JUNE
In June, the Holy Father asks us to
pray that immigrants and refugees
may find welcome and respect in
the countries to which they come
and that the personal encounter
with Jesus may arouse in many
young people the desire to offer
their own lives in priesthood or
consecrated life.

The Ignatian Corner!
IGNATIAN APOSTOLIC COMMUNITIES – 8
Our Christian use of the word “Apostolic” refers back to the Risen Christ’s “sending” of his disciples
to proclaim the Good News of the resurrection to all nations. In each appearance, Jesus consoles His disciples
in the midst of their desolation, then he “sends” or “missions” them to carry on the work which he inaugurated.
When Saul/Paul was bolted from his horse as the risen Christ appeared to him on the Road to Damascus, his
second question to Jesus was: Lord, what shall I do? (Acts 22:10). Each of us must ask the same question in
order to know what God dreams for us. Then we need to respond in the affirmative, as Mary did (Lk. 1:38).
How do we become apostolic today? We are already apostolic. That happens in our baptism. In that
sacrament, our ears were touched so that we might hear the Word of God, and our mouths were touched so that
we might proclaim what we heard.
But what does our apostolic work look like? That would be our response to God’s call. God’s call is a
vocation. The vocations within the church are priesthood, religious life, married life, and the single state. In
addition, God also calls each one to serve others in love. One’s apostolic call from God may be personal (i.e.
what a person does in everyday life), communal (i.e. together with a group), corporate (e.g. the group
structures how it works together), institutional (e.g. a school, a parish, hospital, a soup kitchen), or national
and/or international (especially by advocacy groups or by membership in an agency). Each person discerns
how God is calling him or her to be an apostle. When a group of persons does this, they are doing a communal
discernment.
I shall try to illustrate these various apostolic choices:
Personal: I notice a youngster who is str uggling with studies. After pr ayer , I choose to tutor that
youngster so that he or she can do better in school.
Communal: A gr oup of us notice that sever al youngster ar e str uggling with their studies. After pr ayer ,
we choose to tutor that gr oup of youngster s.
Corporate: I set up a pr ogr am to tr ain older students to be tutor s for youngster s. I show them how they
can assist one to three persons. In this way 60 to 100 youngsters can be helped with their studies. I do not do
any tutoring. I supervise the tutoring. I go around to each small group and ask if there are any difficulties or
questions. As I assist the tutors, they become skilled in the process. The youngsters feel a great desire to
continue coming to the program; they can relate to the tutors who are closer to them in age; more importantly,
they notice how the tutors themselves are learning the process; and if the tutors can learn, then they recognize
that they can learn too. Learning is not a task but a joy.
Institutional: I establish a Cr isto Rey school. This is a Catholic high school in the inner city for students
from low-income families. They must commit themselves to study top-rate academic courses and must commit
themselves to work 20 hours per week for an agency. This agency trains them for the work and pays the school
for their work; this payment equals their tuition. These schools were started by Fr. John P. Foley, S.J. in
Chicago in 1995. At present there are 28 schools, 17 run by the Society of Jesus, and the others by other
religious congregations or by dioceses. The graduates have been admitted to the best universities. They have
also begun to have an effect in their neighborhoods and in their workplace.
Locally, our parishioners do this with the Pregnancy Center, the Christian Mission, the Mooresville
Soup Kitchen, the Fifth Street Ministries in Statesville, Habitat for Humanity, and our own Church ministries.
National/International/Structural: This is work that I would do in cooper ation with other s to br ing
humanitarian relief to peoples in need or to reform structures so that they be more just and more concerned for
the common good. This can be done by ADVOCACY, i.e. contacting congresspersons to express my concerns
on a particular issue. This can also be done by membership and contributions to an agency which does this
work, for example: Catholic Relief Services, Doctors Without Borders, Network, Pax Christi, Bread for the
World, Food for the Poor, FINCA, Oxfam, Human Rights Watch, Southern Poverty Law Center, Amnesty
International, Ignatian Solidarity Network, etc.

HELP NEEDED:
We are looking for people willing to help with Children's Liturgy of the
Word on Sunday mornings during 10:30am Mass. During Children’s Liturgy
of the Word children are dismissed from the assembly to hear the Gospel at a
level of understanding for them. They talk about it’s meaning for their lives,
and enter into prayer with the other children gathered.
Over the last several years this program has grown and now we need some
assistance. Please consider joining this wonderful ministry. If you are
interested, please contact the Faith Formation Office at 704-664-7762.

RCIA/RCIC YEAR END
2014-15 REPORT
The RCIA Team and I wish to thank
everyone who have assisted and prayed so
diligently for our 2014-15 RCIA Journey.
We wish a special thanks to the parish staff, Faith Formation,
clergy, parish council and the Knights of Columbus for their
wonderful support that made the team’s burden lighter. The
Holy Spirit listened and was extremely gracious and generous
to St. Therese. The following numbers were submitted to the
Diocese to be included in the material that Bishop Jugis will
take with him to his next Ad Lumina with Pope Francis:
We had 19 Elect Baptized, 8 Non Catholics Received into the
Church, 60 First Eucharist, and 52 Confirmations.
The RCIA Team consisted of 32 people; we had an additional
13 instructors; there were 80 parish guides, sponsors or
godparents. A total of 195 people were directly involved with
the program—BEST EVER.
The program increased by 15% from 2013-14 in total
participants and we doubled the number of elect that were
Baptized. In the last three years , RCIA has grown over 40%.
In that same period, the parish grew 20%. We can easily say
the charisma of Evangelization is alive and well at St. Therese!

Feast Day of Saints Peter and Paul
Summer Reading List
This Friday is the combined Feast Day of Saint Peter
and Saint Paul. Peter was the ‘chief’ apostle and was
from Galilee just as Jesus was. He was considered
the apostle to the Jewish people. Paul, on the other
hand never knew
Jesus and persecuted
his followers after his
death. Paul met the
risen Lord while on
his way to persecute
more Christians and
his life changed
forever. Paul brought
the Christian doctrine
to the Gentiles. Both
were imprisoned and
put to death in Rome
By Emperor Nero.
Peter was hung
upside-down on a
cross (so not to die as
Jesus did) and Paul
was beheaded.
Do you have plans to read a really good book this
summer? How about the original Good Book?
The Bible! Yes, the whole thing. There are fewer
words in the New Testament than any one of the
later Harry Potter books. The Bible has romance,
murder, war, intrigue, and all of the other ‘hooks’
of today’s top sellers. You do realize the Bible is
the top selling book of all time. There are many
on-line guides including this one: http://
www.beginningcatholic.com/catholic-biblestudy.html, to help you get through the most
influential book of all time. Happy reading!
Faith Formation registration for
the 2015/16 school year is
ongoing. Students in weekly
classes were given preprinted
family registration forms in class.
Families that participated in
home schooling or last year’s
Summer FF, need to come to the
office to get their forms. Blank
forms are available at http://
sainttherese.net/faith-formationregistration. Do not wait too long
to register because popular
classes will fill up fast.
