To assist St. Augustine in administering to the sick we are asking your cooperation when submitting names for the Prayers of the Faithful and names to be added to the bulletin listing of the sick. The office staff will be requesting some details that will help determine the need for a clerical visit or assistance through a Eucharistic Minister for the homebound. The bulletin listing of the sick will be grouped bi-weekly so that we all can be aware of those newly added to the listing. The bulletin will maintain the listings for three months unless otherwise specified to be listed indefinitely. After three months names can be added once again if not otherwise listed as indefinite. Thank you for your assistance and cooperation. SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WORSHIP CHRISTIAN FORMATION Preparing for the Sunday readings Go to liturgy.slu.edu ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL Year Three: Equipping the Parish REFLECTION 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing." Martha was caught up in a whirlwind of her own making. She stressed herself out with all the tasks and chores she thought she had to do to host Jesus, but Jesus wasn't the one who expected all of that. He just wanted Martha's presence, her company and friendship. His only expectation was that Martha would prepare for him her heart, but she was fixated on preparing her home instead. How often do we create a similar whirlwind in our lives? How often do we fixate on external details, on making a good impression, on having all appearances looking just so, but forget what really matters? How often do we make ourselves "anxious and worried" about all we think we have to do? In today's Gospel Jesus calls us to stop the frenetic activity of our lives, to pause and listen, imitating Mary "who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak." This can seem impossible. We look at our calendars and our to-do lists and cannot find a single slot in which to squeeze quiet prayer or silent spiritual listening. But Jesus asks us to reorganize our priorities. He tells us, "There is need of only one thing." Really, Jesus? Have you seen our lists!? What can we possibly eliminate? Don't we need to do all of this? The Lord says no. What we need to do is to make time to be with him. The same Lord who turned water into wine and fed five thousand men with five loaves of bread and two fish can also multiply our time. So instead of being like Martha who tried to tell Jesus what to do-"Tell her to help me"-let's be like Mary who listened to what Jesus had to say. ©Liturgical Publications Inc. DEACON CORNER: (BY DEACON AL) The Responsorial Psalm is chosen to respond to the First Reading. The Psalms that we proclaim at Mass come from the book of Psalms in the Old Testament. From the time of the Jews, Psalms were a regular part of worship. We could even call the book of Psalms the Bible’s song book. The early Christians continued this practice of singing psalms in their worship, although now with a clearer understanding of how those psalms spoke of Jesus Christ. St. Augustine even wrote a series of homilies on the Psalms, showing their importance in the early church. In the middle ages, the psalms were shortened to just a couple of verses and were used after the first reading. Jesus would have known most if not all the Psalms by heart. Some of His last words were quotations from them: “My God, my God why have You forsaken me? (Ps.21/ 22) The Psalms form the basis of the Divine Office, the Prayer of the Church. Over a period of weeks, usually four, every Psalm in the Psalter is prayed by monks and nuns around the world. In this way, at every hour, all the different emotions of the world, its joys and its sorrows, are brought into Prayer. Year of Mercy: Forgiveness is a decision not a feeling. Baptism Parent Preparation Class Reminder: Summertime class (2-part) will be held on July 24 and July 31 (this is a slight change) from 12:15-2:15pm in PC 1-2 for Class 1 and PC 3 for Class 2. Please contact the Parish Office (Wanda Alvarado at Extension 1110) as soon as possible to register for this program. Adult Confirmation If you are an adult Catholic desiring the Sacrament of Confirmation, please contact Angy Corrigan (ext. 1117) at the parish office for general information. Interested in the Catholic Faith? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process offers the opportunity to begin inquiry into the teachings and the practice of Catholicism. The program offers varied paths for individuals who are unbaptized, those baptized in another Christian faith tradition, or baptized Catholics who have limited upbringing in the Church. Questions are welcome, dialogue is encouraged, prayer and support are integral, and very individual spiritual journeys are the norm. Just curious? Just wondering? Really interested? A bit nervous? Married/engaged to a Catholic and/or children in the faith and in need of information? Attending Mass (perhaps for years!) and feeling awkward in stepping forward? Know a little and thinking it’s all a bit mysterious? For further details, and registration, contact Mary Anne Fighera at 2756701 or Kathy Jones at 748-5587. EveryWoman The EveryWoman book group will resume meeting on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 6:30pm beginning on September 7th. Please contact the office if you are interested. These families, sixty years ago, made up 18% of the population. Due to recent events in the Middle East, it has caused these families to face devastating economical strain, and caused the population to decrease to less than 2% in the Holy Land. These families have relied on the income from the sale of their religious hand carved olive wood artifacts to tourists. So we have come to the USA to try to help support these families by bringing their artifacts to sell to you. All the proceeds from the sales will be sent back to the families of the Holy Land so that they may be able to keep their homes and provide for their families. The last few years were very tough for the Christian families, and this is the only source of income for them. Thank you for your support. POLICY FOR MEETINGS AT ST. AUGUSTINE CHURCH As God’s people, we know he loves children and seeing us do great things for one another. We are fortunate to have such a beautiful, grand facility to gather and do great things for one another, to share and spread his word. We are at a time in society that we must and should keep our children safe and protect all God’s children. Even in our holy place, we must be vigilant of our children’s whereabouts and keep them safe. It is VIRTUS policy (diocesan policy for protecting children) that no child be left unattended in the halls, commons, church, classroom or exterior of the buildings without an adult 18 years of age and VIRTUS certified. Please be advised that if you bring your child to a meeting, the child must be in the meeting room with you at all times and not sent outside, in the hallway or any other area of the facility. It is the responsibility of the meeting leaders to make sure any children brought to a meeting remain in the meeting room with you. Hall monitors and staff will open the door to accompany your children into your meeting room for their safety if they are found unaccompanied in the halls, different classroom, commons or exterior of the building. ©Liturgical Publications Inc.
