The passage of the Voting Rights
Acts did more than do away with
Jim Crow laws in the south following the Civil War. It outlawed
all efforts by any entity to keep
people of color from voting through

Hemisfair abrirá el Jardín

Imagínate caminando y jugando
en un lugar histórico que ha sido
creado para mejorar nuestra ciudad. Bueno, la espera ha terminado
para turistas y residentes de San
Antonio.
Hemisfair, antes conocido como
el parque HemisFair, abrirá la
primera fase (de un proyecto de
mejoramiento de tres fases) con la
inauguración del Jardín Yanaguana
el fin de semana del 2 de octubre.
El acontecimiento se iniciará el
viernes 2 de octubre junto con la
celebración de Primer Viernes en la
noche. Habrá música, camiones de
comida y trabajos artísticos.
El sábado 3 de octubre se rea­
lizará la ceremonia oficial de
corte de cinta, que tendrá lugar a
las 9:30 de la mañana. Asimismo,
se llevarán a cabo actividades que
implican temas enfocados en la
salud y la comunidad.
Para finalizar las fiestas, el do-
mingo será un día más dedicado
a las artes. Los artistas que han
contribuido al Yanaguana Garden
estarán haciendo proyectos gratis
todo el día para niños de todas las
edades.
A partir de ese momento, el
parque estará abierto desde las 7
de la mañana hasta la medianoche.
“El objetivo es invitar a la gente
de todas las edades y ofrecerles,
principalmente fortalecimiento
comunitario, también salud, educación y obras de arte”, expresó
Drew Hicks, el gerente de comunicaciones de Hemisfair Park
Area Redevelopment Corporation
(HPARC).

Google Fiber’s ultra fast internet
makes its way to the fast-growing
city of San Antonio, Texas.
Mayor Ivy Taylor made the
googly-announcement this past
Wednesday.
This fairly new internet service
is said to bring 1,000 megabits per
second which exceeds the average
American broadband speed currently at 11.9 megabits per second.
Google Fiber currantly offers
Internet service in other cities at
$70 per month. However, it also
has one gigabit Internet service
and a little more than 150 cable
TV channels for $130 per month.
The Alamo city is one of the
12 “fiber” cities and is the largest
to land Google Fiber. The words
“a city on the rise” were echoed
throughout the announcement.
“San Antonio is a city on the
rise, it is a city that you can build,”
Geekdom director Lorenzo Gomez
said. “Very few people can build a
city in their lifetime.”
Gomez is an advocate for
Google Fiber because it fulfills
every need in the 80/20 Foundation, a private foundation which
invests in programs to encourage
entrepreneurship, STEM education, and development in downtown San Antonio.
Gomez aspires that Fiber becomes the catalyst in placing
Geekdom on the levels of Rackspace. He called Fiber a “game
changer.”
San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor,
who has pushed for Fiber since
becoming mayor, shared her
thoughts on the “historic” moment.
“As the seventh largest city in
America, San Antonio has worked
closely with Fiber to plan a network that will attract and retain
the next generation of innovators,”
Taylor said.
Taylor added, “Our residents,
neighborhoods and businesses
will benefit greatly from having
access to ultra high-speed internet
and our becoming a Google Fiber
community brings us a giant step
closer to becoming a community
where all our residents are connected to opportunity.”
Kansas City was the first city to
land Google Fiber in 2011. Kyle
Ginavan is the CEO of tech company Nexas HQ, and in a Skype
interview with KSAT 12 he said,

field of Presidential candidates finally got around to the first of what
many will hope will be numerous
debates Thursday evening.
The field of 10 top-tier candidates clashed at Quicken Loans
Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. It
included: real estate magnate
Donald Trump, former Florida
Gov. Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Gov.
Scott Walker, former Arkansas
Gov. Mike Huckabee, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, Texas Sen.
Ted Cruz, Kentucky Sen. Marco
Rubio, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul,
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie
and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

10 errores en los debates Calendario de la comunidad
La televi­sión,
todavía, destruye
candidatos y elige presidentes.
Los periódicos
dan contexto, la
Internet desentie­
Jorge Ramos rra esqueletos y
las redes sociales destacan las tendencias de los
votantes. Pero la televisión sigue
dominando. Por eso la obsesión
y preocupación de los candidatos
presidenciales en Estados Unidos
con los debates televisivos.
Este jueves, 6 de agosto, 10 de
los 17 candidatos presidenciales del
Partido Republicano se van a enfrentar en el primer debate televisivo de
la temporada. Quedar fuera del debate puede significar, para muchos
candidatos, el fin de sus aspiraciones
presidenciales. Pero los que sí van
a participar –los 10 primeros según
un promedio de encuestas– podrán
obtener más donaciones y aguantar
hasta las elecciones primarias en
Iowa en febrero. La tele hace y
deshace.
Después de más de tres décadas
trabajando en la televisión y de
haber visto un montón de debates,
estos son, para mí, los 10 errores
más frecuentes de los candidatos y
la manera de superarlos:
1. La audiencia que importa es la
que te ve por televisión, no la que
está en el auditorio donde se realiza
el debate. Guiarse por los gritos,
abucheos, miradas y silencios de
la gente que ve el debate en vivo es
una distracción. Piensa en los ojos
que ven el debate por televisión.
Nada más.
2. El moderador del debate no es
tu enemigo. Él es solo alguien que
hace las preguntas y facilita la con­
versación entre candidatos. Basta con
discutir con los otros candidatos. No
te pelees también con el moderador.
3. Haz declaraciones fuertes,
claras y cortas que se puedan convertir en lo que llamamos “momentos
televisivos. Esos se harán virales
en las redes sociales. Nadie volverá
a ver el debate completo. Pero los
mejores momentos se repetirán
millones de veces en celulares y la
Internet. (Eso logró el senador Lloyd
Bentsen cuando le dijo al joven Dan
Quayle: Tú no eres Jack Ke­nnedy.
Hoy, 27 años después de ese debate
entre candidatos a la vicepresidencia, la gente todavía se acuerda).
4. Nunca repitas una ofensa,
acusación o un insulto en tu contra.
Si lo haces, ese será el titular.
5. Si te atacan, responde. No hay
nada peor que un candidato débil
que se esconde. Pero res­ponde proporcionalmente al ataque. Y luego,
regresa a tu mensaje. Esta técnica
se conoce en inglés como block and
circle” (bloquea el ataque, dale la
vuelta y regresa a tus temas).
6. El que se enoja pierde. Los optimistas ganan más elecciones que los
enojados. Un candidato que pierde
la compostura y el control deja de ser
presidenciable muy rápidamente.
7. Nunca olvides para qué estás
ahí. Piensa en cuál quieres que sea
la noticia al día siguiente e insiste en
tu mensaje. Otros harán lo mismo.
Prepara una estrategia. Pero si de
pronto las cosas cambian, hay que
tener la flexibilidad y la claridad
mental para adaptarte a circunstancias inesperadas.
8. Sí importa cómo te ves. La
televisión es un medio totalmente visual. Tu mensaje tiene que ir acompañado de la ropa apropiada y de un
lenguaje corporal muy seguro. Hay
debates en que es más importante
la imagen que proyectas que lo que
dices. Ve a los ojos –es decir, directo
a tu cámara– afloja la lengua, relaja
la cara, suelta las manos y párate
bien erguido. Sonríe solo si te sale
natural. No hay nada peor que una
sonrisa falsa. No seas robótico. Los

no más de 30 segundos para cada

televisión, además, hace grande
los pequeños deta­lles. Así que no
pretendas ser nadie más. No finjas y
usa el mismo lenguaje de todos los
días. La única forma de sobrevivir
a un debate televisivo es siendo lo
más parecido a ti mismo.

