Proceeds from the sale of these items will go towards support of Catholic families there who are experiencing political strife. Due to the violence and discrimination towards Christians in the Holy Land, most of the families have left their country for different parts of the world; Christians are now less than 1.2 percent of the population. Please support these families through your purchases. Catholic University of America, funding academic scholarships. Special envelopes are in the pews. Small Groups are where our great big church becomes a great small church. It’s the place to go to grow, to be known, loved, and cared for. In Small Groups members discuss what God’s Word says on a topic and approach it through the issues and experiences of their daily lives. People are challenged to be authentic and accountable about what’s really going on in their lives in a safe and supportive place. At OLG Small Groups, we share life, build relationships and pray together. Join us. Contact: Nick Rawe [email protected] or Dave da Rosa (714) 788-8648. The Book of the Names of the Dead During the month of November, we especially remember in prayer the deceased members of our families and of our parish community. A book in which parishioners write the names of their deceased is in place near the baptismal font. Take a few moments to write in the names of your loved ones who have died. These books are kept over the years. If you wrote names in the book last year (or previous years), you need only add the names of those who have passed away since then. Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Reflections from the Gloria Dei Choir In observance of the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, the Gloria Dei offers two anthems that celebrate Christ the King. Jane Marshall wrote her very first choral anthem “My Eternal King” as a 26 year-old homemaker and volunteer alto in the choir at Dallas’ Highland Park Methodist Church. Retired but still going strong at 90 years young, Jane continues to teach sacred music at her alma mater, Southern Methodist University. The text is a translation of a 17th Century Latin poem by Rev. Edward Caswall, an Anglican clergyman and hymn writer who converted to Roman Catholicism. He is best known today for his translations of the Roman Breviary into English as well as for his hymn texts. My God, I love Thee; not because I hope for heav’n thereby, Nor yet because who love Thee not / Must die eternally. Thou, O my Jesus, Thou didst me Upon the cross embrace; For me didst bear the nails, the nails and spear, And manifold disgrace. Why, then why, O blessed Jesus Christ, Should I not love Thee well? Not for the hope of winning heav’n, / Or of escaping hell; Not with the hope of gaining aught, Not seeking a reward; But as Thyself hast loved me, / O ever-loving Lord! E’en so I love Thee, and will love, And in Thy praise will sing; Solely because Thou art my God / And my Eternal King. During communion, the choir sings Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Antiphon,” the last of his Five Mystical Songs for baritone soloist, chorus, and orchestra or organ. The text is by the Anglican priest and metaphysical poet George Herbert (1593-1633), who wrote devotional poetry in English, Latin, and Greek. The reduction of the orchestra parts for organ requires virtuosic playing and is a splendid showpiece for our gifted organist Charles Welling. Let all the world in ev'ry corner sing: My God and King. The heavens are not too high, / His praise may thither fly; The earth is not too low, / His praises there may grow. The Church with psalms must shout, No door can keep them out. But above all, the heart / Must bear the longest part. —Kevin St. Clair, Interim Director Gloria Dei Choir Page 7 Adopt A Family This Christmas Catholic Charities of Orange County is hard at work preparing to assist families in need to celebrate and honor the birth of Our Lord this Christmas Season!
