PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I saw this reflection in Bringing Home the Word published by Ligouri Publications
and wanted to share it with you.
THE DAILY CROSS
“He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’
Peter said in reply, ‘The Christ of God.’” Luke 9:18-24
I’m a woman of routine, particularly in the mornings. I do certain things in a certain way every morning as if I’m crossing items off a to-do list. Get up. Rub eyes.
Stumble to the bathroom. Put in contacts. Wash face. Take shower. And on and on.
Even if you aren’t a routine-driven person during the day, you probably do some of
the same things every morning.
What if “take up your cross” was also on our to-do list, right after “take shower”
or “drink coffee?” Jesus asks us to do nothing less in today’s Gospel when he declares
we should take up our cross daily. Ugh. I’m not so enthusiastic about that. Aren’t
crosses just for some days – those harder-than-ordinary days? Not every day, Lord.
That seems like too much.
But while we may resist, we know the Lord is right. Even Jesus, who didn’t carry
a physical cross every day, carried the burden of knowing His way of life would lead
Him to crucifixion. He was aware of what lay ahead for Him – but even with that
heavy emotional cross, He still brought healing and peace to so many. He carried his
cross with grace, courage, and perseverance.
Jesus doesn’t simply tell us to carry our cross; He also says, “Follow me.” Everyone has crosses, but how we carry them makes a difference. Do we follow Him in
the way we carry our cross – without complaining, still praising God, always seeking
to bring life to others? Are we still joyful and hopeful while carrying our cross?
Jesus has given us quite an example. When drinking your coffee tomorrow morning, take time to ponder how you will take up your cross – and follow Jesus – that
day.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION:
To what do I need to say no so that I’m freer to love and care for others?
What routines and traditions keep me mindful of God and my vocation?
TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
From the Servant’s Heart
Prayers, Please
Please do me a favor of praying for the following people and
intentions:
For Mrs. Gina Aguilar, our dear outgoing principal who is giving birth to her second child anytime this month. May God give
her the blessing of a safe delivery for her child. With God’s
grace, may her new child be healthy, happy, holy, and wise.
For Maria Estevez, she is our active and dedicated volunteer
who helps us in our funeral Masses and in many other important
liturgical events. Her son Kenneth was involved in a car accident , please pray for his healing.
For the victims of the mass shooting in Orlando. That God will
give eternal rest and peace to those who were killed. May God
have mercy on their souls. May God also have mercy on the soul
of the gunman. May he, too, rest in peace. May the Lord also
bless the families of the victims.
Of course today, since it’s Father’s Day, please offer prayers
for all our fathers living and deceased. For all fathers in the
world. It’s easy to be a father. But it’s not easy to be a Dad.
They need all the divine help they can get from “The Best Dad”
up above. May all our fathers be healthy, loving, and wise.
Thank you so very much!
The clock is ticking. I would like to spend some of my remaining days thanking all of you for all the service you’ve done for our
church.
Thank you my dear lectors. How I wish I could name each
one of you. Thank you for volunteering to proclaim God’s Word
to us every Sunday. For taking the time to come early to the sacristy and rehearse to make sure all of us would be nourished well
by what you proclaim. This “Thank You” is for all our lectors in
both English and Spanish Masses.
Thank you our dear ushers. Again, for both the English and
Spanish Masses. Thank you so very much for your dedication.
Every Sunday, you are there to open the doors and to welcome
the People of God with your smile, warmth, and kindness. Because of you, people are able to find a seat. While you guys
would be standing the entire service. Thank you for distributing
our bulletins so we are informed about what’s going on in our
parish. Thank you so very much for being the face of Jesus and
our parish.
Thank you so very much Mary Felix, Debbie Roberts, Debbie
Dominik and Leah Cruz-Wood! You have been a wonderful
blessings to our school. Thank you for serving our students as
you’ve shared the faith and your wisdom. I wish you both the
best in your future plans.
Vacation Bible School
One of our parish thrusts is continuing education in our faith.
My dear parents, please register your kids in our Vacation Bible
School. This week will be one of the meaningful things they can
ever do this summer so they can continue learning more about
Jesus and the Catholic Faith. Many of us Catholics easily convert to other religions simply because we don’t have a strong
foundation. Besides, this will be both a fun and learning experience for the kids. Thank you, Theresa and Mary, for organizing
PAGE 3
this. Thank you, too, to all our friends who have volunteered to
serve our kids. Thank you so much for your precious time and
gifts you’d be sharing with the kids. God bless you.
“The Silent Scream”
Another priority of our parish is to defend life. Please continue
to pray for the end of abortion. It’s very unfortunate that we have
an abortion mill here in our very own City of Downey. This is the
clinic along Firestone just right across Ralph’s. As you pass by
this clinic, shoot the place with your Hail Mary’s. Pray that God
will enlighten those people engaged in abortion.
I have a favor to ask. Please check out on YouTube “The
Silent Scream.” It’s an old film by a former abortionist himself, Dr.
Bernard Nathanson, MD. In the film, he shows us how the defenseless unborn is terminated. Warning, this film is not for the
faint-hearted. But it sure is powerful enough to inform us how
horrifying and tragic this is to happen in this great country called
“America.” Allow me to paraphrase what Dr. Bernard said, “If
America was able to put man on the moon, there must also be a
way for this wealthy and perhaps even the most powerful nation
on earth to respect the right of the unborn child to live in this
world.”
Thank you so much, Padre Escobita!
On behalf of our parish, I’d like to thank Fr. Ed Broom, for
serving us for the last four Tuesdays. Thank you for your
Masses, great homilies, and enriching Marian talks.
Thank you so very much to Deacon Carlos and Betty Origel
and everyone in the Hispanic Community who have helped facilitate everything for this event.
Thank you so very much to Elvira and Lalo Vasquez. To their
children, Matthew, Giovanna, Tony, and Theresa, who have also
helped and the rest of their team. Without the Vasquez family,
we might not have had this wonderful visit of Padre Escobita.
It is amazing that a lot of people do really come and take
notes as they listen to this great Anglo priest who is able to
speak Spanish very fluently. All for the love of our Blessed
Mother Mary, Mother of Christ.
Last Sunday English Mass for Fr. Pako and Fr. Joseph
I would like to invite you to the 9:30 am English Mass on
Sunday, June 26. Let’s praise and thank God for all the blessings we have received as a community. Please join Fr. Pako and
me in thanking God for being given the chance to serve you for
some time. To thank God for all the blessings we have received.
And that greatest blessing is YOU. See you then!
Oh BTW!
By the way good news! We have been assigned an Associate
Pastor. His name is Fr. Ambrose Udoji. That’s all the information
I can give you right now. But please do pray for him and of
course, for our new pastor, Monsignor Lorenzo Miranda. Thank
you, Lord, for the gift of these two
“The most important thing priests who will serve us.

children is to love their
mother.”

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
Children and internet: tips for the summer
Summer vacation is here and time away
from school could mean extra time online for
children - a lot of it happening when you’re not
there to supervise. Here are some tips to help
keep children safe.
1. Talk to children about internet predators
and whether they have ever been approached
online.
2. Keep the computer in a common area of
the home.
3. Establish rules for when children are allowed to use their cell phone.

MINISTERIO HISPANO
Me levanto.
Me froto los ojos. Tropezándome voy al baño. A ponerme los lentes de contactos.
Lavarme la cara. Tomar una ducha. Y sigue y sigue.
UGH. No estoy
tan entusiasmado.
pesada cruz emocional, todavía traía paz y sanación a muchos. Él llevó su cruz con
gracia, valor y perseverancia.

Bendiciones,
Diácono Carlos