Just a Thought: Interviewing Cesar Chavez

Elected officials, dignitaries, former migrant workers and everyday
people swarm to the Avenida Guadalupe area to pay homage to their
hero, Cesar Chavez. Speakers pay
tribute and share personal stories
of the late civil rights leader with
the crowd before everyone lines up
for the march. The crowd swells to
celebrate the life and contributions
of the life of Cesar Chavez.
As one who has actively participated along with thousands of other
supporters over the years, I began
chronicling the event in photos in
2007.
I have covered various Grand
Marshals such as Paul Chavez,
Cesar’s brother, Dolores Huerta, his
long time companion, and Arturo
Rodriguez, his son-in-law, who
has served twice in the past. Every
year I post the photos on the Walker
Report for all to view.
One of my cherished memories
of Cesar Chavez, whom I met in
1982, was the interview I had with
him while a reporter for KENS-5.
My most striking memory of Cesar Chavez was his calm demeanor.
He spoke softly, respectfully and
articulately. He never raised his
voice. He reminded me of Gandhi.
To this day I can’t recollect how
I was so fortunate to even get the
interview over other seasoned reporters. I was a weekend reporter
who also filled in for vacationing
reporters for a period of about three
months. Whether I interviewed
him on a weekend or during one
of those stints during the week for
others is still a blur. However, I
vividly recall asking him questions
on his mission to protect the farm
workers.
He spoke about the discrimination against field workers who were
taken advantage of in the fields, the
long hours of grueling work and
low compensation. As one who
taught migrant worker’s children
in the late 70s with the Southside
ISD, I was acutely aware of what
he was saying.
Having also worked on a kibbutz
in Israel for one week in 1972 gave
me a taste what it was like to work
in the fields picking apples and to-

protect this precious right,” stated
President Obama. “It broke down
legal barriers at the state level and
at the local level that were keeping
African Americans from exercising
their constitutional right to vote.”
During his address, the President
highlighted the efforts by pioneers
in the movement to make unencumbered voting possible. Despite federal efforts to keep municipalities
from limiting voting to just a white
population, it was a brave few that
aimed to participate.
“All of us have a great debt to
not just John Lewis, but the thousands—many of them unnamed—
who were courageous enough to
walk up and try to register time and
time again, that were threatened
because of their efforts to register…
sharecroppers and maids and ordinary folks,” said President Obama
Yet despite the advances in voting regulations, divisive issues like
the recent voter ID law proposed
in Texas to prevent voter fraud are
still at the forefront. An increasing
number of states have followed the
Lone Star State in requiring voters
to show state or federal identification in order to participate.
The recent decision by the Fifth
Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that
the efforts to require a valid state or
federal issued ID violated the Voting Rights Acts—a win touted by
advocates for African American and
Hispanic voters who are more likely
to be disenfranchised in the process.
As the legal tussle continues,
President Obama publicly decried
those efforts.
“There are still too many ways
in which people are discouraged
from voting. Some of the protections that had been enshrined in the
Voting Rights Act itself have been
weakened as a consequence of court
decisions and interpretations of the
law,” argued the President.
The President stopped short of
claiming legal action was the only
solution, but advocated for reaching
matoes. It was back-breaking work
to say the least. Anyone who tells
you it is not hard work has never
spent time picking in the fields. I
shared my experience with him during the interview. His response to
me was, “Welcome to my world!”
In the 90s I walked a number of
picket lines in solidarity with my
friend Jaime Martinez, who was
instrumental in securing the naming of Cesar Chavez Boulevard and
keeping the name of Cesar Chavez
alive in San Antonio. By then not
much had changed.
To all of those who never met
Cesar Chavez, you missed meeting
a great icon and a man of the people.

federal level, we need a new Voting
Rights Act passed. At the state and
local levels, we’ve got to fight back
against efforts to make it harder to
vote and we got to embrace those
legislators that are prepared to make
it easier to vote.”
On the anniversary of such landmark legislation, the entire Obama
administration echoed the sentiment
that the mission of free and fair elections is still ongoing. Despite recent
statistics that illustrate only 34.6
percent of eligible voters actually
did in 2014, the White House is
still hopeful about the impact of an
amended Voting Rights Act.
“Our task to protect the fundamental right to vote is as critical

today as it was fifty years ago

the Voting Rights Act into law,”
noted Vice President Joe Biden in
a statement.
As the country braces for a primary and general election on both
sides of the aisle, the ability to participate in the democratic process
seems that much more pressing.
Even in staunch conservative states,
the Voting Rights Act is still touted
as a seminal achievement.
“50 years ago, President Lyndon
B. Johnson and Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. challenged us all to look
into our hearts and understand
that it’s wrong to deny our fellow
Americans the right to vote,” said
Texas Democratic Party Chairman
Gilberto Hinojosa. “LBJ, a bold
Texas Democrat, took a stand for
justice and signed the Voting Rights
Act of 1965. The dream of finally
being able to exercise the fundamental right to vote in all corners
of our country became more of a
reality.”

“The [government] is not too
big to shrink. The problem is
the Wall Street to Washington
axis of power that has controlled
the political climate. The donor
class feeds the political class who
does the dance the donor class
wants,” said former Governor
Mike Huckabee.
He was not the only candidate
that took aim at special interests
throughout the night. Candidates
worked hard to prove they were
not in the pockets of some of
Washington’s most powerful
lobby organizations.
On the topic of education, the
candidates debated the merits of a
common core curriculum. Yet the
only advocate publicly was former
Governor Bush.
“I don’t believe the federal
government should be involved in
the creation of standards directly
or indirectly. That is clearly a state

Justin Perkins, an Austin citizen
who lives in a “Fiberhood” signed
up for the service, however, has
not seen any noticeable progress.
In an interview earlier this week
with Austin’s KVUE, he shared
his frustration.
“‘I moved from a city that had
Fiber -- a much smaller city -- so
it’s kind of laughable that it wasn’t
here already,” he said. “We were
told construction was going to
begin in June of this year and I
have seen nothing to indicate that.”
As for San Antonio, Taylor
tried to answer questions about
what part of town will receive the
service first and when construction
would start.
“I dont know what part of town
they are looking at starting first,”
Taylor said. “It’s going to be based
on engineering but we are very
sensitive to the idea that we want
to be available.”
The super fast internet will alter
this, however, it will be a super
slow procedure that could take
years to come to fruition.

