With Peace and Good will for all.” You may or may not recall Perry Como singing those words from That Christmas Feeling. You may or may not even recall Perry Como. I hope however, that you will be filled with Peace and Good will as you recall Christmas! The Holy Season of Christmas provides us with the annual opportunity to recall when the Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary, and she conceived of the Holy Spirit; to recall when “the time came for her to be delivered. And she gave birth to her first-born Son and wrapped in Him swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Saint Luke II:6-7); to recall when wise men from the East followed the star of the new-born King of the Jews, til it came to rest over the place where the Child was; and going into the house they saw the Child with Mary His Mother, and they fell down and worshipped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they fell down and offered Him gifts, gold and frankincense, and myrrh (cf. Saint Matthew II:2-11). Yes, the Christmas Season is the annual opportunity to recall that “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have Eternal Life” (Saint John III:16). “Kids from one to ninety-two” (as Nat King Cole reminds us in The Christmas Song) believe in Him, and so love Him, that two thousand years after His Birth they continue to recall it and give thanks for it; not simply by listening to and singing inspirational Christmas Carols at Christmas, but by what they do the rest of the year: at home where they love one another the Way that God so loved them; at work where they make disciples; at school where they teach them to obey all that He commanded; and at Our Holy Redeemer where in the Spirit of Christmas, they not only recall and give thanks for His birth, but they Baptize giving birth to Jesus with the time, talent, and treasure that keeps us singing all year long! (cf. Saint Matthew XXVIII:19-20) Please, as a new calendar year dawns, make a resolution to keep us singing and to come home with the time, talent, and treasure that, when it comes from you, helps to make Our Holy Redeemer, “where coming home is what it’s all about!” Singing for Our Holy Redeemer, Father Arcoleo A NEW CALENDAR YEAR IS ABOUT TO BEGIN WITH 1 JANUARY 2016: A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION MASSES FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF MARY, HOLY MOTHER OF GOD Thursday, 31 December 5:00 P.M. Thank you. A STRANGER IN OUR HOME A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on. As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger...he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies. If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind. Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.) Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home... not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our longtime visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and.my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol. But the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (much too freely) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing. I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... and NEVER asked to leave. More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures. His name? We call him, "TV." He has a younger sister now. We call her "Computer." FAITH AND EDUCATION SCHOOL’S IN: DRIVE CAREFULLY (both on and off the road) NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL (516) 379-8660 In addition to preparing the Advent Prayer Service we shared with the larger community on 16 December the students at The De La Salle School observed the season in other ways as well. Our annual Hot Cocoa and Book Night was an occasion for families to come together and enjoy some relaxing time. Raffle prizes were awarded and contributions received help build the fund to benefit Hour Children. This agency, based in Queens, was founded 25 years ago and its mission is to help incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and their children successfully rejoin the community, reunify with their families, and build healthy, independent and secure lives. Together with the donations made by students and staff during Morning Assembly for the three weeks of Advent that we were in school, a total of more than $500 was collected and will be sent to Sr. Tesa Fitzgerald, CSJ, the Director of the program. We concluded our Advent time together by sharing a potluck meal featuring foods from the various heritages of our students. More than a dozen countries are represented when we tally the native land of the parents of our current student body. Our International Luncheon was a special way to acknowledge the unity of all God’s people around one table and to witness the will of the Prince of Peace. 27 December 2015 – The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Saint Joseph C Sunday Readings: I Samuel I: 20-22, 24-28; I John III: 1-2, 21-24; Saint Luke II: 41-52 Student’s Name: ____________________________________________________ Class Day/Session: __________________________________________________ Catechist Name: ____________________________________________________ Mass Time (Circle One): Sat: 5:00 PM 7:00 PM Sun: 7:00 AM 8:00 AM 9:30 AM 11:30 AM 1:00 PM GOSPEL QUESTIONS: (Religious Education Students please answer ALL questions) Fill in the blanks: Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, and when He was _________________________ years old, they went up according to festival custom. FAITH AND FINANCES ff What do you do when inclement weather or sickness prevents you from attending Sunday Mass at Our Holy Redeemer, or family/business obligations take you to Sunday Mass somewhere other than Our Holy Redeemer? More than likely, if you use Parish Envelopes to make your offering, you will place “Sunday-missed” envelopes in the Offertory basket the next time you attend Mass. If you don’t use envelopes, it is more than likely that your Sunday-missed offering will remain missing. It is not that you intentionally choose to give Our Holy Redeemer less, it’s just hard to intentionally give to Our Holy Redeemer what you think is more. “Stop thinking”; use envelopes or use E-Giving! E-Giving, like Offertory Envelopes (thank you for using them) provides you with a way of exercising faithful stewardship even when inclement weather or sickness prevents you from attending Sunday Mass at Our Holy Redeemer, or when family/business obligations take you to Sunday Mass somewhere other than Our Holy Redeemer. For more information about E-Giving either call the Rectory or visit the secure web site at www.e-giving.org. SCRIPTURE REFLECTION As we approach the very end of the year we celebrate one of our favorite feasts, the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Saint Joseph. When we meditate on the meaning of this Feast we realize that we are not only celebrating the holiness of the Sacred Family, but also the holiness of our own individual families. You see, our families are holy too because Jesus lives in our hearts, Mary is our Mother, and we view Saint Joseph as the model for a good father. So, when we list the names that make up our family we begin by listing Jesus first, as we do for the Holy Family. Then we list Mary as our Mother, and Saint Joseph as the Model Father. Have you seen the movie, The Nativity Story? It is definitely worthwhile to purchase the DVD. One of the most touching moments of this film is when Mary, appreciating Saint Joseph’s hard work, washes the feet of her exhausted husband. What a great example for us! Today we celebrate the feast by coming to God’s House, our church, and getting together with our extended church family to celebrate the Eucharist, and hear Jesus’ words: “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” We too, as individuals and as a family must be in our Father’s house (See Luke 2:41-52). After they had completed its days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but His parents did not know it. … After three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. … When His parents saw Him, they were astonished. … And He said to them, “Why were you looking for Me?
