Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners,
It was a wonderful weekend that we had for our regional parishes to celebrate different events with our children (their First Communion) and for our Faith Community to honor the Virgin Mary, by crowning Her and presenting Her with flowers during the month of
May. We ask you to pray for our candidates as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. We have a big
group for Baptism during the Easter Season and we extend our congratulations to parents and godparents for taking up their responsibility to pass on the Faith that they believe to their children and godchildren. We have a big group of candidates who will receive the
Sacrament of Confirmation on May 20th at St. Ann’s Church and we welcome Bishop Eusebio who will celebrate this sacrament with
them. We welcomed Priests, Deacons, Sisters, and Seminarians from the Regional XII (from the States of Alaska, Idaho, Montana,
Oregon and Washington) who came to the Year of Consecrated Life event last Monday for a day of prayers and support for the vocation of religious life and to the Priesthood. It was a joyful day as we gathered with them. We thank you for your support and for assisting me to provide hospitality in welcoming them. We also gathered to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Priestly life of Father
Francis Mien with the Vietnamese community last Friday and celebrated the temporary vows of Sister Lan Kim Hoang from the religious order of the Sisters of the Lover of the Holy Cross of Go-Vap. It was a blessed week that we had and it will be a wonderful
week ahead for us with many celebrations, tasks and responsibilities to fulfill numerous projects that we are committed to do.
We congratulate our Mothers within our regional parishes that are living among us, that they have a joyful
weekend with their children and families. We cordially invite their children to join us to celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend before the students of the CCD program go on their summer break. It is important
for us to be closer to our spiritual Mother (Virgin Mary), so we can receive Her blessing upon us during
this month. I invite you to come and join with the Faith Community to the house of prayer (our Church) to
pray the Rosary with us before Daily and Weekend Masses. It is a good way of bringing flowers from
your own garden to the Church to offer it to Her. We also have our own mother and we join them on this
Mother’s Day weekend in letting them know how much we love and care for them. It is not only this
weekend, but we have the obligation to do it each day of our lives to honor them. Our parish volunteers have prepared beautiful floral bouquets for you to buy and give to your mom on this special day. We thank the Sisters and volunteers for assisting us with this
project, so we can appreciate our mothers on Mother’s Day.
We thank you for completing the Annual Catholic Appeal commitment card and returning it to the parish office or to the Annual
Catholic Appeal Office. Your commitment is very important for each of our parishes to achieve the goal that we have and we are
hoping to receive a sufficient rebate for the project that we want to work on. There is information on the bulletin on how many people have returned their commitment card each week, so we thank them for their support.
We thank the parish leadership team who came to the Pastoral Planning meeting with the Deanery’s representative to share their insight and feedback on the planning of the Pierce Deanery. It is good to voice our suggestion in the process of planning, so we do not
feel left out of the Pastoral Planning. We thank the Financial Council from each parish for preparing the budget for the coming year.
We thank the coordinator within each ministry for working with the Financial Council in assisting them with the information for the
budget. Each organization and ministry has a dream or wish that they would like to do (projects), but we need to be faithful with the
Vision and Priority of the parish and the most important is to have a balanced budget. Therefore, each ministry needs to know the
financial limitation of our parishes and what we are only able to do. We thank the parish leadership team who are working very close
with me in all different projects and especially assisting me with the vision and priority to envision and support the parish’s mission
to serve God’s people.
We thank the liturgical ministers who are serving our regional parishes. You are very special within our parish as you represent
Christ who is among us each time we gather to worship. We also thank the Outreach ministers who come to visit those who are
homebound, sick, poor, and share the love of Christ within and outside of our regional parishes. We also thank those volunteers in
the parish office for assisting us with the paper work and various administrative tasks (i.e. mailing out parish letters, answering phone
calls and making others feel welcome when they come to the parish office). We also thank many volunteers in the Faith Formation
program (i.e. teachers, catechists, teacher’s aides, and those that support the program by leading it or providing support in other
ways). We deeply appreciate you for your time and talent that you share with us. I cannot thank you enough and always keep you
and your family in my daily prayers and thoughts. As you become involved in the parish life and activities, you have come to know
that our regional parishes depends heavily on volunteers to carry on the parish mission; and we have only a few support staff who are
over loaded with key areas of responsibility that they need to complete (their tasks) each day. We need to keep our parish balanced
and healthy, so we have to make sure that the clergy and staff are in good health to serve us. Thus, your time and talent is the core
and heart of keeping the parish alive and strong in what we are doing.
There is much more information that you must and should know to support our parish mission, so please read our regional parishes’
bulletin and website. We are encouraging each of the parish ministries to provide a short report to us, so we can post them and share
with you the Good News. Thank you for your continue support of our parish mission. May the Lord continue to bless upon you and
your family!
Sincerely yours in Christ,

Does the Catholic Church teach that the Bible is the sole rule of
faith? Actually the Church has taught for 2000 years that divine
revelation is contained in both the Sacred Scriptures and in Sacred Tradition. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines
Scripture as the bible composed of books containing the truth
of God’s Revelation that were composed by human authors inspired by the Holy Spirit (105). Tradition is defined as the living transmission of the message of the Gospel in the Church.
The oral preaching of the Apostles and the written message of
salvation are conserved and handed on as the deposit of faith
through the apostolic succession. Both the living Tradition and
the written Scriptures have their common source in the revelation of God in Jesus (75-82) Catholics believe that Sacred Tradition or truths were handed down to the Apostles orally by our
Lord. This is known as apostolic tradition. Protestants claim that
the Bible is the only rule of faith and that it contains all the material one needs for “theology.” Therefore no apostolic tradition, Church Magisterium (teaching authority) is needed to help
one understand. The Protestant view teaches that all Christian
truth can be found within the Bible. Anything else is extraneous, non-authoritative, unnecessary or wrong. The Second Vatican Council said in the document Dei Verbum (The Word of
God) that there is a close connection and communication between Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture because both flow
from God. The Word of God was entrusted to the Apostles by
Jesus and passed on to His Church.