San Antonio teens selected for Bank of
America’s Student Leaders Program

Bank of America provides teens
in San Antonio with internship opportunities in recognition of their
efforts made in the community.
Five students from San Antonio
and surrounding areas were selected
to participate in an eight-week paid
summer internship with the Bank of
America Student Leaders Program.
This program is part of Bank of
America’s commitment to help engage and prepare teens for a bright
future and opportunities ahead.
With numbers of unemployed
teens and young adults at a record
high, Bank of America is taking
measures in uniting young people in
educational programs that provide
job and internship opportunities to
prepare them for success in the 21st
century workforce.
Since 2004, Bank of America has
connected 60 teens from San Antonio with summer employment and
has supported 2,200 young people
nationwide through the Student
Leaders Program. Five students
from San Antonio are chosen each
year to participate.
220 high school juniors and
seniors from across the country are
awarded an experience of a lifetimeto network, develop long-lasting
friendships, and learn valuable skills
for life in the workforce.
“Each year we see these students
come in, and they’re impressive and
accomplished, but when they leave
this program, they’re changed. They
are more mature and they have seen
opportunities that they wouldn’t see
working in a fast food restaurant.
The interns have encountered challenges and difficulties, but they
have excellent leadership by their
side to help them through it,” Bank
of America San Antonio President,
Kenny Wilson told La Prensa.
Jocelyn Hernandez and Victoria Gonzalez are two of five San
Antonio area students selected for
Bank of America’s Student Leaders
program, where they worked with
non-profit organizations. Having
faced adversity, social struggles and
bullying, these young ladies used
their tough endeavors as motivation
to work harder to achieve academic
and leadership success. They chose
to rise above their trials and tribulations, and pursue an opportunity that
would impact them for the better.
Victoria Gonzalez recently spoke
with La Prensa to detail her experience with the Student Leaders
Program. In June, Victoria was assigned to work with 13 students at
Montgomery Elementary School’s
STEM summer program. She assisted students in completing STEM
projects and science experiments,
and even went on a few field trips.
“That was my favorite part of the
internship- just being able to work
with the kids, teachers, and coordinators,” Gonzalez admits.
Victoria and the four other students from San Antonio spent the
second half of their internship working with Communities in Schools of
San Antonio. This program is a nonprofit organization that provides a
safe and healthy environment for
at-risk students through educational
and social support services.
In July, all of the student leaders
received an all-expense paid trip to
Washington D.C. for the Student
Leaders Summit. Student leaders
attend workshops, speaking engagements, and group discussion
sessions where they speak with
political leaders and non-profit
organization representatives. In the
time spent at the summit, student
leaders gain better insight on what
is taking place in their communities,
and how they can use their skills and
strengths to make a difference.
“The interns have many opportunities to build their skills. From
learning about poverty, service
projects, being on Capitol Hill and
receiving exposure from political
leaders- they come back and they’re
different. They can’t say enough
about it,” Wilson says.
The student leaders have a chance
to focus on issues that are happening
in their communities; by discussing
these problems with other interns
and political representatives, they
find effective steps and solutions
that result in positive change.
“It was a really great experience.
We heard speakers and authors…
we met with our political representatives, we had tours of the capital, and
we saw monuments. It was a good
opportunity to really brainstorm
with other people who are as driven
and ambitious as I am, to make a
change,” Gonzalez says, “Our motto
is serve, inspire, and change- that
was the theme for the whole week.
It’s great to do well, but you also
have to give back.”
Every opportunity provided with
this program has given Victoria a
better sense of her strengths, and
what she is able to accomplish.
Victoria is proud of her Hispanic
heritage but recognizes the struggles
that minorities face, including access
to quality healthcare and difficulties
that minority women have in breaking cycles of poverty. She is inspired
to create change, and hopes to start
her own scholarship fund and be a
role model for students, reminding
them to be proud of where they
come from.
Victoria shared a powerful message stating, “It’s great to achieve
status and make money but you
should also remember- how can I
use the gifts and talents I have been
blessed with to help others? You
have to have some humanity in all
that you do, and you shouldn’t ever
forget where you came from.”
Victoria Gonzalez will study premed at the University of Texas Rio
Grande Valley – where she received
a full-ride scholarship – and will be
the first person in her family to apply
to medical school. Victoria aspires
to become a pediatric orthopedic
surgeon, bringing quality healthcare
to low socio-economic areas by
starting a health clinic in her own
community as well as traveling the
world through Doctors Without
Borders.

Evitemos tragedias al caminar y textear

Dicen que más vale prevenir que
lamentar. Esto es bastante cierto,
lo puedo asegurar en esta columna
dedicada a la salud. Recientemente,
más bien el Día del Padre, mi esposa e hijos decidieron darme la
sorpresa regalándome un moderno
teléfono celular.
Ese día se me hizo raro que
mi antiguo teléfono no aceptara
llamadas. O cuando intente enviar
un texto se me rechazaba indicándome que temporalmente estaba
fuera de servicio. Tal fue mi cólera
que al reclamarle a la dueña de
mis quincenas ella y los chicos me
entregaron la nueva pieza telefónica
que –según e­llos– yo necesitaba
para poner­me al parejo con lo que
dicta la tecnología moderna.
El mayor de mis hijos, que
recientemente obtuvo diploma
de ingeniero en computación y
ahora comenzara a dar clases en el
prestigiado colegio Texas A&M
recinto San Antonio, se encargó
de darme instrucciones sobre el
funcionamiento del nuevo aparato.
Como quiera que sea, al pasar los
días, yo seguía extrañando mi viejo
teléfono, en el cual tenía ya todo
controlado con datos personales y
un sinfín de números telefónicos
almacenados. Tuve que volver a
archivar todos los datos en el nuevo
sistema, que –a decir verdad– es
más rápido y eficaz que el teléfono
viejito.
Lo único que mi hijo no me
enseñó fue que cuando fuese ca­
minando no chequeara el teléfono.
El sábado 27 de junio al finalizar
la cobertura del partido Stars de San
Antonio y Storm de Seattle, el cual
se jugó a las 7 p.m. en el Coliseo
Freeman y concluyó a las 9:30 de
la noche, al retirarme del legendario
coso un amable empleado de los
que cuidan las puertas de entrada
y salida optó por darme luz verde
para que saliera por un costado del
inmueble, ya que así estaría evitando el conglomerado de fans que
todavía faltaban por abandonar el
edificio que administra el condado
de Bexar y en esta temporada es
la casa del equipo femenil Stars.
Regularmente las Stars tienen
su sede en el AT&T Center, pero
este se encuentra en periodo de
remodelación. Entonces, aproveché
recortar el terreno rumbo al estacio­
namiento donde había dejado mi
unidad automotriz.
A unos cuantos pasos de haber
salido del Coliseo, me adentré a un
área oscura que divide al Coliseo y
al AT&T Center. De pronto sentí
el vibrador del teléfono, por lo
que sin percatarme de la oscuridad
de inmediato lo saqué del bolsillo
para checar la llamada. De repente
sentí tremendo golpe en mi rodilla
izquierda, el cual tuvo efecto en
la mitad de mi cuerpo. Tras recuperar la visión, pude ver que había
impactado a un hidrante (de color
rojo obscuro).
Mi reacción fue de coraje conmigo mismo, ya que por no haber
tenido precaución suficiente me
quede viendo “estrellitas” y de paso
soportando el dolor.
Ya tomando control de mi físico
decidí quedarme un momento
recargado en el hidrante para contestar la llamada, la cual era de un
conocido que me había llamado
para darme datos sobre el primer
aniversario del fallecimiento de
su señora esposa. A mi estimado
conocido le urgía ponerse en contacto conmigo ya que deseaba que
publicara un recordatorio sobre el
legado deportivo que dejó en la
región de El Álamo su esposa.
En fin, le tomé los datos y nos
pusimos de acuerdo para luego
recabar más información.
Le indiqué lo que me había
pasado por haber contestado el teléfono sin darme cuenta del peligro
que acechaba en esos momentos.
Lo mejor de todo fue que no
amerité acudir a la sala de emergencia. Han pasado ya varias
semanas y el dolor persiste. He ido
al quiropráctico y nada. He visitado
al “huesero” y lo mismo. Como
he venido recuperándome es por
una sugerencia de un buen amigo
que dirige una liga en el balompié
regional, quien desde hace años
se encuentra postrado en silla de
ruedas con problemas para caminar.
“Mire, mi Franco, usted cuando
llegue a casa, si es que tiene plantas
de sábila, corte unas cinco pencas
y póngalas en agua hervida (medio
galón) con sal regular. Entonces,
tome una pequeña toalla, sumérjala y luego exprímala, para que
de inmediato se la ponga sobre la
parte donde tiene la lesión. Haga
ese proceso hasta que sienta alivio,
ya que lo que a usted le molesta
son los tendones que se encuentran
inflamados. Con ese remedio le
aseguro que pronto dejará de andar
cojeando”, expresó mi estimado
conocido.
Esta semana comencé el tratamiento y he sentido alivio, cuando
menos ya el dolor de la rodilla desapareció. Ahora lo que me queda
son algunas que otras punzadas en
la parte de la cadera y espalda que
también con el sorpresivo golpe se
resintieron.
En casos como el mío, a diario
sucede ese tipo de accidentes, ello
de acuerdo a estudios realizados
por centros médicos y colegios que
realizan sondeos de salud.
Leyendo uno de esos estudios
aprecié párrafos en los que se
dijo que quienes sufren mayores
daños personales son los que
van texteando o revisando sus

locales). Esto pues impactan contra
muros, paredes, postes de luz, autos
estacionados, contra personas en la
vía pública, pisan piedras que los
vándalos suelen sacar de sitios que
adornan jardines y parques, al bajarse de la banqueta, y hasta se caen
de las escaleras en los interiores de
edificios y casas, etc.
Por lo cual, muchos de ellos han
ameritado ser atendidos en la sala
de emergencia.
Para evitar ese tipo de accidentes
que además son humillantes, los
adultos tenemos que educar­nos y
a la vez hacer lo mismo con los
pequeños y adolescentes, ya que
nosotros somos los que pagaremos
los costos de hospital.
En lo personal creo que apren­dí
bien la lección. De hoy en ade­lante
seré más cuidadoso y me daré
tiempo para checar mi teléfono
siempre y cuando esté en un lugar
seguro y no en la vía pública.

