Midnight Musings / Pensamientos de Media Noche Tempted in Our Strengths Always on the First Sunday of Lent we hear about the temptations of Jesus after his Baptism by John and before he began his ministry of preaching and healing. These temptation stories show how human he was, like us in all things but sin. We might associate temptations with our weaknesses, but part of the story shows how we can be tempted in our strengths– and that may be more dangerous. It depends on how we look at things. For example, I have certain abilities. I can look at them as my talents or God’s gifts to me. Big difference! Am I or God the center of my life? Paul explains in I Corinthians 12:4,7: “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit… To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” God’s gifts to me are not just for me and my convenience but to serve others. Note how Jesus handled the temptation to turn stone into bread in Luke 4:3-5. Jesus had many powers; he performed countless miracles for other people. He did not want to use his powers for self serving purposes but to serve others. He refused to turn stone into bread for his own benefit, but he did not hesitate to multiply the bread and the fish to serve others. He used his gifts to love others, not to love and care for self. Same thing can happen to us; we may use our gifts for very self-seeking reasons. Look at a couple of frightening examples from Romans 12: 6: “Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us exercise them.” Romans 12:7: “if ministry, in ministering.” You can use the gift of ministry to become a successful professional. How many times have we seen ministers of religion make a fortune for themselves, serving themselves rather than others. Some have used their power to sexually exploit people who trusted them; we find this in many different religions. Romans 12:8a: “if one exhorts, in exhortation.” You may be very good with your words, very persuasive in your speech. You could exhort people to greater faith and goodness. You might also be a master manipulator. You use your gift for words for your own benefit. You persuade people to do what benefits you. You twist real communication even with family and friends to self-seeking purposes. Romans 12:8c: “if one is over others, be conscientious.” How many leaders in government and business have used their power not to serve others but themselves! The examples could go on and on. A handsome man or beautiful woman may always face the challenge not to use their attractiveness for their own sexual satisfaction. An intelligent person in business may face the challenge not to cheat and steal and get away with it. I use a gift of God to sin– tempted in my strengths, the most dangerous temptation of all.
