Fourth Sunday of Advent
End-of-the-Year Opportunities for Generosity
Jubilee Year of Mercy
As the calendar year 2015 comes to a close, the following opportuni es might be of
interest to parishioners by making a designated dona on specifically for these parish
needs:
 Contribute toward the purchase of headset microphones for bilingual presenta ons
 Designated dona on to pay down the parish loan for the Family and Youth Center
In proclaiming the Jubilee Year of Mercy,
Pope Francis proclaimed his desire that
this Holy Year be “steeped in mercy,” as
we disciples “go out to every man and
woman,” bringing the “balm of mercy” to
“believers and those far away, as a sign
that the Kingdom of God is already
present in our midst!” (Misericordiae
Vultus, 5). In her visita on of Elizabeth,
Mary beau fully presents just such an
image. Despite the perils of her
pregnancy, not to men on her
preoccupa ons as a young unwed
mother, Mary instantly, unselfishly, “goes
out” of herself, hastening far and over
dangerous terrain, to “bring the balm of
God’s tender mercy” in assistance
rendered to her older rela ve. Since
bap sm and the Eucharist have made us,
in a way, bearers of the living Christ
within as Mary was, such selfless “going
out” of ourselves to be of loving service to
others in mercy should especially mark
our Christmas season this Jubilee Year.

Show Your St. Norbert Hospitality this
Christmas!
As we begin our Christmas season, it’s a perfect me for us to
show visitors and guests how welcoming we are as a Catholic
community. Please keep in mind some of the following
sugges ons as you celebrate with your family, rela ves from other
ci es, or friends. All are welcome and we hope everyone enjoys
the hospitality of our St. Norbert family!
Remember:
 Scoot to the middle of the pew to allow late comers to sit
perhaps on the end where you were. We can’t save seats
when we have full Masses and we want to welcome everyone
who joins us.
 Christmas Eve Masses are very full and traffic is part of that
picture. Drive with extra cau on and be alert for young
children stepping out between cars.
 Try to get to Mass just a li le earlier than normal to avoid
being late and have enough me to enjoy the peace of the
season.
 Lock your car and don't leave any valuables inside, especially if
visible.
 During Mass, take that one extra moment to wish someone a
“welcome” or “Merry Christmas” to brighten their Christmas
season.
We are a proud and happy parish – please show everyone you
meet that we are truly a family of faith! Make it a very Merry
Christmas for all.
Congratulations!

What was happening in the Fourth
Century?
Constan nople was not the only significant place for church
history in the 4th century. Much farther to the west, in Milan, St.
Ambrose was also struggling against the Arians. Ambrose is
among the four earliest La n (Western) theologians to receive the
honorific tle of Doctor of the Church, along with Jerome,
Augus ne and Gregory the Great.
Although Ambrose rose to great pres ge among the clergy, it was
never his inten on to become a priest. He was born in 340 AD to a
pious Chris an family in Trier and was well educated in law and
rhetoric with the inten on of following his father’s poli cal career
in the Roman Empire. So esteemed was Ambrose’s abili es, that
in 372 he was selected to be consular prefect or “governor” of
Liguria and Emilia with his headquarters in Milan, which was a
second capital, a er Rome, and housed many important
government officials. Ambrose was a very popular ruler among
the people, and a welcomed person at the court of Emperor
Valen nian.
In 374, the Arian Bishop of Milan died leading to a struggle between
Arian and Catholic Christians for this important bishopric. Disputes
of this nature tended to become violent in the fourth century, and in
order to prevent a riot, Ambrose, as governor, rushed to the
Cathedral to keep the peace. At his appearance, both Catholic and
Arian Christians began to call for him to be bishop chanting together
“Ambrose for Bishop, Ambrose for Bishop.” Not only was Ambrose
not yet a priest, Ambrose was not yet even baptized. Although he
had been born in a Christian family and instructed in Christian
doctrine, like most people he was not baptized as an infant, and also
like most, had delayed his baptism as an adult. To complicate things
further, Canon Law of the time required that a person be baptized at
least three years prior to becoming a priest. However, the people
were insistent. In those days, it was the people of the diocese who
elected their bishop, appointment solely by the Pope would not
evolve until centuries later. Ambrose was a good choice because he
was known to be a just and compassionate governor, and was highly
regarded by both Arian and Catholic Christians. Possibly, Ambrose
could be the person to bring peace to this schism in the Church.
Ambrose did not want to be Bishop, and ran away from the city to
hide at a friend’s home. He expected Caesar Gra an, to whom he
reported as consular prefect, to object to his officer going into
ecclesias cal orders; but instead Gra an wrote a le er praising
the wisdom of choosing such an upright and holy man. Ambrose
expected that the Bishops of Rome and Constan nople also would
object to his ordina on because of the canonical restric on, but
they also affirmed the decision.
Upon hearing of the opinion of the co-emperor and the other
bishops, Ambrose’s friend surrendered him to the Church, and within
one week Ambrose was baptized, ordained a priest and consecrated
as Bishop of Milan, a reluctant steward indeed. But, once in the role
of Bishop, Ambrose took it as seriously as he had his civic service. He
adopted a very aesthetic lifestyle, and devoted himself to preaching
and to the care of his flock. Ambrose was a gifted preacher, and
people came from many other cities to hear him.
Besides his great talent in preaching, and his service to the poor in
his diocese, Ambrose had a strong interest in music. Ambrose
developed an phonal chant, in which the congrega on would sing
alternate verses of a psalm from opposite sides of the church,
rather than just a short response to the choirs singing. He also
composed many beau ful hymns, based on the psalms and other
scripture, but wri en in his own words. Ambrose’s style of music
remained popular in the church un l the development of
Gregorian Chant.
And, so, the history of the Church con nues . . .

pariente. Ya que el Bau smo y la Eucaris a
nos han hecho, de alguna manera,
portadores de un Cristo Vivo dentro de
nosotros, así como María fue, esa
generosidad de “salir” de nosotros mismos
para ofrecer un servicio atento de
misericordia a nuestros prójimos, debe
marcar especialmente nuestro Tiempo de
Navidad este Año Jubilar.