Arian Foster sidelined
by groin surgery
Houston Texans’ running back Arian Foster
underwent surgery this past Friday in Philadelphia. Foster was sixth in the NFL in rushing
with 1,246 rushing yards despite missing three
games. There is no timeframe on how much
time Foster will miss. “We have no idea how
much time he’s going to miss,” Texans head
coach Bill O’Brien said.

Legacies and dynasties are all
sealed with one or two defining
victories. In boxing or MMA,
those fights were Joe Frazier versus Muhammed Ali, Sugar Ray
Leonard versus Tommy Hearns,
and Jose Aldo versus Connor
McGregor.
But for one woman in particular, Ronda Rousey could fight a
couple more fights and still have
an extremely accomplished fighting career or give herself a match
that establishes her mark in sports
history.
Only one fight can prove to
the world that she is the best
female fighter and one of either
sex to ever fight professionally.
The next fight myself and other
fans want to see is Cris “Cyborg”
Justino versus ‘Rowdy’ Ronda
Rousey.
A fight of this magnitude would
sell out any arena and draw millions of viewers online and on
demand around the world. Connor McGregor and Jose Aldo are
pushing for their December clash
to be held at the AT&T Arena in
Dallas, Texas. Rousey has been
pushing UFC to schedule her next
fight on their fight card.
A fight card with these two
history-making championship
fights would definitely bring a
lot of money to the UFC while
also giving the fans what they’ve
been wanting for years. These
two rivalries are just what the
sport needs to gain even more
popularity.
Rousey and Justino are far
from friends. Rousey, in recent
statements, confirmed she would
be willing to fight Justino if she
“drops to 135 (pounds) and stop
taking steroids.” Justino failed a
drug screening a few years before
a fight and has been pushed away
from Rousey ever since.
Now with the UFC having
signed Justino to the fighting
roster the possibility of their fight
is more open than ever. Justino
recently let out a statement saying
she would fight Rousey tomorrow
or whenever, and that it’s the
fight fans have been waiting too
long for. For now, Meisha Tate is
scheduled to again be Rousey’s
opponent. If a Justino and Rousey
fight is scheduled instead, get
ready for some serious girl power.
Boban Marjanović to not
play EuroBasket tournament
San Antonio Spurs center Boban Marjanović
will not play for Serbia in the EuroBasket
tournament this summer due to a left ankle
injury. MRI’s showed that he had “significant bone edema” that “compromises
Marjanović’s ability to play basketball without compromising long-term health and
future injury.” The seven-foot-three center
signed a deal with the Spurs on July 17.
Michael Phelps makes a splash in the Alamo City

Michael Phelps arrived in San
Antonio ready to blow away the
competition at the 2015 Phillips 66
National Championships—not that
the 18-time Olympic gold medalist
has to worry.
The 30 year-old athlete recently
discussed that he was ready to get
back to the pool. The Baltimore,
Maryland native will not be competing in his signature events until
Friday through Monday.
“I was kind of preparing really
for the entire year … I think the
first couple of days that we get here
are the worst because I don’t swim
the first couple of days,” explained
Phelps. “I just sit around and warm
up and I get to watch tomorrow
and its so frustrating because I just
want to swim [and] get to compete
on Friday, which is something I am
excited for.”
He is entered in the 100m and
200m fly, as well as the 200 IM and
200m breast at the 2015 Phillips 66
National Championship. Although
Phelps is not too familiar with the
Alamo City, he said his first visit
to the Northside Swim Center was
impressive to say the least.
“It blows me away to see a high
school pool like this, that’s insane
and incredible. I did a couple of
starts yesterday in the competition
pool, and then warmed up today,”
said Phelps as he went on to discuss
the swim center. “[I] think it’s cool
to just have a stadium type of event
for a swim meet. It’s a small intimate
place, that we are going to get a lot
of noise good for the event.”
A compliment about the facility from a decorated Olympian can
only benefit San Antonio. If it can
operate a state-of-the-art basketball
arena for the Spurs, it can also
provide athletes an opportunity to
compete on various international
stages, including the Olympics and
other national competitions at the
aquatic venue.
This will give the city the opportunity to understand how sports
can be beneficial to the community
financially and otherwise. Athletes
are often synonymous with the
meaning of dedication, leadership,
and even inspiration.
San Antonio, it could be argued,
is safer than the current home of
next year’s Olympic games in Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil. Bob Bowman,
Phelps’ equally renowned coach
and mentor, explained his concerns
about the 2016 Olympics.
“In terms of the water quality in
open water swimming, yes I have
great concerns about it,” explained
Bowman. “I happened to coach a
young lady in 2007 with the PanAm games there and she won a
gold medal in the 10k meters and
came back and has been sick with
life altering illness, they got to do
something about it.”

For both Phelps and Bowman, the
Olympics in Brazil are not the only
concern. They’re worried about the
fact that the U.S. is no longer on top.
Bowman explained it is not as
easy as it once was to be a part of
the U.S. Swim Team.
“I do think the environment is
different…In 2004 it was like an
after thought to be in the final relay
for the U.S., but up to that point the
four people that swam were going
to make it and we didn’t have a lot
of stress on it,” explained the coach.
But the stress started in 2007 when,
“we started to have close calls with
qualifications and other countries
started sending their best people in
the morning and that’s what’s happening and as we move forward.”
Phelps has also gotten serious
about the issue and even reached out
to teammate Ryan Lochte, noting
“you have got to step up… you got
to be a leader.”
Becoming aware of these issues,
Phelps and Bowman plan to make
U.S. Swimming great again. When
asked when he plans to retire, you
could tell the four-time Olympian
was not ready to hang up his goggles
and cap just yet with a dismissive
“who knows.”

create canvas art with his Sprint
Cup Ford Fusion by completing
as many donuts as he could in
a minute.
All of the action was packaged into a high-octane video
and will be launching on the
Pennzoil YouTube page complete with a compelling promotion. “Joey has treated fans
on the track time and time

todo gracias a un “regalo” que

Busch que se quedó con tanque
vacío faltando media vuelta del
final de la carrera.
El regalo también benefició
a Brad Keselowski y Jeff Gordon, que finalizaron segundo y
tercero respectivamente. Kenseth tomó la punta luego de que
Busch, quien estaba en
busca de su cuarta victoria consecutiva se
quedara sin gasolina
a media vuelta de las
160 para terminar la
carrera en la pista de
2.5 millas.
La desmedida administración de combustible de Busch,
quien terminó la
justa en el sitio 21,
lo dejó fuera del Top
30 en la Clasificación
de Pilotos, por lo que

“No hay nada como las victorias”, dijo Kenseth, quien nunca
había ganado en Pocono y consiguió el triunfo 3 de su carrera.
“En 2013 tuvimos muchas victorias estábamos mal acostumbrados. El año pasado no hicimos nada, pero este ya teníamos
la victoria en Bristol. Hemos
estado mucho al frente y me
siento afortunado por estar con
este equipo. Nunca pensé que
podríamos ganar en Pocono,
en una carrera en la que faltó
la gasolina, pero lo hicimos”,

