Welcome to our celebration of the Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our students have finished their school year by now. Let us keep our them in our prayers for a safe, fun and learned summer. Let us help them use their time wisely. Parents and baby sitters, keep the young in the Bible, prayer and other spiritual meditations in their ‘day to day’ activities. It is the base and source of their relationship with Christ and the Church and their success when they reach their young adult years and beyond. Father’s Day, June 19, is next weekend. Young ones, start making your cards now to honor dad on his special day. Also next weekend, after all the Masses, there will be a Renewal of Marriage Vows. See nearby space for details. From prior weeks, most have read in these pages that Bishop Lynch has reached the mandatory age of retirement, which for bishops is age 75. Last year he blogged his reflections on the transition, known as an Episcopal Transition meaning the selection of a new Bishop. The Diocese has republished the communication and over the next weeks we, too, will republish them for you. First, from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, an excerpt from “How Bishops Are Appointed.” “The ultimate decision in appointing bishops rests with the pope, and he is free to select anyone he chooses. But how does he know whom to select? The process for selecting candidates for the episcopacy normally begins at the diocesan level and works its way through a series of consultations until it reaches Rome. It is a process bound by strict confidentiality and involves a number of important players – the most influential being the apostolic nuncio [*], the Congregation for Bishops, and the pope. It can be a time consuming process, often taking eight months or more to complete…” [*Apostolic nuncio meaning the Pope’s representative of a given nation.] Now the start of “Bishop Lynch Shares His Thoughts Regarding the Episcopal Transition” “YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW - I would like to share with you an outline of the process which will be used in selecting a new bishop for this wonderful local church we call ‘The Diocese of St. Petersburg.’ On May 27, 2016, my seventy-fifth birthday, I will forward a letter to the Holy Father asking to retire as bishop of St. Petersburg after having reached the mandatory ‘age limit’ for bishops. I can also submit it earlier than that if there is a good reason, such as my health, energy, and/or the needs of the diocese being greater than my ability to meet them. That letter is sent to the Holy Father’s representative in the United States, our Apostolic Nuncio. He forwards the letter to the Congregation of Bishops in Rome who will then decide how it is to be handled: (a) it can be accepted immediately but I will be told to remain in office until my successor is installed; (b) it can be accepted immediately but an Apostolic Administrator (another bishop of another diocese) can be appointed to administer the diocese until a successor is chosen; (c) it can be accepted immediately but the College of Consultors of the Diocese (seven pastors) can be asked to choose an Administrator who would then serve with slightly restricted powers until a successor is installed. Regardless, a long and thorough process of consultation will begin led by the Apostolic Nuncio in Washington. …” To be continued in upcoming weeks. Wishing you a blessed week filled with God, His Love and Mercy. ~ Father Paul ǁǁǁ͘ƐƚůƵŬĞĂůĚĞƌŵĂŶ͘ŽƌŐ In the Liturgy - Page 3 Renew Your Wedding Vows - next weekend A communal renewal of wedding vows can be very meaningful and touching for the couples, their family members and the Parish family and friends. As a married couple it gives you time to pause and reflect on where you have been and where you are going. It would be a wonderful example for your children and grand children, especially if they are present for the occasion. Try to bring your family and friends for the Mass you plan to attend for the Father's Day weekend. The vows will be renewed at all the weekend Masses. Please prepare for it by reflecting on it as individually and together as a couple. Let not your love wither or die. Give a chance for the your love to ripen. ST. LUKE PARISH HEALING MASS Scripture Readings for the Week Join us on First Fridays at 11am for Mass and Anointing of the Sick Prepare and Pray the Word of God Mark your calendars for the next First Fridays: July 1 August 5 September 2 October 7 November 4 December 2 Bloom Where You’re Planted Joseph was his father’s favorite child. He talked about having dreams in which his family bowed down to him. This made him so unpopular that his brothers sold him to merchants headed for Egypt. They convinced their father that a wild animal had killed him. Joseph was sold to Potiphar, an Egyptian official, who was impressed by Joseph’s intelligence and put him in charge of his household. However, when Joseph spurred the romantic advances of Mrs. Potiphar, she falsely accused him of rape and he was imprisoned. In spite of this, he bloomed again. His gift for interpreting dreams reached the king of Egypt, who was plagued by dreams he couldn’t understand. Joseph found the meaning of Pharaoh’s dreams: Egypt was going to have seven years of prosperity followed by seven years of famine. The dreams were a warning to store food to survive the famine. Pharaoh made Joseph second-in-command over Egypt and responsible for instituting a program that saved Egypt when the food shortage hit. Joseph’s brothers came to buy food. They bowed down to him, not realizing he was their brother. Joseph didn’t take vengeance on them, saying “Even though you meant harm to me, God meant it for good, to achieve his present end, the survival of many people.” Joseph may not have known what God had in store for him, but he had a sense that something bigger was at work. That’s what allowed him to bloom where he was planted, over and over again, in the least hospitable conditions imaginable.
