be requesting some details that will help determine the need for a clerical
visit or assistance through a Eucharistic Minister for the homebound. The
bulletin listing of the sick will be grouped bi-weekly so that we all can be
aware of those newly added to the listing. The bulletin will maintain the
listings for three months unless otherwise specified to be listed
indefinitely. After three months names can be added once again if not

Year Three: Equipping the Parish
REFLECTION
27th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
"When you have done all you have been commanded, say, 'We are
unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'" What
a humble attitude this would be! Jesus challenges us today not to boast,
not to seek special praise, not to consider ourselves worthy of some
great reward when we follow him. Rather, he honestly reminds us that it
is simply our duty to do all we "have been commanded."
God made us. Our lives are a result of his loving initiative. Giving
ourselves back to him through "the obedience of faith" (as the Second
Vatican Council called it), is truly the only appropriate response. Of
course we are free NOT to practice this obedience. We are free to reject
God, to ignore his commandments, even to make ourselves his enemies.
But nonetheless it remains true that what we ought to do is to love God
and follow his ways. And Jesus suggests today that this simple obedience should be a given in our lives. Following the commandments is
merely what we are obligated to do.
But, let's not forget that we are also free to do more. Because of the
nature of love, we can never really exhaust it. We can always love more,
serve more devotedly, give more generously. Perhaps Jesus is calling us
to focus less on meeting the bare-bones requirements of Christianity,
and instead to shift our efforts farther in the direction of going above
and beyond the call of duty. Instead of asking what is the least I HAVE
to do, we would do well to ask, what ELSE can I do? What else can I do
to show my gratitude to God for all he has given me? What else can I do
to serve his people and nurture the world he has made? Let us aim to
become truly profitable servants.

The following are two letters from Bishop DiLorenzo reaffirming the
Church's teachings on human life and the sanctity of marriage. It is
important to understand these teachings as we approach the upcoming
elections.

The Catholic Church makes its position very clear as it pertains to the
protection of human life, social justice initiatives, and the importance of
family life. From the very beginning, Catholic teaching informs us that
every human life is sacred from conception until natural death. The right
to life is a fundamental, human right for the unborn and any law denying
the unborn the right to life is unequivocally unjust. Legislative issues
pertaining to these matters are advocated on behalf of myself and Bishop Loverde, of the Diocese of Arlington, before the Virginia General
Assembly, U.S. Congress, and with state and federal agencies and administrations through the Virginia Catholic Conference, a public policy
advocacy organization. Through this organization, elected officials in
Virginia are aware of the Church’s positions on such important issues.
We continue to maintain an open communication with public officials
who make on-going decisions impacting critical, moral and social issues. This is a responsibility I take seriously, along with my brother
bishops, to reach out to public leaders to explain Catholic principles and
encourage them to protect human life and dignity in all decisions they
make. We always pray for our Catholic leaders that they make the right
choice, act in the best judgment and in good conscience, knowing the
values and teachings of the Catholic Church. It is the duty of all Catholics, no matter their profession, to decide through an upright and informed conscience as to their worthiness to receive the Sacrament of the
Holy Eucharist.

More than a year after the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage, and
despite recent statements from the campaign trail, the Catholic Church’s
2000-year-old teaching to the truth about what constitutes marriage
(continued on next column……)
remains unchanged and resolute. As Catholics, we believe, all humans
warrant dignity and deserve love and respect, and unjust discrimination is
always wrong. Our understanding of marriage, however, is a matter of
justice and fidelity to our Creator’s original design. Marriage is the only
institution uniting one man and one woman with each other and with any
child who comes from their union. Redefining marriage furthers no one’s
rights, least of all those of children, who should not purposely be deprived
of the right to be nurtured and loved by a mother and a father.
We call on Catholics and all those concerned for preserving this sacred
union to unite in prayer, to live and speak out with compassion and charity about the true nature of marriage - the heart of family life.