A pesar del resultado en su
contra Busch tomó las cosas con
filosofía. “Es una pena”, dijo.
“Ojalá hubiera ahorrado algo
antes para el final. Me hubiera
gustado saber que el No. 22
(Logano) estaba tan lejos de sus
cálculos. Se quedó muy lejos.
Y es una pena que no pudimos
hacer más”.
Con un mejor resultado el piloto Busch habría asegurado su
puesto en el Chase. “Deberíamos
estar celebrando”, dijo Busch,
quien agregó lo siguiente: “Deberíamos estar celebrando,
fuimos egoístas. No sé cuán
egoístas, pero ahora estamos en
esta posición (a 13 puntos del
Top 30, requerido para entrar al Chase.
Si no hubiera sido por otras
cosas, quizá habíamos parado
a pits a recargar (combustible),
para poder tener un mejor final,
pero lo arriesgamos todo y nos
quedamos un poco cortos, así
que no se puede culpar a nadie
en el equipo”.
Keselowski, quien también se
quedó sin gasolina al cruzar la
meta, se logró recuperar de un
castigo al principio de la carrera
debido a que no entró correctamente a su caja en pits y golpeó
a dos mecánicos, lo que les hizo
perder el control de una llanta.
El Ford No. 2 de Team Penske
cruzó la meta a 9.012 segundos
de Kenseth, por lo que quedó con
sentimientos encontrados al final
de la carrera.
“Lamentablemente fue otras
carrera que no pudimos hacer
todo bien. Tuvimos nuestros
problemas en los pits, pero
pudimos salir del hueco en que
nos metimos”, dijo el campeón
de la Sprint Cup 2012. “Creo
que en el último reinicio a 60
o 60 vueltas (en realidad 63),
arrancamos en el puesto 21 y logramos avanzar seis puestos, con
lo que parecía que íbamos a terminar en el quinto puesto, pero
luego vinieron los problemas de
gasolina y terminamos con un
día favorable. Ciertamente no
donde probablemente íbamos a
terminar sin gasolina, pero por

carreras a los Tecolotes en lo que
fue un partido lleno de acción y
sorpresas sobre el diamante del
estadio Capitol Park, ubicado
en el sector de Bulverde Road y
Thousand Oaks.
De acuerdo al presidente
Gilberto Rodríguez Sr., quien
además es jugador y manager
de Tecolotes, los aguiluchos,
dirigidos por Benito Martínez
y Juan Martínez “Pachín”, este
domingo estarán forzados a
repetir la hazaña derrotando a
Tecolotes en partido pendiente
que fue cancelado por lluvia.
“Si Águilas gana se estará adjudicando su pase al playoff”, dijo
el presidente Rodríguez.

p.m. por lo que Águilas contará

Glimpse of a hidden, blessed life “Pienso que tengo mala suerte”

“So, how long have you been
here, Sister?” My mother and I are
following the monastery’s portress
to the guesthouse, and are thinking
she looks 18.
“Twenty five years.” The diminutive nun answers sweetly.
“Wow- you don’t look like you
could be twenty-five years old!”
“It’s the Lord! It’s such a blessed
life!” Sister Therese beams.
It truly is all about the Lord at
Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery
in Roswell, NM. The life of the
Poor Clare Colettine (P.C.C.) is
consecrated to the King of Kings in
the four vows of Poverty, Chastity,
Obedience, and Enclosure. All are
manifests in their daily lives, which
are concentrated expressions of
what all Christians’ lives are meant
to be in various vocations - devoted
to the love and service of the Lord,
and completely at His disposal.
The simplicity of the monastery’s
design, the sisters’ habits (practical
Tau-cross-shaped brown dresses),
their simple meals (perpetually abstaining from meat), going barefoot
indoors, and their spiritual mother
St. Clare’s commitment to work,
all underscore the commitment to
embrace the “privilege of poverty.”
The sisters do what they can to support themselves in the monastery,
but there is also a beautiful relationship with the secular Roswell
community, where Catholics and
non-Catholics alike support the
sisters.
The next three vows are all critical to their monastery life, but the
one most often misunderstood is
Enclosure. There are varying degrees of enclosure among different
religious communities, but the Poor
Clare Colettines retain “papal enclosure”, which is the “best designed”
to guard “The King’s Rooms”- as
Mother Mary Francis, P.C.C., (late
abbess of the Roswell community),
has referred to the enclosure walls in
her work of the same name.
In this booklet, she explains, “It
is not that the Church asks the Poor
Clares to vow that they will stay
inside, but that the Church honors
their totality of self-donation to
Jesus with the dignity and humbling
glory of a vow to remain in spousal
love inside, - inside the King’s
rooms, where all his people are
gathered and where she can serve
them all. Inside the loved walls that
symbolize the elected enclosure of
the heart and eagerness to obey the
King’s summons,” (68). That is a
teaspoon sampling of the beauty of
enclosure, though it is well worth
reading more of Mother Mary
Francis’ delightful, prolific writings.
Her 1956 nation-wide best-seller,
The Right to be Merry, (the humorous and charming account of
the founding of the Roswell community), has attracted many of the
monastery’s vocations from all over
the world (and was also a trigger for
our own visit). The monastery’s
phenomenal growth has allowed
for the foundation of six other
P.C.C. houses from it. But what
Mother Mary Francis so eloquently
explained about the beauty of enclosure was confirmed by a dozen different sisters there in our parlor talks
with them. In these “colloquiums”,
that seemed perfectly uninhibited
by the separating screen, the sisters
glowed with a joyful inner freedom
that comes from their chosen enclosure and poverty.
The sisters’ chief work for the
Church is chanting the Divine Office, or Liturgy of the Hours. Their
day begins with the first “hour”,
Matins, at 12:30 a.m. The six other
“hours” punctuate the rest of their
day of prayer and work, from 5:15
a.m. to 8:45 p.m. Recreation is
also included in the schedule, so
the sisters can have a time to share
the fruits of their day’s rich silence.
While our visit didn’t take us into
their enclosure and routine, we did
get to share in their prayer times,
(praying on the public’s side of the
chapel), and in their simple meals.
My mother and I were surprised
how sustaining the modest meals
were: coffee and two slices of
home-made bread for the morning
“repast”, midday dinner, which included a bread “wipe” for not wasting any of the soup, and the evening
“collation” (bread and cheese, milk
and cereal, and a handful of their
trees’ pecans).
Even though our time with these
sisters was only a few days, it is
impossible to relate here the fullness
of our experience. You can find a

are beautiful testimonies to the life
of total surrender to Christ to which
each of us is also called.

de que haya perdido tantas cosas
pudiera ser la mala suerte, pero luego

Tampoco pensaban dejar a sus hijos en casa sin nada que comer. Ni
llevaban la intención de hacer cosas
que ni siquiera fueran a recordar el
día siguiente. Pero cuando optaban
por salir a beber, casi siempre iban
a parar en lo mismo.
Seguramente usted tampoco tiene
la intención de ser descuidado o de
no prestar atención. Ni piensa tomar
decisiones que tengan repercusiones
negativas en sus finanzas la semana

perdido sus objetos de valor?
A su Padre celestial le importa
lo que usted ha perdido. Él puede
ayudarle en todos los aspectos de su
vida si tan solo se lo pide”.

not excommunicated and should
not be treated as such,” said Pope
Francis on Wednesday looking
forward to the Synod on the Family
to be held in October.
“People who started a new union
after the defeat of their sacramental
marriage are not at all excommunicated, and they absolutely must not
be treated that way,” Francis told
pilgrims and tourists. “They always
belong to the church.”
The pope issued the direct and
clear message on Wednesday during the general audience held inside
The Vatican, and not on St. Peter’s
Square, as is habitual, due to the
high summer temperatures.
Since the start of his pontificate
in March 2013, Francis has insisted
on compassion and his conviction
that the Catholic Church should
welcome everyone.
This is not the first time that
the former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio has referred to this question,
broaching the matter in June,
when he said that in some cases
the separation “can even be morally necessary” where one of the
spouses is abusive.
However, never before had he
referred publicly and with such
clarity to the situation divorced
people find themselves in with
respect to the Church.

