That’s exactly what the people asked Jesus in this Sunday’s gospel. Jesus, emphatically rejects this way of thinking. Jesus says, “By no means!” (Lk 13.3) yet he warns, “But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will perish…” Misfortunes serve as reminders and warning of the limitations and fragility of life, hence the invitation of the Lord to be converted and bear fruits of good life through the allotted time God has given us. We should not come to the end of our lives with empty hands. In other words the Lord warns us against complacency both in the practical and spiritual sense. The Lord does not surely want us to be spiritually stagnant, to be complacent, to do nothing in the practice of our faith. He wants us to bear fruit of goodness just as a farmer looks for fruit in his vineyard. God is always giving us another chance to bear fruit, like the parable of the fig tree which is given a chance to bear fruit again in another year. God is more than generous with the opportunities to reform our lives. Every Lent for example is one season God is giving us as one of those opportunities to produce spiritual fruits. Rather than questioning God or judging others, focus instead, says Jesus, on what we can control and should be doing: deepening or restoring our own relationship with God. In the mind of the Lord, tragedies in life are not simply those accidents or bad things that happen beyond our control but those things that happen within our control. For the Lord there is greater tragedy in doing nothing to progress in spiritual life and in the practice of faith. Indeed there is tragedy in our unwillingness to change for the better, to accept the challenge to work out difficulties and overcome them; or to accept suffering and transform it to be the source of strength. Especially during the Lenten springtime of this Jubilee Year of mercy, the Master Gardener’s mercy, like in the gospel parable, patiently cultivates even trees that seem barren, like the world or the Church or our personal life. Jesus mercifully give us more time for us to bring fresh fruit that shows forth God’s mercy. This Wednesday, March 2, we have the opportunity. It’s our community Penance Service. Do come and be renewed in spirit, be cleansed of the past sins and celebrate the feast of the Mercy of God, and share God’s mercy to others that all of us will bear fruit of goodness in the world we live. So be it. Blessings to all and have a good week! Querida familia parroquial, Fr. Padre Tony ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH ~ LA PORTE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT Activities of the Week Sun. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH ~ LA PORTE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT FEBRUARY 28, 2016 Join Us… St. Mary’s Music Ministry Garland of Mercy... In this Jubilee Year, we are asked to open our eyes and hearts to see how God is working in our lives and to more actively spread His mercy out to others. We are creating a Garland of Mercy with our teen group to bear witness to our efforts to help others. For the entire year, we are asking each week when you do works of mercy, to write down one or more works on the strips of paper in the ends of the pews. Please put them into the collection basket so that we offer up, not just our treasure to the Lord, but our time and talent in a visible way. Red Strips are for The Corporal Works of Mercy: feeding the hungry, clothing the needy, visiting the sick or imprisoned. White Strips are for The Spiritual Works of Mercy: Counseling the doubtful, bearing wrongs patiently, forgiving offences willingly and praying for the living and the dead. Gold Ones are for the acts of mercy which we received from others. I know that all of you are part of spreading God’s mercy out into the world. Please take the time to become more conscious of it and take credit for it here before the Lord. NPMC Planning Mtg. Feb.29 St. Mary’s Hall @ 6:30pm Bible Study Classes Sunday Morning Bible Study with Deacon Stan & Tracy Avallone will follow the CCE schedule. Classes this weekend. The program they use is called “Bringing Faith Home” (Scheduled @ 8:45am & 11:15am every Sunday). “I AM” “A Biblical Walk Through the Mass” Kindness and mercy are what the enslaved people of Israel needed, and they came in the form of deliverance. They came through a leader, Moses, who was once plucked from the Nile River and was now herding his father-in-law’s sheep in the land of Goshen. The bush that burned but was not consumed shows us that God is inexhaustible mystery. Moses’ awe and deference are mixed with a touching conversational tone as he seeks to learn God’s name. And God sweetly responds. The somewhat abstract “I AM” distinguishes the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob from the minor gods in the territory who “are not.” They are helpless, powerless, and useless. Moses is to step out into an amazing future, and God will be there with outstretched arm. Just go and see, God seems to say. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Sun. 5:15pm & Wed. 9:00am In this sturdy, we will walk through the main parts of the Mass—from the opening Sign of the Cross to the concluding “Thanks be to God” - and consider then in light of their scriptural background. Along the way, we will discover many beautiful spiritual treasures. For the prayers and rituals of the Mass, when understood biblically, offer much inspiration, encouragement, and practical help for our lives as Christians/ As we will see, the prayers of the Mass challenge us to examine our consciences, repent of our sins, and experience God’s loving mercy. They also remind us of God’s presence with us amid our fears, trials, and sufferings. They can inspire us to live marriages, family lives, and friendships with greater love and summon us to entrust more of our lives to Jesus. Most of all, this study will help us encounter Our Lord more deeply in the liturgy itself. By understanding the meaning of what we say and do in the Mass, we will be better prepared to give ourselves to Jesus in every prayer and gesture in the liturgy.