Do you have a child you’d like to have baptized? Baptisms are celebrated
once a month during one of the weekend Liturgies. Parents should contact
the parish at least two months prior to the desired month of celebration
and attend the preparation session. For dates and further details, please

If you are an adult Catholic desiring the Sacrament of Confirmation,

Interested in the Catholic Faith?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process offers the opportunity to
begin inquiry into the teachings and the practice of Catholicism. The
program offers varied paths for individuals who are unbaptized, those
baptized in another Christian faith tradition, or baptized Catholics who
have limited upbringing in the Church.
Questions are welcome, dialogue is encouraged, prayer and support are
integral, and very individual spiritual journeys are the norm.
Just curious? Just wondering? Really interested? A bit nervous? Married/
engaged to a Catholic and/or children in the faith and in need of information? Attending Mass (perhaps for years!) and feeling awkward in
stepping forward? Know a little and thinking it’s all a bit mysterious?

EveryWoman , a reading/study group, meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month starting promptly by 7pm. This Fall, we will be reading "Acts of the Apostles" (Part One) from the Church of the Holy Spirit
series from Threshold Bible Study. The immediate upcoming schedule is

October 6 (no meeting because this is CARITAS week), October 11(on a
Tuesday, an exception as we missed last week), October 19, November 2,

EDGE &LIFETEEN
This week at EDGE/LIFETEEN we discussed the working of the Holy
Spirit in our lives. Our teens learned that the Holy Spirit was sent to all
of us by Jesus through our Baptism and Confirmation. They also discussed the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and how they can help us be better
people and live in a way that reveals that we are children of God. This
semester we will be diving deeper into each Fruit of the Holy Spirit. Our
next session will be held on Monday, October 24th. TOPIC: Charity and
Generosity.

The Shepherd Center of Chesterfield is a non profit interfaith organization
dedicated to helping seniors in the community remain independent in their
own homes. Those residents of Chesterfield 50 years of age or older can
receive transportation to medical appointments, for prescription pick up
and for grocery shopping. All transportation is arranged through the Shepherd Center and is provided by volunteers. If you need transportation or
would like to volunteer, call 804-706-6689.
Individual and Family Counseling is available at St. Augustine on
Mondays with a counselor from Commonwealth Catholic Charities.

RITE OF ACCEPTANCE
This Saturday, October 1st, we celebrate one of the rituals that accompany Christian initiation: The Rite of Acceptance into the Order of
Catechumens. Darron Gullette and Brian Hughes came to us several
months ago, inquiring about Jesus and about how we, who are Roman
Catholics, follow him. They have been among us, seen Christ’s power,
and have begun to be influenced by His grace. His grace led them to
today, where we have the privilege of accepting them, embracing them,
and formally beginning what will be a lifelong relationship with Christ
and the Church. On Saturday, they embrace the cross and accept the
Sacred Scriptures and become known to us as catechumens. As such,
they become part of our Church and from this day on, until they complete their preparation and are called to the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, we, as a parish community, commit to journeying with them, sharing our liturgy of the Word, our Tradition, our works
of charity and justice, and our life in community. Today, the Church
asks us to care for them as a mother care for her children and we, as a
parish community, joyfully accept this responsibility as part of our baptismal call..
Starting Tuesday, October 4th, our parish will be blessed to have Salvadoran Sisters Deysi Delgado and Telma Ramirez of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Jesus join us for the next 2 1/2 years. We are excited
to have their much needed help working with Amanda Roberts, Coordinator of Christian Formation, in various Hispanic ministries: Sr. Deysi
will be working with Renovación Carismática, Adult VIDA (LIFE),
Guadalupanos, and Hispanic family ministry and Sr. Telma wil be
working Jóvenes para Cristo (Hispanic Young Adult group) and Respeto (program for Hispanic youth), Quinceañeras, Hispanic Liturgical
Ministries and Llamados a Servir (“Called to Serve”). We look forward
to the gift of their presence.
WINGS’ (Women In God’s Spirit) - meets on Wednesdays at
9:45am in the church hall. All women are welcome!