Whether or not divorced people
may receive communion is one of
the most controversial issues within
the Catholic Church.
Francis noted that in his address,
saying that “The church knows well
that such a situation contradicts the
Christian sacrament” of marriage.
But immediately thereafter he
said that “with the heart of a mother
(the Church) seeks the well-being
and the salvation of all, without
excluding anyone. Moved by the
Holy Spirit and by love for the
truth, (the Church) feels the duty to
discern situations clearly, making a
difference between those who have
suffered the separation and whose
who have provoked it.”
“How can we recommend to
parents to do everything they can to
educate their children in Christian
life, giving them an example of
a convinced and practiced faith,
if we keep them at arm’s length
from the community as if they were
excommunicated?” the Argentine
pontiff asked.
“The littlest ones are those who
suffer most ... One should not add
more weight to that which these
little ones are already bearing
when they are in this situation,” he
emphasized.
“Everyone can make up part
of the community ... The Church
has no closed doors to anyone,”
Francis said.

Taco Cabana will begin to
reverse price increases caused by
the massive national egg shortage when it lowers the prices
of its egg-based breakfast tacos
by 10 cents and breakfast
burritos by 20 cents on
Tuesday, August 11.
The company was
able to secure better egg
prices for the foreseeable
future and is passing along the
savings to its guests – an almost
unprecedented move among
restaurant chains that normally
retain price increases once customers become accustomed to
paying more.
“We promised our loyal guests
that the price increases on our
breakfast tacos and burritos
caused by the egg shortage were
temporary, and we are making
good on that,” said Taco Cabana
Chief Operating Officer Todd
Coerver. “We know higher food
prices are a burden – especially
during the expensive back-toschool season – and we want
to give them the relief they
deserve.”
The price reductions will
especially benefit customers
who are fans of Taco Cabana’s
popular Breakfast Taco Box,
featuring a dozen breakfast tacos
of the guests’ choice. The price
of a Breakfast Taco Box will go
down $1.20.

Goodwill San Antonio partners with
Geekdom for free 3-Day Startup

Aspiring entrepreneurs will have
an opportunity to develop their
business ideas into actionable business plans during a free three-day
rapid business startup weekend
sponsored by Goodwill Industries
of San Antonio in partnership
with Geekdom. The application
deadline for 3-Day Business Startup weekend has been extended
through Friday, August 14.
The Catapult Weekend program
starts at noon on Friday, August
21, and ends on the evening of
Sunday, August 23. This event
will take place at the Geekdom
Event Center on the seventh floor
of the Rand Building at 110 East
Houston St. This weekend workshop is limited to 50 people and
open to any types of business, even
non-technology related companies.

In the final week of Spurs
Camp, the young participants
were filled with excitement as
Spurs shooting guard Danny
Green made an appearance at the
George Gervin Youth Center.
Green hosted a “Q and A,”
however, the former North Carolina Tarheel tested the young
ballers basketball IQ’s. Green
asked how well they knew Tarheel basketball as well as Spurs
basketball.
Afterwards, Green played multiple games of knockout with each
of the participants.
Post camp, Green reflected on
the summer and his expectations
for the season.
He wants to start training and
getting back into basketball shape.
He expects most of his teammates
to be there by September.
“I think September, we’ll start
hosting some open gyms,” Green
said. “I’ll be there for sure… last
year most of the guys were trickling in around that time.”
This past summer for the San
Antonio Spurs was not an ordinary one. The Spurs made blockbuster moves during free agency,
acquiring LaMarcus Aldridge,
David West, Ray McCallum and
Jonathan Simmons.
“It is hard to compare it to any
other summer any other organization has ever had,” Green said.
“[The] Spurs organization had a
great summer,”
The Spurs haven’t had a big
man whose presence in the paint
was an issue for opposing teams
since Duncan’s knees were
younger. However, he understands what Aldridge brings to
the table for the silver and black.
“[Lamarcus] brings us a solid
inside presence, offensively and
defensively,” Green said.
West took an $11 million pay
cut to contend for a championship
in San Antonio. Green, who has
a championship, wants to help
him capture one. “David West
took a cut to come here,” Green
said. “We want to reward him for
that to make his decision seem
smarter.”
Green took a pay cut he when
he signed a four year, $40 million
deal. Other teams offered the six
year guard more money, nonetheless, Green decided to stay in the
Alamo City.
“If we win doesn’t matter,” he
said. “I’m pretty sure I’ll be happier than anywhere else for the
extra buck.”
The “dinosaurs” within the
Spurs locker room played a significant role in Green’s decision
and he praised his future Hall of
Fame teammates.
“The old guys are back,” he
said. “We have some bodies that
will help them get through the
season without them having to
play every game, so they can stay
fresh. It is always good to have
the old guys around. That’s one
of the reasons I came back. I like
the old guys.”
Green is entering his seventh
season in the NBA; when asked if
he considers himself an “old guy,”
he responded with a smile, “I’m in
between, so not yet. I’m not trying
to be an old guy just yet.”
With the window closing on
Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili’s
careers, Green recognizes that he
is a part of the future for the Spurs
organization.
“The old guys are not going to
be around for long so try to takeover where they left off. Manu
and I play the same position, If
I could duplicate anywhere near
what he has done here, if I can
do half of it, I consider it a great
career.”
After signing his deal, he still
doesn’t feel any added pressure
individually.
“Not with the team we have,”
Green said. “There’s a lot less
pressure on me with the guys that
we brought in. There’s pressure
every year for the Spurs in general, not just to win, but to do well
and how we’re looked at. We’re
always going to be targeted.”
He adds that the Spurs are used
to high expectations every season.
“We just won a championship
two years ago (one year ago,
2014), and we’re always one of
the top teams in the league, one
of the teams to beat. Especially
with the offseason we had, we
have high expectations, a lot of
pressure on all of us. But it’s nothing new. Since I’ve been here, it’s
been that way.”
Chemistry has defined the
Spurs organization and with many
new faces, this team will have to
mesh well in order to win. Sports
personalities and NBA fans have
already crowned the Spurs the
2016 NBA Champions and Green
expects Coach Gregg Popovich to
put this team in the best position
to win.
“Pop’s great at handling egos
and managing bodies, keeping
guys fresh,” Green said. “He’s
great with that. He’s excellent.
But we still have to get it together,
chemistry-wise. You’ve got to
put it together and it has to work
well, and you also have to stay
healthy.”
The Spurs were a sixth seed and
had an injured Tony Parker who
was a shell of himself in the 2015
playoffs. After getting bounced in
game 7 of the first round, Green
knew how essential it was to stay
healthy and have a top seed in the
playoffs.
“So hopefully we can stay
healthy or get healthy at the right
time, and get the chemistry going
the way we need to going into
playoff time. But we have to be
able to do that early before the
playoffs to make playoffs, and get
a good seeding because that was
important for us this past year.”
Accepted applicants will be notified by August 17.
“With Catapult Weekend, we
want to make entrepreneurship accessible for everyone,” said Sybel
Pici, Board Member and Mission
Committee Chair of Goodwill San
Antonio.
While Geekdom is often associated with technology companies,
the Catapult Weekend will be open
to people with business ideas in a
broad spectrum of industries.
“This will help entrepreneurs leverage technology to develop plans
for a variety of businesses,” added
Marla Jackson, President and CEO
of Goodwill San Antonio.
Based on the “Lean Startup
Method,” the Catapult Weekend will engage participants in a
team-based environment learning
ideation, market validation, business model development, problem
solving, pitch development, and
pitch presentation to entrepreneurs
and investors. While organizers
request participants come prepared
with business ideas, it is also open
to participants who are still formulating ideas.
“The workshop will teach you
everything you need to know to
start a business, focusing on basic
principles that are the key to success for any business startup,”
said Nick Longo, co-founder of
Geekdom.
Prior to the event, Geekdom will
hold an open house for accepted
applicants on what to expect and
how to mentally prepare for the
program to get the most out of it.
Candidates are required to bring
a laptop or iPad/tablet, phone and
materials to take notes.

