Dear Parishioners,
Queridos Feligreses,
Happy Easter as we celebrate the final day in the Octave of
Easter! All week long we have celebrated the mystery of the
nd
resurrection in a special way. Today on the 2 Sunday of
Easter we celebrate Mercy Sunday. This Sunday, instituted by
Pope St. John Paul II, is especially important in this Jubilee Year
of Mercy. Today we call to mind that the birth, the death, and
the Resurrection of Jesus are all ways that the Father wants to
show us his mercy and to have us experience his mercy in a
personal way.
The banners for the Jubilee of Mercy that have graced the walls
of our church remind us of this gift of the Father’s mercy
through quotes from Pope Francis. The first one proclaimed
that “No one can be excluded from God’s mercy.” All of us are
called to receive and experience the life giving mercy of God.
At the beginning of Lent we focused on “Mercy is the best thing
we can feel: it changes the world. A little mercy makes the
world less cold and more just.” Hopefully through our Lenten
practices, especially those of alms giving, we showed mercy to
others making the world and the lives of those around us less
cold and more just. In reminding us that mercy is the best thing
we can feel, it is a life giving experience to know that God and
others have been merciful to us. Mercy is such an important
gift that we need to practice in our families. Husbands and
wives have to be merciful to one another. Children, while
needing correction and guidance, also need mercy from
parents. Children also have to be merciful to their parents,
trusting that their parents are trying to do the best they can do
in their vocation, but they are not perfect. Also it is very
important that siblings show mercy to each other.
The current banner reads, “Let us be renewed by God’s mercy,
let us be loved by Jesus, let us enable the power of his love to
transform our lives too, and let us become agents of this mercy,
channels through which God can water the earth, protect all
creation and make justice and peace flourish.” It is a perfect
message for the Easter season. As nature is renewed with the
new life of spring, hopefully our lives, everyday are renewed by
a deeper experience of God’s mercy and Jesus’ love. God wants
to transform us with his mercy and love because he loves us.
But, once we are transformed we know that we cannot keep
that mercy and love for ourselves. Mercy and love move us to
share it with others. During this Easter Season may we look for
ways to be agents and channels of God’s mercy for others and
to do our part to make justice and peace flourish in our homes,
our neighborhood, and in our nation.
