YEAR OF MERCY
December 8, 2015 November 20, 2016
Explanation of International Image: The
Good Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity and does so with a love with the
power to change one’s life. While the
Good Shepherd, in his great mercy, takes
humanity upon himself, his eyes are merged with those of
man. The three concentric ovals, with colors progressively lighter as we move outward, suggest the movement of
Christ who carries humanity out of the night of sin and
death.
Besides a new liturgical year, this Advent features
an additional “beginning”—this week’s opening of
the Jubilee Year of Mercy, a graced opportunity to
contemplate more profoundly and live more concretely the mystery of God’s unconditional love.
Pope Francis says that mercy, as the bridge connecting God and the human family, opens our hearts to
welcome God’s love for us sinners and our eyes to
recognize others, especially society’s least loved and
most vulnerable, as brothers and sisters entrusted to
our care. In a unique way, this Jubilee Year’s Advent reminds us that Jesus, whose coming we await,
is already present among us, in those for whom we
need to become instruments of God’s mercy. This
Tuesday, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis will open the “Holy Door” in
Saint Peter’s Basilica, symbolically opening the Jubilee Year of Mercy.
In today’s scriptures, Baruch confidently anticipates
God’s healing of the brokenness of humanity, and
Paul sees God bringing our discernment, knowledge,
and love to fulfillment.
Our experience of life and of ourselves can make
such prophecies seem wildly optimistic, even hopelessly naïve. Pope Francis challenges us to live this
Jubilee Year as a graced time, when God’s mercy
reawakens our enthusiasm to live our baptismal call
as gospel people, our hope renewed and ourselves
recommitted to selfless charity. Notice that in
Luke’s Gospel today, God bypasses the religious
elite and politically powerful to speak to a humble
believer in the barren desert the saving word that
will transform history. So God’s mercy continues to
accomplish humanity’s salvation in and through ordinary, flawed, and least likely instruments-even us.

RISE AGAIN Capital Campaign
Our Goal: $6,000,000
Please check the new Campaign Pledge
Board at the side exit of the church. In addition to
our pledge goal, it shows the amount of dollars
pledged so far, how much has been paid on those
pledges, and what is still owed. Also listed are
pledge dollars that are past due for more than 90
days and pledges that have been suspended or cancelled by parishioners for personal reasons. These
figures will be updated monthly.
As per many requests, parishioners that make automatic payments on their pledges will no longer receive a monthly statement in the mail, unless they
call the Campaign Office and make a request to receive a monthly statement.
We still have a long way to go to reach our goal
of $6,000,000 – we need everyone’s support! No
amount is too small! Please visit the church website
www.sjvhh.org to make a pledge or a payment.
You can also visit the parish office to make your
donation, or place it in the bright pink envelope at
church.
If you have any questions about the campaign or
your account, please call Leticia Vargas, 626-3302269, Ext. 240.
Campana Capital “RISE AGAIN”
Nuestra Meta: $6,000,000

SIMBANG GABI
SATURDAY, DEC. 19 AT 5:15 PM
Simbang Gabi (Simbang means Mass
and Gabi means night or evening) is a
Filipino spiritual tradition which began
in the Philippines around 1669. This novena of
masses expressed the sentiments of the people toward Mary and manifested the Filipino rite of celebrating life in more festive ways. These Masses
would be celebrated in the early hours of the morning (as the rooster crows - to announce a new day)
so that they could go back into the fields to work.
However, when the Filipino immigrants brought this
tradition with them to the United States, it was not
practical to have these celebrations that early in the
morning, so now the local churches have the celebrations at night while keeping the substance of the
celebration.
All are welcome to participate in this
bi-lingual (English-Tagalog) celebration.