I am counting on you to participate in support of the Appeal this
year in some way. If you gave last year, please consider increasing
your gift by 5% this year. If you did not give last year, would you
consider a gift of a dollar a day ($365)? Gifts of any amount are
welcome, and your gift will make a big impact on many lives in
Western Washington!

Prayer of the Faithful ~ May 10, 2015
For mothers:That they may be strengthened in bringing
the life-giving love of Christ to their children and to the world; We
pray to the Lord...Respect Life"The most important person on
earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built
Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something
more magnificent than any cathedral—a dwelling for an immortal
soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body. The angels have not
been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother
can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation. . . What on God’s good earth is more glorious than this; to be
a mother?” -Joszef Cardinal Mindszenty Smile! Your Mom
choose life! Thanks Mom!
Confirmation
This past weekend our Confirmation class attended the Confirmation Retreat given at SJOW Parish. It was a large class of 68 students from St. Ann’s, SJOW, and Sacred Heart. The students found
it to be a powerful experience. We thank all who helped to make it a
success.
We had the following adults give presentations:
Peaches Dela Paz, Justin Claravall, S.J., Fr. Paolo Laga, Bryce
Comfort, Theresa Dent, Leilani Siaki and Jacob Hayden.
The retreat was ran by Fr.Laga, Theresa Dent, Manuel Morales,
Leilani Siaki, and Jacob Hayden.
The following students returned from previous years to help out on
the retreat: Jasmin, Maria, Jewlie and Kenny.
A big thank you to parents who provided security to the area, parents who brought food, who served and cleaned up the area. SJOW,
we are most grateful to you for your generosity in letting us use
your facilities. May our young people take what they learned and go
out into the world and share what they have learned with others.

proclaim the Gospels and embrace our many cultures and the gifts we share. We come together as one faith community to
celebrate the Eucharist and the Sacraments. We are grateful to those who built this place of worship with faith, sacrifice and
sanctified it with their many years of devotion. We remain focused on our Roman Catholic traditions and promote an
environment of hope, where all can grow into the likeness of Christ.
Catholic Annual Appeal
Each year during the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign, we
pause and consider all the good that is done because we
give: the homeless are sheltered; the elderly are cared for; our seminarians are
prepared for future ministry, to name a few. Great things are accomplished in
the name of Jesus!
If you have not already done so, please consider making your annual commitment today to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Gifts of any amount are welcome, and
your gift will make everything possible. If you cannot make a financial commitment at this time, please fill out an envelope and pledge to offer a prayer (write
it in the pledge amount box). Please fill out a pledge envelope today or go
online to donate: www.seattlearchdiocese.org/donate. To date we have received 95 Pledge Envelopes. Thank You!

Have you noticed the new sidewalk and
parking spaces in front of the church office? The
men from the facilities committee have worked so
hard in the rain and hot sun to provide these new
parking spaces for us. More handicap parking is now
also available in front of the church as well. We are
fortunate to have these men who have the know-how
and can provide us with their time & talents that
save us a bundle of money! Removing the circular
driveway and old cement was a very difficult job but
the guys along with Fr. Laga’s help really worked
hard and got the job accomplished. So many times
these facilities men do so many jobs around the
church and grounds which goes unnoticed. They
would not want their names in this article. But remember these men are always working together on
repair projects as well as yard maintenance. If you
know who these men & women are please
‘THANK’ “ them for their service to our church
community!

Annual Catholic Appeal Campaign 2015 Project As mentioned in Father Tuan's Annual Catholic Appeal letter mailed to you, the
proposed use of the rebate is to replace the pews in our Church. The Facilities
Committee contacted Ediger Church Furniture Inc. located in Oregon
and received 4 estimates for various styles and types of seating. The recommended
replacement pews would be constructed of sold Red Oak, with solid contour seats
and solid tongue groove wood backs at a cost of $81,636.; Red Oak is a hardwood and would have a long life and can
be easily cleaned, polished and maintained. Our current pews are constructed of a soft wood, fir, and were probably
placed in our current Church building which was completed in December of 1947, making them about 68 years
old. The pews are showing the wear of 68 years. The replacement of the pews was one of 10 projects included in the
2008 plan for restoring and prolonging the life of the Church. New pews were mentioned again in the Vision 2017
booklet each of us have received.
New pews appear to be the priority.
We are currently working with the Archdiocese to make good choices to finance and purchase the pews.
Your generous pledge and contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal Campaign 2015 can increase the amount of
rebate returned to Saint John of the Woods and in turn help pay for the new pews.
THANK YOU for your continued generosity and support of our church, Saint John of the Woods and the Church of

Queridos Feligreses:
