From the Pastor / Vocations

FROM THE PASTOR:
Your generous support to those in need has been overwhelming. Because of your repose to a plea
for help from our neighboring parish, Immaculate Conception in Sealy, St. Bartholomew was able to
provide financial assistance to the flood victims in Sealy as well as a truck load of groceries and three
truckloads of baby items including diapers, baby wash and clothing. Special thanks goes to Gabriel
Project and St. Vincent de Paul volunteers. Below is a letter of thanks received from
Rev. Eric Pitre,
Pastor of Immaculate Conception.
———————————————————————————————————————————Dear Fr. Wayne and all the Parishioners at St. Bartholomew’s:
On behalf of the families in Austin County that have suffered such devastating losses during the recent
flooding, we send our heartfelt thanks to you for your generous donations. Some families have suffered the
greatest loss — that of the lives of loved ones. Others have lost their homes and vehicles, their pets, and their
livestock. The stories that we have heard are staggering and serve as reminders to us that each day is indeed
a gift and that as Mother Teresa said, “in this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with
great love.”
As stewards of these funds, the members of our staff that are assisting flood victims are interviewing each
person, assessing their individual needs and dispersing funds as fairly as possible. The donations you made
will certainly go a long way in helping families rebuild their lives.
Your in Christ

WHO HAS BEEN A HERO OF RELIGIOUS LIBERTY IN THE CHURCH?
Saint Thomas More: Thomas More was an English Catholic
lawyer who served as Lord
Chancellor and a close advisor to
King Henry VIII. More opposed the king’s separation from the
Catholic Church and his naming himself as Supreme Head of the
Church of England. More was imprisoned for his refusal to take
the oath required by a law that
disparaged papal power and
required acknowledging the children of Henry and Anne Boleyn
(the king’s second wife after his divorce from Catherine of Aragon) as legitimate heirs to the throne. In 1535, More was tried for
treason, convicted on perjured testimony, and beheaded. He is the
patron saint of religious freedom. For more Facts on Saints go to

mercy for the benefit of those who by reading these things will be comforted
in their souls and will have the courage to approach Me.” (Diary, 1693)
From the Diary of St. Faustina
Open Your Heart
Tell souls not to place within their own hearts obstacles to My
mercy, which so greatly wants to act within them. My mercy
works in all those hearts which open their doors
to it. Both the sinner and the righteous person have need
of My mercy. Conversion, as well as perseverance, is a grace of My
mercy. (Diary #1577)

Guiding Words
By Kimberly Baker
There was once a four-year-old girl who had some
delays with speech development. Her doctor and
parents agreed that she should work with a speechlanguage pathologist to correct this
difficulty. There
were times during the sessions when it was frustrating,
not being able to form her mouth or move her tongue
the right way to make sounds which came so easily for
everyone else. There were also those rare, joyful moments when suddenly she was able to speak more
clearly and pronounce the word exactly as she had
intended. After several years, the speech difficulties
were corrected, the sessions came to an end, and the
girl continued on with her life.
That little girl was me. When I look back at those
years, I remember the speech therapist as a woman
who
tirelessly
encouraged me to try again
and again as I worked to overcome my difficulties. I no
longer remember her name, but she is one of those
special teachers I will always remember from my early
childhood. I wonder how many other young children
benefited from her gentle reassurance and guidance.
Today, it is easy for me to take for granted what I can
do with my incredible power of speech. We live in a
world which takes delight in wit, quick "comebacks," and
clever wordplay in political discourse, entertainment,
and, of course, in everyday conversation. It is easy to
forget the power of words to either tear down or to affirm
others, and even easier to take for granted the ability to
speak at all.
A culture that respects life seeks to accompany others in various life circumstances, reminding them of their
worth and dignity, which cannot be taken away. When
we encounter fragility and brokenness, especially in
those who are struggling or suffering in some way, we
each have the capacity to guide others to the light of
God's love through our attentiveness and tender encouragement-especially through our words.
It is in concrete circumstances that we can each be a
ray of light to another, reflecting back his or her dignity
through the words we choose. The person may be facing a terminal illness, wondering whether life is worth
living; living with a disability and questioning her value;
or struggling with depression, lacking the hope to continue on. God has a purpose for every life he creates, and
it is amazing to know that each one of us has been
loved from all eternity.
We have each been created with a tremendous
capacity to love. Let us be attentive to the daily opportunities to speak to others of their sacredness in God's
eyes. How much are we willing to gently guide otherssometimes out of very dark places-closer to the light of
God's love? However brief the encounter, you never
know how much your loving, affirming words can positively
impact
one
life.

CHAPTER FIVE
IV. POLITICS AND ECONOMY IN DIALOGUE
FOR HUMAN FULFILLMENT
191. We need to grow in the conviction that a decrease in the pace
of production and consumption can at times give rise to another
form of progress. Efforts to promote a sustainable use of natural
resources are an investment capable of providing other economic
benefits. If we look at the larger picture, forms of production that
impact less on the environment can prove profitable. It is a matter
of openness to different possibilities, directing energy along new
channels.
192. A path of productive development could generate intelligent
and profitable ways of reusing, revamping and recycling while also
improving the energy efficiency of cities. Productive diversification
offers the fullest possibilities to create and innovate, while protecting
the environment and creating more employment. Such creativity
would be a worthy expression of our most noble human qualities.
To find ever new ways of despoiling nature, purely for the sake of
new consumer items and quick profit, would be less worthy and
creative and more superficial.
193. We need also to think of containing growth by setting some
reasonable limits and even retracing our steps before it is too late.
The time has come to accept decreased growth in some parts of the
world in order to provide resources for other places to experience
healthy growth. Benedict XVI said that technologically advanced
societies must be prepared to encourage soberer lifestyles.
194. It is not enough to balance the protection of nature with financial gain, or the preservation of the environment with progress.
Halfway measures simply delay the inevitable disaster. It is a
matter of redefining our notion of progress. Development that does
not leave in its wake a better world and an integrally higher quality
of life cannot be considered progress. Talk of sustainable growth
usually becomes a way of distracting attention and offering
excuses. Social and environmental responsibility of businesses often
is
reduced to a series of marketing and image-enhancing measures.
195. The principle of maximization of profits reflects a misunderstanding of the very concept of the economy. As long as production
is increased, little concern is given to whether it is at the cost of future resources or the health of the environment. Only when the
economic and social costs of using up shared environmental resources are recognized with transparency, can those actions be
considered ethical. An instrumental way of reasoning is at work
whether resources are allocated by the market or by state central
planning.

Baptism/Bautismo:
SEGUIR LOS PASOS A
CRISTO
La
gran
me siga” (Lucas 9:23).
