There is no other reason to be a member of the Church. Christ founded the Church that it may guide and nourish the believer through instruc‐ on in the teachings of the Lord and the celebra on of the sacraments. Each me we celebrate the sacraments, pray, and read the Sacred Scriptures we grow in our rela onship with the Lord and we are further empowered to go forth and make disciples of others. Within the ordinary, everyday ac‐ ons of our lives we have the opportunity to announce the Gospel to others. As we share with them our story of faith, the faith story of the Church con nues for another genera‐ on. This new genera on of believers now knows what we know, that God is faithful and in the faithfulness of God we “live, move, and have our being” as people. It is the Holy Spirit who inspires us to know the Lord, to seek the Lord and to let ourselves be loved by the Lord. Being a member of the Church a great, divine blessing. Our membership in the Church and our life of discipleship with the Lord Jesus grows as we follow the promp ngs of the Holy Spirit given to us in the sacrament of Confirma on. The Catechism tells us in ar cle 1285 that “by the sacrament of Confirma on, the bap zed are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed." Sealed with the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands and the anoin ng with the Sacred Chrism we are con‐ firmed in our rela onship to the Triune God and are sent forth the proclaim our faith to all we meet. Being confirmed in the Church is to take our place as full members of this holy community and share in the ministry of making the Lord pre‐ sent within our lives. The Sacrament of Confirma on is God’s elec on of us as his disciples and as proclaimers of His love. What a blessing. This Thursday, May 14 I will confirm our young people who have prepared for this sacrament for the last two years. Please join me in prayer that what the Lord has begun in these wonderful young people will be brought to full stature in Christ Jesus. We congratulate our confirmandi and their families. Today we celebrate our mothers. Mother’s Day is a celebra‐ on of the goodness that is our mothers. Without their love, faith and encouragement, where would we be as their sons and daughters? It is in a mother’s heart where we find the love to move through life with confidence and hope. We thank God for our mothers and ask the richest of the Lord’s blessings to fill them this day, and always. Happy Mother’s day. Have a blessed week in the Lord. Fr. Hoy celebramos nuestras madres. Padre Don, OSM May November 10, 2015 2, 2014 St. Philip Benizi, O.S.M Catholic Community Page 4 Treasures from our Tradition With June not far off, attention in the parish turns to the celebration of weddings. Perhaps no other area of parish life is more shaped or challenged by the expectations of our culture. An old Irish proverb, “Marry in Lent and you’re soon to repent,” is amplified by another warning: “Marry in May and rue the day!” Memories of old pagan parties in May endured, and the Irish felt wedding receptions in May would be a stress on community morals. Queen Victoria did not approve of May weddings either, and her influence is still felt on family calendars, as is her daughter’s introduction of the white wedding gown. Sometimes we mistake customs and curiosities for tradition. Tradition with a capital “T” has to do with Christ’s miraculous rescue of the wedding feast at Cana, his affirmation of a man and woman pledging lifelong fidelity at the heart of a community’s feast. The Church cherished that memory over time, but it took a millennium for us to think of marriage as a sacrament. Much of the rest of what we associate with weddings has to do with culture, customs, and family practices. A wise rabbi once said that “tradition is not wearing your father’s hat; tradition is having a child.” Don’t let Queen Victoria reign over your wedding plans! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Living God’s Word GOD’S WORD TODAY Today’s readings are some of the most reassuring and hope-filled in the Lectionary. When we hear words such as “love” and “joy” used over and over again in a set of readings, it is a signal for us simply to thank God for the incredible gift given to this world in and through Jesus Christ. Here, and only here, can we find a fountain of love and joy that will never run dry. Here, and only here, can we find the kind of hope that can pull us out of even the deepest despair. As the word of God is proclaimed this day, let us be filled with thanksgiving for the inestimable gift that comes to us in Christ Jesus. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power. (Psalm 98) No one has greater love than this; to lay down one’s life for one’s friend. - (John 15:9-17) or John 17:11b-19 DEEP DEBT My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual, and physical education I received from her. — George Washington LITTLE THINGS Faithfulness in little things is a big thing. — St. John Chrysostom From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright © J. S. Paluch Company LOVE ONE ANOTHER Last Sunday we heard the familiar passage from John’s Gospel in which Jesus uses the metaphor of the vine and the branches. In that passage we were told that if we remained in Christ we would bear much fruit. Today’s Gospel tells us just what that fruit is: love. Today’s second reading and Gospel together create a great hymn to love. The chorus of this hymn is simple—God loves us so much that Jesus was sent into the world so that we would have life. The Lord Jesus, who last week told us to remain in him, this week tells us to remain in his love. In a world marked by division and terrorism, the Lord’s final words in today’s Gospel are a great challenge: “This I command you: love one another.” Copyright © J. S.
