When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, ‘Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.’ So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat.” John 6: 11-13 Certainly the Apostles had witnessed previous incredible acts by the Lord, but yet they still hesitated to trust Him implicitly. How often do we do the same? Do we remember the many blessings we have received, and do we think of all the ways God has been with us in the past, or do we, like Philip and Andrew, doubt? Stewardship involves complete trust in God. This trust should be based as much on what has happened in our lives, as on our deep faith. Good stewards concentrate on the positive, not on the negative. The program explores in greater depth and knowledge the basics of our faith. All the sessions focus on the ministry that we are called to in and through our baptism. Communication skills, group development, leadership skills, bible study, church history, prayer and sacraments are some of the many areas explored and examined in depth. Adult methods of learning and reflection are employed throughout. The sessions are scheduled on Tuesday evenings, from 7 -9:30 PM, beginning in late August and ending in late May. This is a 9-month commitment to deepen one’s skills and knowledge so as to become a more effective and engaging minister. We hope to work collaboratively with our neighboring parishes, inviting them to be part of this mutual learning process. For a brochure or more information, please call or e-mail either Kris or Biagio at: Biagio Mazza 816-979-3153 [email protected] Kris Larkey 816-979-3151; [email protected] HOW LIVING STONES CHANGED MY LIFE Three YEARS, NINE MONTHS A YEAR, and lots of reading and HOMEWORK on top of that. That’s probably all some of our Church community heard about “Living Stones” especially from me. But truthfully it’s so much more than that. For myself it turned into a loving life journey with God, our Father, his Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit. It has deepened my Catholic faith, my personal relationships, my community relationships and my acquaintances. We studied the Scriptures, early church, sacraments, prayer and a very important “Loving our Neighbor”. These are just a few of the topics we covered. There was so much more and the wonderful, warm, heartfelt discussions. Priceless! The wonderful friendships and bonds we formed with our group members - we became like family. You start in September and before you know it, it’s three years later. And you wonder where the time went. If you are wondering what Living Stones really is, just take a good look. Some of you are already in a ministry. But you don’t know what this program can do for you, or feel like you don’t have time or are too old for this. Yet we never know what God still has in store for us to do to spread His Word and continue His ministry here on earth. I’m very proud to have been a part of the “Living Stones” program. It has shown God’s love for me and that he is very present in my daily life. Give it some serious thought. Pray about it and God bless us all in this wonderful St. Sabina Parish community. Page 4 PUPUSA SALE - AUGUST 23 On Sunday, August 23 our Salvadoran community will be selling pupusas after Masses. A pupusa is a traditional Salvadoran dish made of a thick, handmade corn tortilla that is usually filled with variations of cheese, pork, and refried beans. There will be samples to try so you can purchase your favorite variety. The cost will be $2 each and you can purchase them to go. All funds collected will be used for our annual celebration in honor of Blessed Oscar Romero. 2016 DELEGATION TO EL SALVADOR Our parish will be taking its second delegation to El Salvador to learn more about the scholarship program there and to have the opportunity to meet and visit with our scholarship students and their families. We will travel to Cinquera and also to El Mozote. El Mozote was the sight of one of many massacres that occurred in El Salvador during their Civil War. As of now we are planning to travel to El Salvador on January 5 and staying approximately 8 days. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Kris at 816-979-3151 or by email at [email protected]. ADULT FAITH FORMATION REFLECTION ON THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME , YEAR B It is the Lord who feeds us and answers all our needs. This demands trust in a loving God who can do wonders with the little we have. Do we really believe this? If we do, how do we conduct our lives and Vatican II’s revision of the Lectionary developed a relationships in accordance with that belief? three-year structure with each year containing a The letter to the Ephesians urges us to “live in a semi-continuous proclamation of the gospels manner worthy of the call you have received.” according to Matthew, Mark and Luke. No Lectionary What are the characteristics of such a life? It is life year is devoted to John’s gospel, since John is so lived with humility, gentleness, with patience and prominently proclaimed in the Lent/Easter season kindness, bearing with one another, striving for peace and is more difficult to break up into short passages and unity while respecting differences. This manner for proclamation. of living is the necessary precondition for building Nowhere during these Sundays was John’s community and for caring for one another. From the Seventeenth to the Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B, the semi-continuous reading of Mark is interrupted with the proclamation of John chapter 6, the “Bread of Life” discourse. Why does the Lectionary insert such a major interruption into a year devoted to the gospel according to Mark? powerful chapter 6, the discourse on the bread of life, ever proclaimed. This was a significant lack in a Lectionary aimed at emphasizing Eucharistic celebration and reflection on the Eucharistic mystery. The revision committee decided to insert John’s discourse for five consecutive Sundays instead of Mark’s account of the feeding of five thousand. Rather than Mark’s brief narrative, John’s longer and more elaborate account was inserted. The focus of this Sunday’s readings, as well as that of the whole chapter is summed up well in the refrain from responsorial Psalm 145: “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.” The first reading from 2 Kings has the prophet Elisha multiply bread so that all can have their fill along with leftovers. This account provides a backdrop for Jesus’ multiplication of resources so that all can eat. John’s account of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes has Jesus, and not his disciples, directly feeding the crowd of five thousand with a mere five loaves and two fish. John’s message stresses that God, in the person of Jesus, is attuned to our needs and desires to meet those needs. SCC God has given us more than enough to sustain the entire human family. It is we who need to use what we have been given in a way that benefits the entire human family and not just a few members. On our own, we find this difficult to do. It is necessary for all of us to take on the mind and heart of Jesus, reaching out in care and concern for all, no matter how overwhelming the odds or how scarce the resources. Doing so will not only result in all having their various hungers met, but there will be more than enough left over. Again, do we really believe this? If so, how do we conduct our lives and relationships in accordance with that belief? As we proclaim and reflect on John’s “bread of life” discourse these next five Sundays, think of the many ways in which God has nourished and sustained you. Reflect on how you can be a source of nourishment for others who hunger and thirst, not only for food but for justice and righteousness. Commit yourself to feed others the way God has fed you. SABINA RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS – 2015-2016 The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the RCIA, is a process which welcomes all who are interested in becoming Catholic, or any Catholic wishing to deepen their understanding of the faith. The Rite involves the formation of a community that learns, shares, builds community and prays together to deepen their relationship to God and to the parish family. During the next few weeks, we will be asking if you are aware of anyone who would benefit from participation in this faith learning process. Below are some of the values that we hold as Catholic Christians, which we readily share with all who desire to journey with us through the RCIA. WHY BE CATHOLIC? The Catholic Church has consistently believed that God has a universal will and desire to save all people. Our God is the God of all people. God has initiated this love relationship with all creation and desires to bring all to fullness through total union with God for all eternity. Each one is called to union with God through the faith path and tradition that they feel God is leading them. If this is so, then why be Catholic? One is Catholic, not because it is the only way to God, but because one feels attracted to the things that the Catholic tradition offers. One feels at home more in the Catholic tradition than in other faith traditions. The following list is meant to highlight some of those aspects of the Catholic tradition that have attracted others to it. Catholics are not the only ones that value these qualities. Nor have we been consistent in following through on them. But, no matter the history, we seem to have held onto these values rather consistently. See if these are values and attractions for you. 1. We affirm a belief in the goodness of all creation. 2. We have a universal sense of openness to all people and all cultures. 3. We affirm that we are all called to holiness. 4. We are committed to continual growth as persons. 5. We are challenged to change the world and society into the reign of God. 6. We are called to live in community. 7. We have historical roots and identity. 8. We respect reason, human knowledge and human exploration. If you or anyone you know would be attracted to these values, please share this with them. Please fill out the contact information sheet located in the gathering space and we will personally contact and invite all those interested to our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Meal which will be held on Thursday, August 27th, 2015 at 6:00pm. For more information: Contact Biagio Mazza at 816331-4713 or by e-mail: [email protected] AREA INFORMATION DACA RENEWALS Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) must be renewed every two years. High fructose corn syrup is probably the most prevalent, but also beware of brown rice syrup, invert sugar, cane juice, evaporated cane juice, fruit juice concentrate, and anything ending in “ose,” which includes fructose, lactose, glucose, maltose, and sucrose. Manufacturers frequently use a combination of these so they can hide the actual amount of sugar in any product. By law, ingredients have to be listed in order of weight, so by using just a little of five different sugars, sugar won’t necessarily be the first ingredient on the label, even though the product may have more sugar in it than any other ingredient! Viajaremos a Cinquera y a El Mozote.
