Rite of Acceptance
The parish will celebrate the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens on Wednesday, October 15 at
7:00pm. This rite formally acknowledges and welcomes those children above the age of seven who are
preparing to receive the Sacraments of Christian Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist.
Through the Rite of Acceptance, those preparing to receive these three sacraments will become
“catechumens” (literally, “hearers”) of the Word of God.
The Rite of Acceptance is not a Mass but rather a Liturgy of the Word followed by the giving of the Sign of
the Cross and intercessions for the catechumens. All parishioners are welcome to attend, in order to
support those preparing to enter the Church at Easter.
Rosary
October is the month dedicated to the Holy Rosary. This tradition is based on the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary
(October 7). (Pope St. Pius V established this feast to commemorate the victory won by Christian forces over
the Ottoman Empire at Lepanto [1571], which was obtained by beseeching the Virgin Mary’s help through the
Rosary.) Throughout October, the Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes before Mass (beginning at 4:40pm on
Saturday and at 8:40am on Sunday). Parishioners are encouraged to arrive early in order to recite the Rosary,
and to sign up to lead the Rosary. In addition, the Salve, Regina (Hail, Holy Queen) will be sung at all Masses
during October.
Rosary Congress 2014: Mary Mother of the Church Abbey at 12829 River Road, Goochland, Virginia will
host the 19th Annual Rosary Congress on Friday, October 17: 6pm Divine Mercy talk; 7:30pm Mass; all night adoration.
Saturday, October 18: 8:30 am registration; 9:00 am Rosary; 9:30am Mass. Divine Mercy talks throughout the day; 4:30pm
Holy Hour with Vespers and Benediction. Featured speaker will be Father Dan Cambra, MIC, Director of the Marian
Evangelization Team. Topics will focus on Divine Mercy. Admission is free. Lunch is available for $7.To reserve lunch call:

2014 Annual Diocesan Appeal: Our Faith Alive in Love
If you made a pledge to the 2014 Appeal, the Diocese has begun sending reminders so you can fulfill
your pledge. Please note that if you chose an auto-debit off your checking account or credit card,
you will not receive a reminder. It is important for all of our parishioners to complete their pledges.
The assistance that is provided to the ministries and programs the Appeal supports, such as grants to
our mission parishes, heating and grocery assistance to families, health insurance for our retired priests
and tuition for our future priests to attend the seminary, is based on what is collected. In addition, all
parishes receive back a portion of their amounts collected. This means the more we collect, the
more we can address our important parish needs. Thank you for your continued support of the important ministries
and programs that are made possible due to your generosity to the Annual Appeal.
Tabernacle
A special collection will be taken up on the weekend of November 7–8 for the purchase of a new tabernacle, which will
be placed in the sanctuary of the church. The goal is to raise $15,000. (The tabernacle costs $50,000;
$35,000 has already been collected.) My hope is that each household in the parish will make a
contribution, according to their means, as an expression of love for the Holy Eucharist. By having a new,
larger tabernacle in the church, parishioners will have greater access to the Real Presence of Christ. This
is a most exciting time for the parish! —Fr. Tony
Men’s Prayer Breakfast
All men of the parish are invited to attend a Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, October 25 from 8:30 to 10:30am in
the commons. The morning will include a continental breakfast, a talk, the opportunity to receive the
Sacrament of Penance, and Solemn Exposition of the Holy Eucharist. This event is sponsored by the Knights of
Columbus but is open to all men of the parish.
K of C Memorial Mass
The 9:00am Mass on Sunday, October 19 will be offered for the repose of the souls of the deceased
members of the Knights of Columbus. Following the Rosary, the current Third- and Fourth Degree members of
the Knights will process into the church 8:55am, lead by a bagpiper, so that Mass can promptly begin at
9:00am. All knights and their wives are urged to arrive in the commons at 8:30am for the procession.
SHS Fall Fling
Sacred Heart School will hold its annual Fall Fling on Saturday October 25 from 12n to 3:00pm. There
will be activities for children and adults including a basket booth and silent auction. Brunswick stew will
be sold by the quart for $6 and tickets for the stew can be purchased in advance from the school office.
Additionally, tickets for plates are available for $5 each and you have your choice of grilled cheese, stew
and a drink—or—2 hot dogs chips and a drink. This event if fun for the whole family so plan to attend
and support our school.

MINISTERIO HISPANO
XXVIII DOMINGO ORDINARIO
Día 12 de octubre de 2014
Sagrario

THE LORICA OF ST. PATRICK
I arise today, through God’s strength to pilot me: against snares of devils, against temptations of vices, against inclinations of nature.
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ in breadth, Christ in length, Christ in height, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of every man who
speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.

Traditionally, a lorica is a prayer for protection. In Latin, lorica meant armor or breastplate. Knights would place inscriptions or prayers
on their shields or armor to recite before going into battle.
*This is an abbreviated version of this powerful prayer. It’s an ideal morning prayer.