Two Public Hearings will be held by the City of
San Antonio City Council to receive comments
on the City of San Antonio FY 2016 Proposed
Property Tax Rate and the FY 2016 Proposed
Operating and Capital Budgets. The Public
Hearings will be held on Wednesday, August
19, and Wednesday, September 2, 2015. Both
Hearings will be conducted in the City Council
Chamber, 114 W. Commerce at 6:00 PM.
Residents wishing to speak at the Budget Public Hearings may individually sign a register
for that purpose which will be provided at the
entrance of the City Council Chamber beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19,
and Wednesday, September 2, 2015. Residents also can register on-line Wednesday,

This budget will raise more total property
taxes than last year’s budget by $44,027,644
or 10.27%, and of that amount, $12,579,588
is tax revenue to be raised from new property added to the tax roll this year. Of the
$44,027,644 in added property tax revenue,
$25,217,021 is proposed to be used in the
City’s General Fund to support essential City
services such as Police, Fire, Streets, Parks
& Recreation and Code Enforcement. The remaining $18,810,623 is proposed to be used
for debt service payments on debt issued for
capital projects. These amounts are based
on the City’s proposed Property Tax Rate of
55.827 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.
The City’s FY 2016 Proposed Budget includes
a City Property Tax Rate decrease.

The General Public has arrived in San Antonio

As you enter the relaxed ambi­
ence of The General Public, you
almost get a sense that you are
at home.
Free Range Concepts, a res­
turant group from Dallas, Texas,
decided it was time to open new
doors for San Antonio. Restaura­
teur, Kyle Noonan headed south
with a new concept.
“I love the San Antonio mar­
ket. I think it’s a burgeoning
market, but its still very un­
derserved, and for some reason
many tourists like to go to other
cities in Texas, but I think they
really miss the boat when they
don’t come to San Antonio,”
explained Noonan.
When you go to a restaurant,
you should not only be sur­
rounded by delicious food, you
should also enjoy the atmo­
sphere. The idea behind the new
restaurant came from co-owner
Kyle Noonan one day as he was
flying to San Antonio.
“I was talking to my partner
on the plane ride to San Antonio,
you know it’s something that
I want to appeal to the general
public and that was the light bulb
moment for it, and the idea was
born,” Noonan further explained
about the environment of the
restaurant. “We really wanted to
create a space that became hope­
fully a fabric of the community
of people’s daily lives who are
coming in for lunch or for happy
hour, or dinner or even drinks
late night.”
A diverse menu was made to
be full of color, complement­
ing the shiny new decor. You
can find anything from a bacon
burger to Mama’s Tamale Pie,
made with guajillo and ancho
chicken chili, toasted cumin,
cheddar cheese and cornbread
crust.
However, Noonan explains
that oysters have also made a
big splash with customers at the
restaurant.
“We have sold so many oys­
ters its has been one of our
biggest surprises and I am glad
to see we are getting credit for
going the length of bringing in
oysters all the way from the east
coast. I mean I love Texas prod­
ucts I really do, but Texas Gulf
oysters aren’t as good. They are
big; but they lack the flavor the
east coast oysters have,” dis­
cussed Noonan.
Also keep in mind that if you
have a sweet tooth, The General
Public offers one delicious op­
tion: Birthday Cake. The cake
is filled with white icing, topped
with colorful sprinkles, is rich in
flavor and moist enough to taste

Contest showcases cinema on the go

Forget about the stars and
starlets of the silver screen on
location for months, the 48 Hour
Film Project is more about small
cinema in a two-day window.
The international contest,
started by filmmakers Liz
Langston and Mark Ruppert,
throws down a very specific
gauntlet. Shoot, cut, score and
release a five to seven minute
film in 48 hours.
If that was not hard enough,
contestants literally draw a
genre out of a hat and get to
work.
“In 2001, [Mark] and I were
making movies in Washington
D.C. and he read about a 24
hour play,” said Langston. “We
decided to try and make a movie
in a short time. We thought 48
hours was enough time. We
tried that and expanded that to
friends and that was the birth of
the [contest].”
The challenging format received almost instant buzz by fellow filmmakers, and before long,
the project was off and running at
in numerous cities and eventually
all over the world.
The 48 Hour Film Project
reached a very important milestone when winners from the
various locations got a coveted
invite to Filmapalooza in Los
Angeles. The real prize though
was a chance to have the winning film screened at Cannes
Film Festival in France.
“We had a team that had to
burn down a house and another
one that got a helicopter to
land…We have been fortunate
enough to ride this wave of
filmmaking technology. The
general ability to make movies
has increased exponentially,”
continued Langston.
San Anto Cultural Arts end-ofsummer Chupachanga Block Party

San Anto Cultural Arts will
present its end-of-summer Chupachanga Block Party on Saturday,
August 15, from 11 a.m. to 3
p.m., at its studio-offices, located
at 2120 El Paso Street (at Chupaderas). The event is free and
open to the public. A highlight
of this block party is the making
of large-scale prints, utilizing
a steam-roller. The prints, by
artists Sabrina Alfaro and Juan
Miguel Ramos, will be sold, with
proceeds benefiting San Anto
Cultural Arts’ youth programs.
Sabrina Alfaro, a summer intern at SACA, is entering her
senior year in the BFA program
at UTSA. She is an officer of the
University’s BAT (Bon a Tirer)
Club. Juan Miguel Ramos, a CoFounder of San Anto Cultural
Arts, holds an MFA from UTSA,
and is an educator. His work has
been exhibited locally, regionally,
and nationally.
“I’m very excited to be part of
this wonderful event,” said Alfaro.
“It’s been a great summer at San
Anto, and this is a fun way to
celebrate all we’ve accomplished
the past few weeks.” Ramos added
that these Chupachanga events
“help bring artists and community
members together in a fun and
artful atmosphere.”
The free event is a lively demonstration of San Anto Cultural
Arts’ community-focused mis-
sion. “We’re deeply grateful to
our supporters who understand the
importance of creative expression
and community engagement,”
said Pablo Miguel Martínez,
Executive Director of San Anto
Cultural Arts. Founded in 1993 by
Manuel Castillo, Cruz Ortiz, and
Juan Miguel Ramos as a project
of Inner City Development, San
Anto Cultural Arts became an independent not-for-profit in 1997.
Its two signature programs are
El Placazo Community Newspaper & Mentor Program and
Community Mural & Public Art
Program. The former has published over 200 issues, while the
latter has created 49 murals in
and around San Antonio’s nearWest Side.
Since its inception in 2001,
the contest has screened over
30,000 films with over 900 individual contests held around the
world. More importantly, over
$800,000 dollars in prize money
has been awarded to aspiring
directors.
Among the cities that are usually in the running is San Antonio. Last year’s entry, “Thunder
and Ash” from Atomic Productions, made it to the grand stage
at Filmapalooza.
Sarabeth Pridgen Fox, city
producer for San Antonio, is no
stranger to the emerging cinema
scene in the Alamo City. After
the success of local filmmakers
in last year’s competition, the
bar is getting set very high.
“There are different ways of
approaching it. A team can plan
everything out from the exposition, the conflict and the conclusion. Last year’s winner actually
scheduled every segment of time
so everyone could still sleep,”
said Fox.
While the premise of the
project sounds like an exercise
in time management, it is also
a cathartic pursuit. This year’s
crop of hopefuls includes 30
production teams all undertaking myriad genres.
The culmination of which will
be the official screening of the
entries on Friday, August 26
at the Bijou Cinema located at
4522 Fredericksburg Road.
“Creativity is on the rise in
San Antonio. The art scene has
grown up wildly in the past few
years. The development of the
city is making the city more
culturally mature and there are
more places to learn about film,”
concluded Fox.
As the festival grows exponentially, the Alamo City is
poised to cement its reputation
as a cinema city on the rise…

