Today’s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. The psalm reminds us that if we truly keep the covenant, the way of life God expects us to follow will not be a burden, but a source of love and truth. Peter’s letter gives one explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal that we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words that Jesus proclaims immediately following his temptation show us the way: “Repent and believe in the gospel.” It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived in our baptismal promises. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - I will set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth (Genesis 9:8-15). Psalm - Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant (Psalm 25). Second Reading - The water of the flood prefigured baptism, which saves you now (1 Peter 3:18-22). Gospel - Jesus was tempted by Satan, and the angels ministered to him (Mark 1:12-15) The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. Catholics for Freedom of Religion About a half million people participated in the annual "March for Life" in Washington, D.C. this year, prompting Parade Marshal from Virginia, Conor Shiel ,to comment, "This absolutely cannot be considered a 'Catholic event'. So far, I have met Buddhists, Orthodox, Eastern Rite Catholics, Baptists and Mormons...the cause of life transcends any religion." Responding to criticism about the "March for Life" by self-described Catholic politicians, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone said, "There is no debate in the Catholic Church about life beginning at conception and no room for Catholics to "dissent" on the principle (newsmax.com 1/16/15).” Please remember The Little Sisters of the Poor who are still fighting the mandate to either violate their deeply held religions convictions or pay crippling fines to the IRS. Professional Therapy and Counseling Family, marriage, and individual therapies, provided by New York State licensed therapists, are available to our parish and 148 other parishes. The program, under the direction of Dr. George Guiliani, has been conducted in the diocese for the past 41 years for the convenience of parishioners. It is provided by the Catholic Counseling Center, a proprietary professional corporation, which is independent of and not controlled or supervised by the parish or diocese. Most insurance policies, including Medicare, are honored. For confidential information and appointments, please call Dr. Giuliani at the Catholic Counseling Center at 631-243-2503 or go to our website at http://www.thecatholiccounselingcenter.com. The Catholic Counseling Center 12 Ryder Court, Dix Hills, NY 11746 A little boy was overheard praying: 'Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I am.' Good Friday is an obligatory day of fasting (ages18-59) and abstinence from meat for Catholics (ages 14 and older). In addition, all Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence from meat. Reflection The waters of Baptism make us part of the new covenant in Christ. The Bishop’s pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us that “there is a fundamental obligation arising from the sacrament of Baptism...that people place their gifts, their resources - their selves - at God’s service in and through the Church.” February 22, 2015 - First Sunday of Lent I Domingo de Cuaresma, Año B. Ilustración © 1996 M. McGrath. Printed from www.
