adults are obese, making it the 11th most obese state in the nation, according to The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America. And obesity rates are highest in adults aged 40-59 years, according to the National Health Interview Survey. Obesity and being overweight can contribute to a host of health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Adults are urged to get 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly, plus some musclestrengthening activities. If someone hasn’t been active, walking is a great way to start improving health, said Dr. DePagter. Then he or she can work up to longer, and possibly more intense, activity. But she added it’s wise to talk with the doctor before beginning any physical activity. Tobacco - Quitting tobacco also can have an immediate positive impact on a person’s health. No matter the person’s age and what form of tobacco used — cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, or e-cigarettes — quitting has benefits. Texas has a MEN’S HEALTH, page 9 COME HOME! The workshops will be hosted August 11, 2016, from 10 am to 12 pm at the Rio Grande City Public Library, located at 591 E. Canales St., in Rio Grande City. Let’s Put Our Cities on the Map is part of Google’s Get Your Business Online program and aims to bring community members, business owners, and civic leaders together to help small businesses succeed on the web. “When we look for products or services, we tend to go online to find further information. If you have a business but potential customers cannot find you online, you may be losing sales opportunities. This workshop will help businesses get found online and to capture some of that interest,” shares SBDC Senior Business & Innovation Advisor Aaron Gonzalez. “4 out of 5 consumers use search engines to find local information nearby, yet only 37 percent of businesses have claimed their listing on a search engine,” says Soo Young Kim, Head of Small Business Engagement at Google. “Small businesses are the engine of local economies and when they flourish, their communities do as well.” Let’s Put Our Cities on the Map is a program designed to empower communities to support their local businesses and encourage them to get on the map. Local businesses keep our communities strong; when we help them succeed on the web, they make our communities even stronger. The Let’s Get Your Cities on the Map workshop is a Google® presentation hosted by UTRGV SBDC in partnership with the RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, The Rio Grande City EDC, The Rio Grande City Public Library and the Starr County Industrial Foundation. The total number of acres of floodplains is 0.27 these are located within the project area. The City of Rio Grande City has considered the following alternatives and mitigation measures to be taken to minimize adverse impacts and to restore and preserve natural and beneficial values: The City of Rio Grande City has considered the following alternatives and mitigation measures to be taken to minimize adverse impacts and to restore and preserve natural and beneficial values, and taking into account compliance with state and local floodplain protection procedures: 1. Locate the proposed activities within the floodplain; considered necessary from a public interest standpoint since no suitable alternative exists. 2. Locate the proposed activities outside the floodplain; no mitigation required; not feasible considering the necessity to utilize existing property. 3. Methods to serve the same or similar objectives including street paving to assist low and very low income beneficiaries from targeted subdivisions. The City of Rio Grande City is in compliance with FEMA Map dated April 19, 2010 Map Number 48427C0685C. City of Rio Grande City has reevaluated the alternatives to building in the floodplain and has determined that it has no practicable alternative. Environmental files that document compliance with steps 3 through 6 of Executive Order 11988 , are available for public inspection, review and copying upon request at the times and location delineated in the last paragraph of this notice for receipt of comments. There are three primary purposes for this notice. First, people who may be affected by activities in floodplains and those who have an interest in the protection of the natural environment should be given an opportunity to express their concerns and provide information about these areas. Second, an adequate public notice program can be an important public educational tool. The dissemination of information and request for public comment about floodplains can facilitate and enhance Federal efforts to reduce the risks and impacts associated with the occupancy and modification of these special areas. Third, as a matter of fairness, when the Federal government determines it will participate in actions taking place in floodplains, it must inform those who may be put at greater or continued risk. Written comments must be received by the City of Rio Grande City at the following address on or before August 03, 2016: Lyzette Peña, Executive Secretary, 5332 E U.S. Highway 83 and 956-487-0672, Attention: Lyzette Peña , Executive Secretary. Vaccinations - Staying up to date with vaccinations is another way to prevent illness and possible death. Even if a man had all recommended shots as a