Roofers and Painters
The Building and Grounds Committee is back up and meeting regularly
to plan for long range and immediate facility needs. The committee is
presently addressing needs for roofing repairs, painting projects and
light electrical work around the building and will be considering
proposals from qualified roofers, painters and electricians. If you or

RITO DE ACEPTACION EN EL CATECUMENO
Este sábado, el 1º de octubre, celebramos uno de los ritos de iniciación
Cristiana de adultos: el Rito para Aceptación en el Catecumenado. Darron
Gullette y Brian Hughes expresaron interés hace ya varios meses, en aprender sobre el Señor Jesucristo y cómo nosotros los Católicos, vivimos la
vida Cristiana. Han aprendido de nosotros, han comenzado a vivir una
vida de gracia y se han comenzado a dejar guiar por la gracia del Espíritu
Santo que los trajo a este punto en su camino cuando comienzan formalmente una relación con el Señor Jesucristo y su Iglesia que continuará toda
su vida. Tenemos el privilegio de abrazarlos en la fe durante esta etapa en
la cual aceptan la cruz y el evangelio, y desde este momento, serán conocidos como catecúmenos. Como tal, ya son parte de la iglesia y, hasta que
completen su preparación para los sacramentos de Bautismo, Confirmación
y Eucaristía. Nosotros, como comunidad parroquial, nos comprometemos a
compartir con ellos las Sagradas Escrituras, la Tradición de la Iglesia
Católica, en invitarlos a ser parte de nuestras obras caritativas y nuestra
vida comunitaria. Hoy la iglesia nos pide que nos ocupemos de ellos como
una madre se ocupa de sus hijos, y con alegría aceptamos esta responsabilidad que es parte de nuestro llamado bautismal.
Comenzando el martes, 4 de octubre, tenemos el placer de r ecibir a las
Hermanas Franciscanas Misioneras de Jesus, Hermana Deysi Delgado y
Hermana Telma Ramirez. Las hermanas son Salvadoreñas y estarán con
nosotros los próximos 2 años y medio. Durante este tiempo, estarán trabajando con Amanda Roberts, Coordinadora de Formación Cristiana, con
various iministerios y grupos: la Hmna. Deysi estará acompañando a Renovación Carismática, VIDA (adultos), Guadalupanos, y ministerio a las
familias, y la Hmna. Telma estará trabajando con Jóvenes para Cristo, Respeto (programa para adolescents), Quinceañeras, ministerios litúrgicos y
Llamados a Servir. Con alegría anticipamos las bendición de su llegada y
su ayuda en estos ministerios.

Declaración del Obispo Francis X. DiLorenzo sobre la enseñanza de
matrimonio de la Iglesia Católica:
Habiendo pasado más de un año después de la decisión del Tribunal
Supremo de EE.UU. sobre el matrimonio, y pese a las recientes declaraciones de la campaña electoral, la enseñanza de la Iglesia Católica de los
pasados 2000 años enseña la verdad sobre lo que constituye el matrimonio
y se mantiene resuelta y sin cambios.
Como católicos, creemos, que todos los seres humanos merecen dignidad, amor y respeto, y la injusta discriminación es siempre mala. Sin embargo, nuestro entendimiento del matrimonio, es una cuestión de justicia y
fidelidad al diseño original de nuestro Creador. El matrimonio es la única
institución que une a un hombre y a una mujer entre sí y con cualquier niño
que proviene de su unión. Redefinir el matrimonio no promueve los
derechos de nadie, y menos el de los niños, que no deben ser deliberadamente privados del derecho a ser formados y ser queridos por una madre y
un padre.
Recurimos a los católicos y a todos los interesados para preservar esta
unión sagrada a unirse en oración, a vivir y hablar con compasión y caridad
sobre la verdadera naturaleza del matrimonio - el corazón de la vida
familiar.

de Disfraces el Vier nes, 28 de octubr e, de 6 - 8pm en el estacionamiento
del “Outreach”. Tendremos entretenimiento, dulces y golosinas, y asaremos marshmallows sobre el fuego. Hot dogs, doughnuts (rosquillas), chocolate caliente, y cidra caliente de manzana estará a la venta por medio de
“St. Augustine of Hippo Café. Habrá un premio para el baul major decorado. Necesitamos baúles. Decore su baúl y diviértase repartiendo dulces.

