Williams The tabernacle burns “In Memory Melissa Evan Maclean” by O-Sun & Calvin Furlong FEBRUARY 22, 2015 A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT In today’s Gospel, Jesus urges his listeners to do two things: to believe in the Good News and to repent. The steward is called to repent: to acquire an openness to begin anew, to change existing attitudes and habits, and to act with faith in the Gospel. In this season of Lent, now is the time to ask ourselves whether or not we truly believe in the Gospel; and if we do, to what extent are we willing to change our prevailing habits and be more faithful to the Gospel? Marriage comes from the loving hand of God, who fashioned both male and female in the divine image. A man "leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body." God blesses the man and woman and commands them to "be fertile and multiply," and Jesus reiterates these teachings from Genesis, saying, "But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother [and be joined to his wife], and the two shall become one flesh'" (Mk 10:6-8). SACRED HEART COMMUNITY CLINIC HOURS: Walk-ins, Tues. & Thurs., 5 p.m.—8 p.m.; Registrations, Mon. & Fri., 9 a.m.—Noon FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING This Lenten season begins with the contrasting images of the desert and flood waters. We live in the paradox of these images needing to go into the desert of fasting, prayer and self-denial in order to re-learn the covenant way of life we entered through the waters of baptism. Now is the time to turn from the flood of distractions which can drown us. Now is the time to remember and reverence our dignity and the dignity of every human person. Now is the time to set aside anything that diverts us from our true hunger and thirst for God alone and his covenant of love with all humanity. PRO-LIFE LINE/ LINEA PRO-VIDA Marriage - Why God's Design—Continued from page 5 These biblical passages help us to appreciate God's plan for marriage. It is an intimate union in which the spouses give themselves, as equal persons, completely and lovingly to one another. By their mutual gift of self, they cooperate with God in bringing children to life and in caring for them. Marriage is both a natural institution and a sacred union because it is rooted in the divine plan for creation. In addition, the Church teaches that the valid marriage of baptized Christians is a sacrament—a saving reality. Jesus Christ made marriage a symbol of his love for his Church (see Eph 5:25-33). This means that a sacramental marriage lets the world see, in human terms, something of the faithful, creative, abundant, and self-emptying love of Christ. A true marriage in the Lord with his grace will bring the spouses to holiness. Their love, manifested in fidelity, passion, fertility, generosity, sacrifice, forgiveness, and healing, makes known God's love in their family, communities, and society. This Christian meaning confirms and strengthens the human value of a marital union (see CCC, nos. 1612-1617; 1641-1642). http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/marriage-and-family/marriage/promotion-and-defense-ofmarriage Project Rachel Retreat—March 27-29 If you are suffering mental, emotional, and spiritual effects of abortion, the healing ministry of Project Rachel can help. The next Project Rachel Retreat will be held from March 27-29. Please call 1-877-WeCare2 or email [email protected], for more information. Prayers Needed We pray that the Supreme Court will be guided by right reason and render a true and just decision upholding the constitutionality of states to respect the institution of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. We urge everyone to make a personal pledge to pray and fast daily for marriage and for this extremely urgent intention. Crisis Pregnancy? Suffering from an abortion? There is help. Call 1-877-WeCare2. "I have set before you life and death . . .choose life, that you and your descendants may live!"
