• Esperanza’s name means hope. To her, it
means it’s too long, it’s sad, it’s waiting,
it’s like the number 9 or the color of mud.
• It was her great-grandmother’s name. She
was a wild horse woman who ended up
marrying her great-grandfather and
sitting by the window her whole life.
• Esperanza wants to be free, not sitting by
the window.

stop noticing when they get into trouble.
• Three kids are Angel, Refugia, & Efren

do have these things.
• Darius doesn’t like school. He is stupid
but says something wise today.

different forms, like pillows or popcorn.
• Darius says that God made the clouds and
that he made them simply.

snow. There are 10 names for clouds.
• People can have multiple names.
• Rachel and Lucy get mad at Esperanza
and begin to call her names and insult
both her and her mother.
• Nenny can’t talk to Rachel & Lucy if she
wants to be Esperanza’s sister.
