Behold, I have given you the power to “tread upon serpents” and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.’” Luke 10: 17-20 Dear St. Sabina Parish, It is odd for me to think that I have to move already to another assignment, but I know that this is the life of the priesthood of Jesus Christ. I wanted to share my sincere gratitude to you all one last time for this past year, my first year as a priest, being such a good one. I know I was rusty when I first started, but I believe I matured as the year progressed. Thank you to those who have prayed for me and continue to pray for me as I make my first transition into my new parish. Every parish has a different personality, so I know that I will have to adjust to this new personality. I'm sorry that Fr. Jeff will have to do more work since no replacement is coming in to St. Sabina, so please pray for him as he resumes the full life of the parish at St. Sabina. I can sincerely say that St. Sabina is a good parish to have started the priesthood at. I will miss the parish and the parishioners. May God bless you all, keep you close to His most Sacred Heart, and the Immaculate Heart of our Mother Mary. Godspeed. Fr. Curt Vogel The Lord is reliant upon us, on each and every one of us, to serve as laborers in His vineyard. There are incredible needs among humankind. Each of us probably realizes that but part of our frustration is viewing ourselves as such a small contributor to helping the Lord. Note that all those He sent returned, and they returned with joy and a great sense of satisfaction. They learned that when they did what Jesus told them to do, they could anticipate blessings beyond their expectations. They also reported to Jesus that they were successful “in your name.” That is what will make Thank You! Reflection on the Readings As we continue delving into the mystery of the paschal journey with Jesus, the refrain from Psalm 66 clues us into the theme running through this Sunday’s readings: “Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.” Joy in the Lord, for all that the Lord has done and will continue to do as we travel the road of discipleship, is what we heartily proclaim this Sunday. The psalmist recalls God’s loving care for the people during the Exodus and knows that God’s love manifested in past events will and does continue to be made real in our daily lives, here and now. The Lord’s power has done wonders for all the people and we shout with joy, as we experience the Lord present and active in our lives. true joy ultimately comes not from defeating Satan but from intimate union with God expressed in the image of “your names are written in heaven.” This is the ultimate joy that we celebrate today. No matter what happens, we are to rejoice in the fact that in Jesus, God has chosen to be with us, and we are to proclaim that from the rooftops. Rejection, conflict, oppression will not win out, for the kingdom of God is at hand, and always will be. This joy is meant for all, symbolized in the number seventy-two, a number inclusive of all the nations of the world as referenced in chapter 10 of Genesis. We too, in fidelity to our journey as disciples, are called to be inclusive of all, proclaiming The first reading comes from the last chapter of Isaiah. God’s joyful reign and loving concern for all. The rich images of life, abundance, continued vitality and nourishment suffuse this text. From the lifelessness Paul adds a final note to this aspect of joy. That note and death of the Babylonian exile God has transformed centers on the cross. His boast and his joy is in the Jerusalem into an overflowing nourishing mother who cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Even when we never ceases to be attuned to the needs of her children. experience the marks of Jesus on our own bodies Isaiah’s joy in God overflows as he images Jerusalem through the rejections and opposition of others, still our as a nursing mother who is ever ready to comfort and response is one of joy. We are assured that no matter give delight to her children. Life teems all around and what happens, God will continue to be our source of life, within Jerusalem, symbol of God’s people, and of God’s abundance, vitality and joy. So indeed we too can boast presence with the people. Isaiah goes even further in in the cross. That life of sacrifice, of care and concern imaging God: “as a mother comforts her child, so will I for the other no matter the cost, is the hallmark any comfort you.” Everything in this reading makes us cry disciple who walks the paschal journey with Jesus. out to God with joy. Reflect on how God’s life-giving Luke’s gospel passage speaks of Jesus, the very joy of power has been operative in God in our midst, missioning his followers, seventy-two your life. Name some things in in all, to go forth and proclaim the empire or reign of your life that make you “cry out God to all. By healing and establishing a realm of to God with joy.” peace, well-being, tranquility and abundance among the people, God’s reign is made real and effective. Biagio Mazza, Ultimately that abundance is centered on Jesus’ Pastoral Associate presence and action in our midst, the very presence and action of God.
