This rite formally acknowledges and welcomes those children above the age of seven who are preparing to receive the Sacraments of Christian Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. Through the Rite of Acceptance, those preparing to receive these three sacraments will become “catechumens” (literally, “hearers”) of the Word of God. The Rite of Acceptance is not a Mass but rather a Liturgy of the Word followed by the giving of the Sign of the Cross and intercessions for the catechumens. All parishioners are welcome to attend, in order to support those preparing to enter the Church at Easter. Rosary October is the month dedicated to the Holy Rosary. This tradition is based on the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7). (Pope St. Pius V established this feast to commemorate the victory won by Christian forces over the Ottoman Empire at Lepanto [1571], which was obtained by beseeching the Virgin Mary’s help through the Rosary.) Throughout October, the Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes before Mass (beginning at 4:40pm on Saturday and at 8:40am on Sunday). Parishioners are encouraged to arrive early in order to recite the Rosary, and to sign up to lead the Rosary. In addition, the Salve, Regina (Hail, Holy Queen) will be sung at all Masses during October. Please note that if you chose an auto-debit off your checking account or credit card, you will not receive a reminder. It is important for all of our parishioners to complete their pledges. The assistance that is provided to the ministries and programs the Appeal supports, such as grants to our mission parishes, heating and grocery assistance to families, health insurance for our retired priests and tuition for our future priests to attend the seminary, is based on what is collected. In addition, all parishes receive back a portion of their amounts collected. This means the more we collect, the more we can address our important parish needs. Thank you for your continued support of the important ministries and programs that are made possible due to your generosity to the Annual Appeal. Tabernacle A special collection will be taken up on the weekend of November 7–8 for the purchase of a new tabernacle, which will be placed in the sanctuary of the church. The goal is to raise $15,000. (The tabernacle costs $50,000; $35,000 has already been collected.) My hope is that each household in the parish will make a contribution, according to their means, as an expression of love for the Holy Eucharist. By having a new, larger tabernacle in the church, parishioners will have greater access to the Real Presence of Christ. This is a most exciting time for the parish! —Fr. Tony Men’s Prayer Breakfast All men of the parish are invited to attend a Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, October 25 from 8:30 to 10:30am in the commons. The morning will include a continental breakfast, a talk, the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Penance, and Solemn Exposition of the Holy Eucharist.