Lonely Horse releases
‘Desert Sons’ album

Last weekend, fans of San Antonio’s “Lonely Horse” packed
into The Phantom Room to send
the desert rock duo off as they
kicked off their tour to promote
their new album, “Desert Sons.”
In true Lonely Horse fashion,
Travis Hild and Nick Long have
no trouble bouncing back improvisational beats and riffs as
the two have an unmatched repertoire that makes every Lonely
Horse show a truly unique experience.
The anticipated “Desert Sons”
album was released on August 1,
after a year and a half of working on it and includes 13 tracks.
This album captured a much
louder soul that is embodied by
the bluesy voice and screaming
guitar of Long and the deep bass
and percussion skills that Hild
provides.
La Prensa caught up with Long
as he was leaving their New Orleans leg of their tour.
“It feels great to have it out
finally… and relieved to finally
move on from that part of my
life,” Long explained. “Those
songs came from a really dark
place in my life. Those songs
got me through but I think from
the time we recorded them till
now I’ve outgrown them. I’ve
changed and am a better man for
it. It took us three days to record
it and almost two unnecessary
years to get it out.”
Songs can range from Black
Angels-esque dark psychedelic
undertones like on track “And
the Number 3” to full on Jimi
Hendrix vibes like on the track
“Woman!” Apart from the blues
brought on by emotional relationship issues, “Desert Sons”
also strongly touches on important social and racial issues that
are happening across the country
that can be found on tracks such
as “Red People,” “White White
People” and “Black People.”
Long said that his favorite
song off the album is “Te Toca
a Ti me Mata.”
The songs starts off very tranquil with deep riffs and slides
that remind one of the calm
before the storm before it transitions completely (much like “A
Day in the Life” by the Beatles)
into a faster, delirious tempo as
Nick’s vox echo throughout to
match the furious drum beats
and guitar that ends with the distorted tinkling of a jewelry box.
A reoccurring theme in the
album is the number three with
tracks titled “And the number 3”
and “There will never be a Number 3,” in which Long explained
was an embodiment between his
ex-wife, himself and his son.
“There was three of us and at a
time it was perfect. My son was
the most powerful of us all. He
being my third meant so much to
me,” he continued.
And as for the tour, the duo

Magazine reported Thursday.
Guests who attended the wedding were told it was a birthday

the celebrity on Twitter.
The tweet was accompanied
by the selfie, which had a
smiling Clinton and a partially
visible Kardashian.

EFE - Only 4.9 percent of characters in the top 100 movies in the
U.S. in 2014 were Hispanics, according to the latest annual report
on diversity in cinema, published
Wednesday by the University of
Southern California’s Annenberg
School for Communication and
Journalism.
The percentage of Hispanic
actors remained unchanged from
2013 but the number of AfricanAmerican characters in movies
dropped to 12.5 percent in 2014
from 14.1 percent a year earlier,
while the percentage of Asians rose
to 5.3 percent from 4.4 percent.
The data shows Whites continue
to overwhelmingly dominate Hollywood.
Some 73.1 percent of the characters in the top 100 films of 2014
were White, one percent lower than
in 2013.
The biggest jump was seen in
Middle Eastern, American Indian/
Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian/
Pacific Islander characters or those
from mixed racial/ethnic heritages
that went up from 2.5 percent in
2013 to 4.2 percent in 2014.
“In light of these real world percentages, Hispanic/Latino characters on screen in film continue to be
the most under-represented ethnic
group. This is surprising given that
Hispanics purchased 23 percent of
U.S. movie tickets in 2014,” the
report said.
Further according to the report,
only 17 of last year’s 100 mostwatched films had a lead or co-lead
actor from a racial and/or ethnic
group, of which 47 percent were
blacks, 29.4 percent were from
mixed racial/ethnic heritages, 11.8
percent were Asian.
Hispanics trailed the list with the
same percentage as Asians.
The report points out although
Whites form a demographic majority in the U.S., Hispanics comprised
17.1 percent of the population,
African-Americans 13.2 percent
and Asians 5.3 percent, according
to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The report also showed the highest percentage of Hispanic women
were shown in sexually revealing
attires in films (30.6 percent),
followed by Black women at 29
percent, White at 27.5 percent and
Asian at 25.7 percent.
This is a surprise finding given
white females were more likely
to be referenced as physically attractive in comparison to Hispanic
or black women, according to the
report.
In 2014, only 28.1 percent of
speaking characters in the 700 topgrossing films were women while
there were only 19 Gay, Lesbian or
Bisexual characters across the 100
top films of 2014.

Laurie Auditorium this October
as part of their farewell tour. They
will grace the Laurie Auditorium’s
stage this October.
The group, which has been touring the globe in different forms,
guises and combinations since
1997, will take to the road one final
time to celebrate the Orquesta’s
storied journey as ambassadors for
Cuban music.
The Orquesta Buena Vista
Social Club grew out of the 1997
release of the Grammy-winning
and best-selling album, “Buena
Vista Social Club.”
Its lineup includes a number of
the original artists featured on the
landmark recording and film. Over
the years, there have been further acclaimed albums, Grammy
awards and a packed schedule of
sold out tours and concerts.
The “Adiós Tour” represents
the distillation of more than a
thousand shows over 16 years,
involving more than 40 musicians. During that time, the group
has evolved into a customized,
dynamic and multi-generational
band.
Under the musical direction of
band leader and trombonist Jesús
Aguaje Ramos, the lineup for the
“Adiós Tour” will feature several
of those who played on the original
“Buena Vista Social Club” album
and film, including Cowboyhatted singer/guitarist Eliades

stage adaptation of “Don Quixote” from sister-city Chennai,

a timeless tale with universal

Director and Choreographer
Sheejith Krishna studied and
taught at India’s prestigious
Kalakshetra Foundation.
He went on to perform the
roles of Rama and Ravana (divine hero and demonic villain)
in Kalakshetra Repertory’s
monumental six-part epic “Ramayana.”
In 2007, Krishna choreographed for the Kalakshetra
Repertory “Masquerade,” a
Bharatanatyam adaptation of
Alexandre Dumas’ “Man in the
Iron Mask.” He has also choreographed the dance sequences
for Ang Lee’s Academy Award-

classical approach and keenness

Ricardo Montaner estrena video de The new sound “Movimiento”

Ricardo Montaner, el cantautor venezolano, está de vuelta.
Y recién este viernes lanzó el
video de su nueva canción “Se
desesperaba (El carrito azul”),
el cual es el tercer sencillo de
su álbum “Agradecido”.
El nuevo video está realizado
con la técnica de dibujos anima-
dos al ritmo de la bachata.
“La verdad es que imagino
todo menos esta maravilla…
la idea de Marlene me pareció
un salto hacia adelante ya que
jamás hice algo así. La animación es extraordinaria y no
me extrañaría que se convirtiera
en un video referencial entre
los más de 70 que he hecho”,
expresó el intérprete del famoso
tema “La cima del cielo”.
El video está dirigido por la
cineasta Marlene Rodríguez
Miranda. La animación obedece
a Melisa Arbelaez y la dirección de fotografía a Francisco
Páez.
En la canción (letra de Montaner) y música del músico
venezolano Yasmil Marrufo,
el cantante narra la historia de
una pareja donde el desenlace

Mexican singer-songwriter
Julio Reyes performed live in
New York last month at The
Bowery Electric for the BMI
“Verano Alternativo” showcase
as a kickoff to the Latin Alternative Music Conference.
This was the first of many
opportunities for Julio Reyes
to present the live experience
of Regional Alternativo, which
fuses several traditional Mexican genres (Banda and Ranchera) with Soul y R&B sounds.
He fired up the crowd and had
everyone dancing with a set that
included his most recent single
“Me Canse de Rogarte” and his
collaboration with the feisty
singer-songwriter Amandititita
on the single “Y Cuando Nadie
Te Quiera.”
In 2012 Julio left his mark
on the Regional Mexican genre
with his first album “No Inventes,” released under Sony
Music, which had hit singles
like “No Inventes” and “Recompensa” featured on Billboard
magazine.
His love for both Ranchera
and R&B music led Julio to
concoct this musical movement
Regional Alternativo with the
talented and Latin Grammywinning musician and producer
Ulises Lozano (Kinky).
With musical arrangements
he enlisted the help and influence of Maurilio Pineda (Voz
de Mando). This musical movement is also possible because of
incredibly generous collaborations with Gloria Trevi, La
Santa Cecilia, Chiquis Rivera,
Amandititita and the several
other guest surprises to come.