child, Dr. DePagter says men need several as an adult. For example: •A yearly flu shot is recommended for everyone six months of age and older. •Depending on age, a man might need a tetanus booster to protect from cuts and injuries. •Pertussis (or whooping cough) boosters protect both a father and mother and their baby. •A Zoster vaccination protects anyone against shingles. TMA has an adult vaccination Continue from page 4 chart and an adult vaccination fact sheet to help patients see what shots they need based on their age. Men should check with their doctor to make sure they are up-to-date on all their shots. STARRC OUNTY TOWNC RIER, JULY27,2016,S ECTIONI I,P AGE3 USDA Reminds Texas Producers of Aug. 1 Deadline to Enroll in Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage Programs U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Texas Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director, Judith A. Canales, reminds farmers and ranchers that they have until Aug. 1 to enroll in Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and/or Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs for the 2016 crop year. “Producers have already elected ARC or PLC, but they must enroll for the 2016 crop year by signing a contract before the Aug. 1 deadline to receive program benefits,” said Canales. “Producers are encouraged to contact their local FSA office to schedule an appointment to enroll.” The programs trigger financial protections for participating agricultural producers when market forces cause substantial drops in crop prices or revenues. Nationwide, more than 1.76 million farmers and ranchers are expected to sign contracts to enroll in ARC or PLC. Covered commodities under the programs include barley, canola, large and small chickpeas, corn, crambe, flaxseed, grain sorghum, lentils, mustard seed, oats, peanuts, dry peas, rapeseed, long grain rice, medium grain rice (which includes short grain and sweet rice), safflower seed, sesame, soybeans, sunflower seed and wheat. For more program information, contact your local FSA office or visit www.fsa.usda.gov/arc-plc. To find your local FSA office, visit http://offices.usda.gov. Since 2009, USDA has worked to strengthen and support American agriculture, an industry that supports one in 11 American jobs, provides American consumers with more than 80 percent of the food we consume, ensures that Americans spend less of their paychecks at the grocery store than most people in other countries, and supports markets for homegrown renewable energy and materials. USDA has also provided $5.6 billion in disaster relief to farmers and ranchers; expanded risk management tools with products like Whole Farm Revenue Protection; and helped farm businesses grow with $36 billion in farm credit. The Department has engaged its resources to support a strong next generation of farmers and ranchers by improving access to land and capital; building new markets and market opportunities; and extending new conservation opportunities. USDA has developed new markets for rural-made products, including more than 2,500 biobased products through USDA’s BioPreferred program; and invested $64 billion in infrastructure and community facilities to help improve the quality of life in rural America. Daddy longlegs spiders are easily recognized but most of us know little about them and there is a persistent myth about them. Let’s address the myth first. Daddy longlegs are said to have potent venom but fangs too short to bite people. Solid scientific evidence says that (1) their venom is about average for spiders and (2) their fangs aren’t shorter than those of a little brown recluse whose bite is serious. However, daddy longlegs fangs are probably much less muscular. Most importantly, there is NO record of daddy longlegs biting people! For any reason. Daddy longlegs spiders are easy to recognize. They have a short, cylindrical body about 1/2 to 1/3 inch long and eight thin, delicate legs about 2 inches long attached near the front of the body. The body is composed of two segments: a cephalothorax and abdomen. There are 8 eyes, three on each side and two in the middle. The overall color is grayish brown. than spiders. Hence, to be safe, refer to daddy longlegs spiders. In this article, our subject is Pholcus phalangioides. Daddy longlegs are also called cellar spiders because they’re often found in basements or caves. They’re also called vibrators because they sometimes shake when threatened. Perhaps it’s to scare intruders or to offer a less clear target. They will also, of course, readily retreat. I suppose we should consider daddy longleg spiders as beneficial because they kill insects and don’t bite. However, even if you have a cellar, you probably don’t want them around They build a loose, messy, non- the house. sticky web and hang inverted near its center. Their prey, mostly small flying insects, get tangled in the web and the spider quickly injects venom to calm them and winds them in additional webbing. Feasting may be immediate or delayed. If you’re ever in a conversation about daddy longlegs spiders, be aware that there are other species called daddy longlegs that are more closely related to scorpions STARR COUNTY TOWN CRIER, JULY 27, 2016, SECTION II, PAGE 4 TE OFRECEMOS ASEGUROS DE AUTOS, MOTOCICLETA Y CASA LIABILITY INSURANCE STARTING AS LOW AS $29.00 PER MO.
