Dear parish family,
THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
We hear once again the familiar story of the “widow’s mite” in this Sunday’s gospel. We are reminded that
Jesus is “watching” those giving money in the Temple treasury. And he was not impressed by those who
gave big amounts out of their surplus but the widow who had given a little amount caught his attention
because, out of her poverty, she gave all that she has.
I am sure all of us will be impressed if for example Donald Trump will donate a million dollar to pay
our debt and renovate our church facilities. But we won’t take notice of a regular weekly contribution of $ 10
or 20 or 30 of a retiree, a single mom, or those who have low income to support our church out of pure love
and devotion. For Donald Trump the amount is a surplus, the figure though so big for us is just a fraction of
what he really has. The difference lies in heart, the motive, and the capacity to give out love. Jesus doesn’t
care for the amount of money given, but for the amount of love. When we love, we do not give out of surplus
rather our very selves to support the one we love. In terms of giving money, for the Lord Jesus it is not
about the quantity of what is given rather it is the quality of the heart that gives. The truth is when we love
and when we give out of love, we just feel good about giving and that we have that something to give, the
amount becomes irrelevant.
It is unfortunate that many Catholics are more generous to waiters than to God. They give up to
20% of their bill. That is double-tithing. But the Lord God deserves not a tip but a tribute, a tribute of love.
Nonetheless our tribute to the Lord is not only in terms of money but also of our service of time and
talents to the church we belong. So in the same token that our Lord recognizes the “widow’s mite”, I would
want to acknowledge the work and ministry of the “little ones” who faithfully serve the needs of the parish:
the greeters, ushers, janitors, volunteers for the St. Vincent de Paul Society, visitors to the sick and
homebound, volunteer teachers of the religion classes, and the very silent group who devoutly spend time
with the Lord at the adoration chapel praying for all of us, and still more, those who serve the church in their
personal capacities in special parish functions, etc.. The Lord, who constantly “watches,” surely noticed their
“small acts of love” outpouring from their big heart. In fact our parish exists because of the “givers” - big and
small, and we grow as a faith community because there are those who really can give out of love.
Blessings to you and have a good week.
Querida familia parroquial,
Fr. Tony
Padre Tony

Ask yourself “Am I only giving from my surplus wealth?”

“The Battlefield”
Parental Notice
This week at Life Night we discussed the areas of
our life that are open to spiritual battle. We
challenged our teenagers to reflect on areas where
they are weak and need to fortify their spiritual
defenses. Your son or daughter wrote a “battle
plan” that examined these areas and then he or
she made resolutions for how to respond with
prayer ad action. Take time to reflect on your own
life and areas where you find spiritual attack most
prevalent. How can you combat these areas?
Spend a few minutes reflecting on your own faith;
the greatest example that a teenager can have of
our Catholic faith comes from you.
