We begin Year “C” for our Sunday readings. It may seem strange to begin a new year with readings dealing with the end of the world. Advent celebrates Christ’s three-fold “coming” — in history, in our current time and in the future to pull it all together. We are very familiar with Jesus’ coming in history. Most of our world knows that Christmas is coming and even non-believers on some level understand the meaning of the season. Less understood is the coming of Jesus in our daily lives. We tend to treat this aspect of his coming as a more or less private moment that may affect our life but it is not usually more our public lives. His final coming at the end of time may be too far off to be taken seriously. We think we will have years of life into the future and I can put things off until later. His final coming could come while you are reading this. Most likely not, but while we plan for the future it behooves us to be ready at any time. The earth may not be coming to an end, but my personal time here could in fact be very short. The first Sunday of Advent’s Gospel focuses on this “third” coming of Christ to help us grasp God’s providence that will bring all things under the Kingship of Jesus. While that may be a comforting idea, it is not an idea without frightening aspects. These alarming scenes are one of the ways God shows his mercy towards us. He does not pretend that everything will go our way or pleasantly, but realistically as a fallen world operates. The readings today begin with a promise that our Father will bring forth justice for his people. St. Paul prays for us that our hearts be strengthened for holiness that the day of the Lord’s coming can be anticipated with the joy of grace. ************************* In days gone by, parishioners would bring their offerings to Sunday Mass and brought them up individually to the altar. As congregations got bigger and economies grew over time, ushers would pass a basket for the gifts. This year, for one Sunday, we are resurrecting this older custom on the third Sunday of Advent, December 12 and 13. Our 75th Anniversary Team has planned the final event of this celebratory year, a special Gift Giving Weekend. SVdP reaches out to those less fortunate each Advent with the Giving Tree in cooperation with Guadalupe House. In addition to the tree, we have two other ways to share Christmas joy in cooperation with Catholic Charities and our Guayaquil Mission in Ecuador. =Guadalupe house — Obtain a tag from the Giving Tree and return the wrapped gift with the tag firmly attached to the outside of the package. =Catholic Charities — Bring unwrapped new toys for children, age’s newborn to 16. =Guayaquil Mission in Ecuador — Bring unwrapped new dress clothing (summer weight) for girls or boys sizes newborn to 10. On the Giving weekend of December 12 and 13, every parishioner will be asked to come to the front of the church with your financial gift and your present for those less fortunate. We will place all these gifts in the sanctuary throughout the weekend. This becomes a beautiful illustration of our parish’s generosity. After 5:00 pm Mass on Sunday the gifts are separated and prepared for distribution to the particular groups. After every Mass, all can celebrate with cookies and warm wassail. It will be an amazing weekend. Lecturas de hoy: Jeremías 33:14–16; Salmo 25:4–5, 8–10, 14; 1 Tesalonicenses 3:12 — 4:2; Lucas 21:25–28, 34–36 Copyright © 2006, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
