Dear Parishioners,
Estimado Feligrés,
Do you not remember anything what I said to Philip when he asked
Jesus to show him to the Father, and that would be sufficient? "Don't
you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long
time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say,
'Show us the Father'?
¿No recuerdas acaso lo que dije a Felipe cuando pidió a Jesús que le
mostrara al Padre, y eso les bastaría? "Felipe: le dijo: ¿Tanto tiempo
hace que estoy con vosotros y no me habéis conocido? El que me ha
visto a mí ha visto al Padre: ¿Cómo dices tu muéstranos al Padre?
And us at this point in the journey, have we become aware of this? If
we recognize that God considers us adults in the Spirit and that, as
such, is he trusting us greater responsibilities, which, in itself, we have
commitments of the Kingdom and, consequently, the risk of being
right, or not, in the assigned mission? Do we know, what it is to
become an Ambassador of a State or of a Kingdom? Do we know that
the Ambassador, identifies with the State or Kingdom, with that honor,
has the authority to commit his attitudes as if he were the own Head of
state? Don’t we know history tells us that many wars have been caused
as a result or consequence of the mistakes of the ambassadors? Are we,
as Ambassadors of the Kingdom of Heaven, aware of what we are and
the serious commitments that imposed that honor?

Gospel reading Luke 9:18-24
Once when Jesus was praying by himself, and the disciples
were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I
am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still
others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.’” Then he said
to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said in reply,
“The Christ of God.” He scolded them and directed them not to
tell this to anyone. He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the
scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.” Then he
said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny
himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever
wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for
my sake will save it.” Brief commentary: Who is J esus
Christ and what does it mean to follow him, to be his disciples?
These two all-important questions are at the fore of today’s
gospel. All three Synoptic gospels offer variations of this narrative, and the gospel of John includes one such confession of
faith from Martha of Bethany, prior to Jesus raising her brother
Lazarus, and one from Peter in response to the risen Jesus’
questions. As it was then, so it is today: regardless of the often
confused and conflicting opinions that people continue to hold
about Jesus, the Christian is one who has come to believe, to
have the certainty and faith, that Jesus is the Christ of God.
However, to make sure that his disciples (and none) misunderstand his version of what being ‘Christ’ meant, Jesus enjoins
them to keep quiet and then describes his messianic mission as
one involving rejection, suffering, death, and resurrection. Yet,
it is not enough for Christians to believe in Jesus, the Christian
is also one who loves Jesus and so follows him. Following involves ‘self-denial’ and commitment to the kingdom of God
and to the Gospel come what may. The ‘daily cross’ is therefore that daily radical commitment to living the Gospel and
being agents of God’s merciful and saving love in and for the
world. Ironically, those who ‘forget’ and ‘lose’ themselves in
love of God and neighbor who will ‘find’ and ‘save’ themselves; and those whose motives are self-preservation and selfinterest will find that they gain little to nothing. Being a disciple of Jesus involves being like him by responding to God’s
grace and love.
Lectura del Evangelio: Lucas 9:18-24
Un día en que Jesús, acompañado de sus discípulos, había ido a
un lugar solitario para orar, les preguntó: "¿Quién dice la gente
que soy yo?" Ellos contestaron: "Unos dicen que eres Juan el
Bautista; otros, que Elías, y otros, que alguno de los antiguos
profetas que ha resucitado". Él les dijo: "Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen
que soy yo?" Respondió Pedro: "El Mesías de Dios". Él les ordenó severamente que no lo dijeran a nadie. Después les dijo: "Es
necesario que el Hijo del hombre sufra mucho, que sea rechazado
por los ancianos, los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas, que sea
entregado a la muerte y que resucite al tercer día". Luego, dirigiéndose a la multitud, les dijo: "Si alguno quiere acompañarme,
que no se busque a sí mismo, que tome su cruz de cada día y me
siga. Pues el que quiera conservar para sí mismo su vida, la perderá; pero el que la pierda por mi causa, ése la encontrará". Comentario breve: ¿Quién es Jesucristo y qué significa seguirlo?
¿Qué es ser discípulo? El evangelio nos pone de frente a estas dos
importantes preguntas. Los tres evangelios sinópticos ofrecen
variaciones de este relato; y el evangelio de Juan incluye una
‘confesión de fe’ de los labios de Marta de Betania, antes de que
Jesús resucitara a su hermano Lázaro – también incluye una por
Pedro en respuesta a la triple-pregunta que Jesús resucitado le
hace. Así como entonces, es también hoy: a pesar de las muchas
opiniones confusas y conflictivas que la gente tiene sobre Jesús,
el cristiano es el que ha llegado a creer, a tener la certidumbre y
fe, de que Jesús es el Cristo. Sin embargo, para estar seguro de
que ni sus discípulos ni nadie malentendiera su versión de lo significa ser ‘Cristo’, Jesús les manda quedar cayados cuando le
describe su misión mesiánica como una que involucra el rechazo,
el sufrimiento, la muerte y la resurrección. No es suficiente para
los cristianos creer en Jesús; también tiene que amar a Jesús y
seguirle. Seguirle involucra ‘abnegación’ y compromiso con el
reino de Dios y el Evangelio venga lo que venga. La ‘cruz diaria’
es entonces el compromiso radical de vivir el Evangelio y de ser
agentes del amor misericordioso y salvador de Dios ‘en y para’ el
mundo. Irónicamente, los que se ‘olvidan’ de sí mismos y
‘pierden’ por amor a Dios y amor al prójimo, serán los que
‘encontraran’ y se “salvaran’; y aquellos cuyos motivos son basados en la auto-preservación y el interés propio verán que ganarán
poco o nada. Ser discípulo de Jesús implica ser como él, respondiendo a la gracia y al amor de Dios.
Today’s reading offers significant messages:
Jesus redefined the meaning of what ‘Messiah/Christ’ meant: not a
position of power, but one of becoming vulnerable in openness to
God’s inscrutable plan of saving love. Christians are those who
believe in, love and follow Jesus. Following involves self-denial for
the sake of the kingdom of God, which means salvation for the
world.
• The cross involves radical commitment to Jesus and his Gospel
come what may; a willingness to suffer all kinds of difficulties and
adversities in being agents of God’s mercy in the world. For our
shared or personal reflection: After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or feelings.
• How does what I believe about Jesus affect the way that I live?
• What does self-denial for the sake of the Gospel of the kingdom of
God mean for me?
• How do I face difficulties and adversities in being an agent of
God’s love? What does Jesus’ own suffering and cross teach me/
inspire me as a Christian disciple?
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes:
Jesús redefinió el sentido del ‘Mesías/Cristo’: no se trata de estar en
posición de poder, sino de estar disponible al plan inescrutable del
amor salvífico de Dios.
• Los cristianos son los que creen en, aman y siguen a Jesús. Seguirle
