March 20th, 2016 Page 2 Liturgy Corner Holy week this year begins Sunday, March 20th, with Palm Sunday. On Palm Sunday, the Church celebrates Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem to accomplish his paschal mystery. Each of the Sunday liturgies memorializes this event. Red vestments are worn and the Passion is read on this day. The Easter triduum begins with the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and closes with evening prayer on Easter Sunday; The Easter triduum of the passion and resurrection of Christ is the culmination of the entire liturgical year. Morning Prayer is celebrated each morning of the triduum. Holy Thursday (Jesus celebrates the last Supper in which he gives us his body and blood) The tabernacle is empty, sufficient bread is consecrated at this liturgy for the communion of the clergy and people for Thursday and Friday; the altar is moderately decorated with flowers in keeping with the day. The Gloria is heard for the first time since the beginning of Lent; the organ and other instruments are used moderately to support the singing assembly. The Washing of the Feet takes place at this liturgy reminding us that we are to serve one another as Jesus came to serve all people; the traditional number is 12 but there is no exact requirement the people chosen should reflect a cross section of the parish. After communion a ciborium with hosts for Good Friday is carried in procession to an altar of reposition. After the celebration, the altar is stripped in private, holy water fonts are emptied; the faithful adore the Blessed Sacrament. Good Friday (Entrusting his life to the Father, Jesus bore our infirmities and obedient unto death, won for us eternal salvation) Good Friday and Holy Saturday until the Easter Vigil the paschal fast is observed, everywhere to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus. The celebration of the Lord’s Passion begins at 3:00 PM; the intercessions and the chants before the veneration are chanted. The Passion on this day will be sung. After the celebration the altar is stripped; the cross remains with two lighted candles. Easter Vigil (The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone) This celebration takes place at night and is in four parts – Blessing of the Fire and Preparation of the Candle; Liturgy of the Word; Baptismal Liturgy and Liturgy of the Eucharist. Nine readings are assigned to the Easter Vigil. Those who receive Communion at the Vigil may also receive at another Mass on Easter Day. These days do not celebrate what once happened to Jesus, but what is now happening among us as people called to conversion, gathered in faith, and gifted with the Holy Spirit in holiness. March 20th, 2016 Worship Readings for the Week Monday, March 21st Isaiah 42: 1-7 John 12: 1-11 Tuesday, March 22nd Isaiah 49: 1-6 John 13:21-33, 36-38 Wednesday, March 23rd Isaiah 50:4-9a Matthew 26:14-25 Thursday, March 24th ~ Holy Thursday Exodus 12:1-8, 11-14 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 John 13:1-15 Friday, March 25th ~ Good Friday Isaiah 52:13—53:12 Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:7-9 John 18: 1—19:42 Saturday, March 26th ~ Holy Saturday – Easter Vigil Sunday, March 27th, 2016 EASTER SUNDAY - THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD First Reading: Acts 10:34a, 37-43 In the first reading, Peter preaches about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Second Reading: Colossians 3:1-4 or 1 Corinthians 5:6b-8 The second reading encourages believers of Christ to think of what is above, not what is on earth. Gospel Reading: John 20:1-9 In the Gospel, Mary Magdalen, Peter and the beloved disciple witness the empty tomb. Peter is confused, but the beloved disciple sees the empty tomb and believes. ****************************** Page 3 “In judging our salvation or definitive damnation, God will not be guided by cultic criteria, when and how we prayed, not by doctrinal criteria, what truths we believe in. God will be guided by ethical criteria: what we did for others. The eternal destiny of human beings will be measured by how much or little solidarity we have displayed with the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, and the oppressed. In the end we will be judged in terms of love.’ By Leonardo Boff “It is the proper function of the liturgy to ‘make’ the church preparation and to reveal her as fulfillment. Every day, every week, every year it is thus transformed and made into this double reality, into a correlation between the ‘already’ and the ‘not yet.’ We could not have prepared ourselves for the kingdom of God which is ‘yet to come,’ if the kingdom were not ‘already’ given to us. We could never have made the end the object of love, hope, and desire if it were not revealed to us as a glorious and radiant beginning. We could never have prayed ‘Thy kingdom come!’ if we did not have a taste of that kingdom already communicated to us. If the liturgy of the church would not have been ‘fulfillment,’ our life could never have become ‘preparation.’ Thus this double rhythm of preparation and fulfillment, far from being accidental, constitutes the very essence of the liturgical life of the church, the liturgy not only in its totality, but also in each of its component parts, each season, each service, each sacrament. What would Pasch be without the white quiet of the Holy and Blessed Sabbath? The solemn darkness of Good Friday without the long Lenten preparation? Yet, is not the sadness of Lent made into a ‘bright sadness’ the light which comes to it from the Pasch it prepares?” By Alexander Schmemann “Having completed the forty days that bring profit to our souls, we beseech thee in thy love for us: Grant us also to behold thy passion.” By Byzantine Vespers The SACRAMENT OF PENANCE will be celebrated on MONDAY, MARCH 21st, from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM in the church. It is also the first day of spring! In just a few days the Holy Triduum will begin (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday). Today we remember the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem. I was reading a commentary on the liturgy of Palm Sunday and it stated these thought provoking words: “ Two questions we might ponder as we process and sing ‘Hosanna’ are ‘Who is he that we celebrate?’ and ‘What does it mean to walk this path?’” “The first two readings today offer meditations on the first question. Isaiah’s famous third song of the servant of God paints such a prophetic portrait of Jesus that Page 5 it’s easy to understand why the early church used it. It explains their suffering savior. More than anything, this song is a proclamation of humble obedience and purity of heart. If we imagine Jesus reciting it, the first thing we hear is his awareness that he has comes from God for the purpose of giving new life to the poor and the weary. Next, he explains that his entire life, morning by morning, has been one of listening in order to understand and carry out God’s will. Then he freely speaks of accepting his suffering. Finally he reveals the key to his integrity and why he can accomplish what he does: ‘The Lord is my help; I shall not be put to shame.’” The reading from Philippians offers the early church’s poetic reflection on Christ as the perfect servant of God. Beginning with the assurance that he was indeed divine, it explains that that status held no sway over him. Long before he began to teach others about humility, he freely deposed himself of privilege, assuming the condition of the needy and accepting the human condition to listen and obey God; no matter what the consequences. This is the one who lived in utter transparency, whose life and death gave witness to his teaching about serving the lowly and distaining prestige. This is the Christ whom God exalted so that everyone could proclaim his as Lord and see in him the glory of God! The second question is more costly. What does it mean to walk in this path? Luke’s Passion invites us to enter the scene and find ourselves in one or more of the characters. The proclamation of the passion invites us to walk with Jesus through his last day of mortal life. Before even entering the trial, he offers us communion to strengthen us when we fail. From Sunday through Friday we are urged to walk the way of the cross with our ancestors and our contemporaries. “We take our place among them and learn from Jesus as he prays, accepts the March 20th, 2016 counterfeit sign of companionship, and heals the innocent one injured in the fray. Then through the trial, the procession to Calvary, and his final expressions of forgiveness, promise and trust, we are invited to hear which of those words he adresses to us and what difference they might make.” Because we cannot avoid meeting the suffering Christ as we walk through life, we keep the palm as a reminder that we want to honor and be faithful to him in all his lowly incarnations.” “We process today, looking forward to the fulfillment of his Easter, when sin and suffering are but memories and ‘Alleluia’ is our only song”! Have a blest Palm Sunday and Holy Week! Peace, Fr. Steve Our annual SEDER SUPPER will be held on MONDAY, MARCH 21st. We will begin at 6:30 PM. The Seder Supper will be held in the PARISH CENTER. The DEVINE MERCY SUNDAY will be celebrated on SUNDAY, APRIL 3rd. St. Peter of Alcantara Parish welcomes all to the celebration of DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY. The afternoon of prayer will begin at 1:00 PM. Holy Land Collection GOOD FRIDAY ~ March 25th, 2016 Each day, the news reminds us of the violence and instability plaguing the Middle East, but we rarely hear of the shrinking Christian community there, a community that struggles to remain in the land of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection. Please help support our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land by giving to the Good Friday Collection. This Pontifical Collection allows the Franciscans and others to continue caring for Christianity’s holiest sites and for God’s people in the Holy Land. Please be as generous as possible. Outreach Parish Social Ministry FOOD PANTRY – Thank you to all those who have donated to Our Lady of Fatima Food Pantry. ***Please remember to check the expiration dates on all your donated items.*** Toiletries are always welcome! March 20th, 2016 Thank you to Boy Scouts Troop 7 for stocking Our Lady of Fatima’s Food Pantry. Page 7 He reorganizes the storage area for the cards and card supplies, lifting boxes and stocking our shelves. His work saves us time and energy which we use to focus on making our cards and praying for our sick and homebound. We welcome them into the CaringHands Ministry and thank them for their valuable time and dedication as they assist us and become a wonderful addition to this ministry. GOD KNOWS WHAT WE NEED AND HAS PROVIDED FOR US. He has blessed this ministry with all of you who continue to pray for our sick and homebound, our Prayer Chain and CaringHands Card ministries. Palm Sunday draws us into Holy Week. Plan to participate in the holiest liturgies of the year and take the sick and homebound who can’t be with us with you. CaringHands Ministries hold you in our prayers. Living Stewardship CaringHands Corner CaringHands Bits and Pieces We are blessed to have two new members of our CaringHands Ministry Team join us and will take on some of the work load. Since we are growing and we attend to so many people we felt the need to have a little extra help so after I received phone calls from two people who asked if there was something they could do to help, I didn’t think twice about accepting their offer. A young woman named Jessica, from our parish, who has a baby girl, will become our liaison person between the rectory and the Wednesday weekly CaringHands Card ministry group. She will pick up the cards and envelopes that you so faithfully leave for our use and any other mail that pertains to us from the rectory office. It will save us time and assist the office staff in keeping us stocked and informed. Our second helper is a thirteen year boy, Kevin, who has volunteered his services to our ministry. After several card donations, Kevin sorts the cards and envelopes, groups them by size and occasion and indexes them into their proper boxes. We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, leading them to a deeper understanding of God’s mercy and a new sense of meaning and purpose in their lives. ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS Meet for a closed step meeting each Sunday at 7:00 PM in the Parish Center. Welcome to Life… Faith Formation The READING GROUP will not meet in MARCH.
