At this time, parishioners are being invited to offer input to a series of questions in the “Lineamenta” or final preparatory document. Visit www.drvc.org and click on the “Synod of Bishops” icon to access the questions and directions. The deadline for all responses to be received by the Diocese is March 13, 2015. March 8, 2015 - Third Sunday of Lent March 8, 2015 Third Sunday of Lent THE PATH TO FREEDOM Most of us, if we were asked “Does the phrase ‘the Ten Commandments’ appear in the Bible?” would likely get it wrong, because the answer is “no.” “The Ten Commandments” is a post‑biblical, phrase that developed along with an image of God as police officer that is not found in today’s passage from Exodus. The first phrase is the key: God is the one who brings us out of slavery; following God’s law or commands is our path to freedom. The moneychangers whom Jesus drove from the temple were not explicitly breaking any of the commandments, but neither were they helping people to find God’s path to freedom as they came to worship at the temple. This is an important Lenten lesson for us. We need to stop asking ourselves whether or not we are breaking specific rules or regulations and instead examine our lives to see if we are truly following a path to God’s freedom through Christ. China ranked #29 out of the 100 countries where Christians face the most persecution. The communist Chinese government aims to control all religious activities. They have declared some churches 'evil cults,’ the Roman Catholic Church is illegal, and the state is actively fighting against it. In Mexico, which ranked #38 with 120 million Christians out of a population of 125 million, Christians have been targeted because churches are revenue centers (extortions) and churches support programs for the rehabilitation of drug addicts and alcoholics. Anti-Semitism is on the rise in the Middle East and Europe (www.wsj.com, 1/30/15) where Jews are wondering if Europe will remain their home forever with 26,500 people immigrating to Israel in 2014 (theatlantic.com, 2/16/15; cnn.com, 2/16/15). FBI statistics on hate crimes committed in America in 2012 reveal that 60% were against Jews (wwwchristianpost.com,11/26/13). On March 25, 2015 - 7 pm - at St. James Church, 429 Rte 25A, Setauket - Catholics for Freedom of Religion presents: Kelly Shackelford, President and CEO of Liberty Institute, Plano, Texas and Thomas Renker, General Counsel for The Diocese of Rockville Centre. They will discuss why there is a need to protect and restore religious freedom in America and how it is under serious attack in our schools and churches, military and throughout the public arena. Our next CFFR meeting, Monday, March 16 at 7:00 pm in the Outreach Center. Contact Pat Flynn 668-4545 All Are Welcome! Thank You Our Last Maureen’s Haven date is this weekend as the winter season winds down. Thank you to everyone who so compassionately and generously volunteered, cooked and served, or donated food and clothing to our homeless friends. We know they truly appreciate all we do because they tell us so every time we see them. Some have gotten jobs and are looking forward to earning money this coming summer season, and some have actually been housed and don’t need our services anymore! We have been called to this wonderful ministry and we are making a difference in the lives of these people who truly need us! My Dear Family of St. Therese, Remember me? It seems like so long since I have written to you. So much has been going on and despite the snow, I do not know where the time has gone. Since I last wrote we had a visit from my dear friend, Fr. Mariusz, from Poland, who will be returning this summer for his vacation. I also had the opportunity to take a trip out west to the desert for a few days (in anticipation of joining Jesus in the desert during Lent! :) We also had our “Upside Down Raffle” which really brought a joy and warmth to a cold Sunday afternoon in winter. I would say the highlight of the past few weeks was my formal installation as your Pastor. Fr. Ed Sheridan from St. Rosalie’s in Hampton Bays (our local Dean) came on February 8th to the 10:30 Mass. It was a joy to have my family here and several friends from former parishes (and Fr. Mariusz, too). I would like to say a word of thanks to the music ministry for adding so much to the celebration. It was great to see all the choirs together at one Mass. I would also like to thank those who made the reception a true celebration and gave my family and friends a glimpse of what wonderful, generous parishioners I have been blessed with. But the celebrations have not come to an end! On March 15th we will have our annual “St. Baldrick’s Shaving of the Heads”! The St. Baldrick group raises money through donations to fight childhood cancer. There are shavers and shavees . This year I will be a shavee! There will be more information in the weeks ahead. Also in March we will have our Montauk St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 22nd. I understand that the day is truly one to be experienced!!!! Just a heads up - On MARCH 22nd SUNDAY MASS WILL BE AT 10:00 so as not to interfere with the parade (as per Fr. Mike’s advise, the church will be locked after the 10:00 Mass). Spring is on its way! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Printed from www.
