May 15 - The Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus of Mary

PENTECOST SUNDAY
May 15, 2016
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.
As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and
said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,
and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Pastor’s Letter
May 14/15
The Communion of Saints
Dear Parish family,
Just about everything we read is available electronically these days. From the morning news to the
latest novel, it is all readily available without actually touching a piece of paper. No surprise that it
is also possible to pray electronically. There are online, Kindle, and iPad versions of the bible. Even
the daily prayers we priests say, our breviary, is now available at eBreviary.com!
I think you all know that I am very comfortable with things technological and I have to admit I have
given some thought to using one of these electronic prayer books. But as convenient as they may be,
there is one thing an electronic prayer book will never be able to do, something I would miss very
much.
Over the years I have assembled my own prayer book which holds the readings and prayers that I use
every day. There are prayers for weddings and funerals, baptisms and blessings, and visits to
hospitals. But there is also a rich assortment of other things: pictures of my nieces and nephews and
a godchild or three, holy cards from funerals of friends and family, a note from a child I sponsor in
Central America, and so on. All these cards, notes, and pictures are part of my own life of faith; they
are reminders of people to pray for and people who I know are praying for me every day of my
life. I cannot imagine a prayer book that was not stuffed full of all these reminders.
I know that many of you do the same. I always see people praying in church with a prayer book or
bible filled with reminders of all the important connections in their spiritual lives. I guess prayer
books are a kind of spiritual refrigerator door, where all the important connections of our lives are
gathered in one sacred place.
On Pentecost, on this feast of the Holy Spirit, we are reminded of all the things that make us one and
give us the strength of community. We are many but one: many languages, cultures, ways of life,
journey of faith, but all guided by one Spirit toward the one God. We have many gifts and
ministries, many ways to love and serve, but always one and the same Christ who is all in all. It is
this that we Catholics call the communion of saints.
We all have moments when we feel alone. There are times when we think we are alone before our
God. But my stuffed prayer book reminds me that we are never alone. The strength of our faith is
always in the lives of those who we love and who love us, those who
are with us still and those who have gone to God.
Next year, at the Easter vigil, I just might bring my iPad, which would
be a whole lot easier to read in that dark church. But there is no way I
am giving up my stuffed-with-pictures prayer book.
Sincerely your in Christ,
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Reflections On the
Gospel
Pentecost Sunday, the day
we celebrate the birth of the Holy Spirit in our Church. And since we are the Church, the day we celebrate the birth of the Spirit in each of us. Happy Birthday, Church! Happy Birthday, one another! As St.
Paul points out, we have much to celebrate, for we all contribute different gifts to make the Church and
our world whole.
What better day for Pax Christi Metro New York to celebrate the gifts of seven peacemakers: Phyllis
and Orlando Rodriguez for their gift of on-going forgiveness in the face of horrific violence on 9/11/01;
Sr. Evelyn Lamoureux, DW for her gift of service to the poor and the trafficked; Fr. Francis Gargani,
CSsR for his gift of loving welcome to all; and Paul Thomas, Caroline Bandigan, and Jillian Eberlein
for their youthful gifts of time and service to the hospitalized, homeless, hungry, elderly, and the
young. This Pentecost, think about the gifts you have to share and the gifts others share with you. Then

Dear Parishioners:
Our Parish is truly blessed by our Lord and as One Faith, Family and Community we continuously answer God’s call to share our gifts to help build His kingdom. Through our prayer
and worship, our sacramental life, and ministries that serve others and bring hope and compassion, we are truly united as one.
The Catholic Ministries Appeal is another opportunity for us to join together with our entire
Long Island faith community and provide services which our parish alone could not provide.
By supporting the Appeal, we can impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across
our Island through programs that teach, heal, support, nurture and feed.
I am continually amazed by the love and support that you, our parishioners, have for our Parish. Please know that our parish will also benefit financially by your support of the Catholic
Ministries Appeal. Once we reach our goal, 20% of the funds we raise come back to the Parish to use for our own needs.
Please remember that every pledge or gift is important and will help us reach our goal, but
more importantly answer our Holy Father’s call to “show mercy to others by feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, welcoming strangers, offering instruction, and giving comfort.” Imagine
how many lives we can impact if we all participate in this mission. I ask you to prayerfully
consider being a part of our parish family effort by giving in proportion to how the Lord has
blessed you.
Thank you for the many ways you gratefully share your gifts. May God continue to bless you
and your loved ones.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Pastor

APOSTOLADO HISPANO
sacramental de su amor por la Iglesia (cf. Mt 19,1-12;
Mc 10,1-12; Ef 5,21-32).