CARITAS - Congregaciones alrededor de Richmond involucrados
para asegurar albergue, CARITAS ( congr egaciones alr ededor
Richmond implicados para Asegurar la Vivienda ) , se llevará a cabo
en la Iglesia St. Augustine desde el 1º hasta el 7 de octubre. Si no está
familiarizado con este evento , seremos el anfitrión de 40 hombres sin
hogar en nuestra iglesia cada noche de 6 pm a las 6 la mañana siguiente. . Necesitamos donaciones de calcetines, ropa interior, mochilas,
jugo y cereales para el desayuno. Pueden dejar estos artículos en el
centro de información en el compartimiento marcado "CARITAS " .

Techadores y pintores
El Comité edificio y los jardines se están reuniendo nuevamente y
regularmente para planificar las necesidades inmediatas y de largo
plazo de las instalaciones. El comité se está dirigiendo actualmente a
la necesidad de reparaciones de techos, proyectos de pintura y trabajos
de electricidad en todo el edificio, y estaremos considerando las propuestas de los techadores , pintores y electricistas calificados. Si usted
o alguien que usted conoce podría estar interesado y calificado, por
llame a Craig Templeton, Coordinador de Mantenimiento Parroquial.

El “Shepherd Center of Chesterfield es una or ganización inter r eligioso sin lucro dedicada a ayudar a que las personas mayores en la
comunidad siguan siendo independientes en sus propios hogares . Los
residentes de Chesterfield de 50 años de edad o más podrán recibir el
transporte a las citas médicas , para recoger las recetas de y para hacer
las compras de comida. Todo el transporte está dispuesta a través del

REFLEXIONES
27º DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
¡"Auméntanos la fe"! Tal como los apóstoles le pidieron al
Señor, deberíamos hacerlo nosotros todos los días en nuestra
oración. Aunque, quizás usted me diga: Yo creo en el Señor,
tengo una fe grande. La respuesta es que todos tenemos el deseo
de creer en él con más solidez. La fe es un don, es un regalo que
recibimos al ser bautizados. Pero el compromiso es saber crecer
ese regalo en el trayecto de nuestra vida. Pidamos, pues, que se
nos sea dada abundantemente. Vivir en la fe es estar atentos a los
signos de los tiempos, escuchando la voz de Dios, atentos siempre. Porque en medio de tantas restricciones económicas, falta de
trabajo y de vivienda, se nos olvida lo principal: recordar que
tenemos un Padre que nos cuida. ¿Cómo cuido mi fe? ¿De qué
forma soy modelo de fe para la familia y la sociedad?
Existen personas con una fe firme en las enfermedades, las humillaciones y las penas. Las hemos visto y quizá vivimos con
ellas; pueden ser nuestros abuelos, padres, hermanos, hermanas y
amigos. Ellos han sabido responder admirablemente; no se han
olvidado de nada de lo que el Señor nos ha dicho y hecho desde
la cruz. El Papa Francisco lo explica de la siguiente manera:
"El Apóstol Juan (1 Jn 5, 4) dice que la victoria sobre el mundo
es nuestra fe. ¡Nuestra fe vence siempre! La fe es victoria" (homilía, el 14 de enero de 2016).

1. Ser miembros inscritos de la parroquia (no menos de
6 meses) y que atiendan con r egular idad a la misa.
2. Debe haber recibido los Sacramentos de Bautismo y
Eucaristía.
3. Debe estar participando en el programa de Educación
Religiosa.
