This is the new logo of The Church of Holy Apostles which was designed by our talented parish member, Melodie Harding, to whom we are most grateful. I have worked this through the Pastoral Council, Hope & Gratitude Committee and our leadership, so that we have a symbol that has an active meaning .We are unveiling it as we begin the new liturgical year. The bell tower was the center of where people went for a long time. Once the church was built, the center moved. It has served the parish well, but now it is time to move forward. We will begin to filter this new brand into all our communication outlets. As we look to the future, it is helpful to have a symbol, logo or brand that has an active meaning which illustrates an outgrowth of our faith that leads us to do something that makes a difference in the world. The open, upturned hand is both welcoming and ready to serve by extending Christ’s love (the cross) to others, offering new life and growth (the tree) for all who follow Him. Compassion is the word everyone comes back to here. This symbol shows our hand reaching out to others in need and to help those suffering different crosses, which leads to all of us growing in faith toward Jesus. It will take a little time to catch on, but I believe if a stranger looks at it, they will get a meaningful impression of what we are about here. It is about reaching out and sharing our faith. The cross is our central symbol of faith and the Crucifix in the church is a central focus. Many meanings I hope will come from this and guide our mission in the future. Have a Blessed Week and Advent! November 29, 2015 Help free our parish of the debt “anchor!” Make your pledge today! Go to thechurchofholyapostles.org—click on Anchors Aweigh! “Be Together” This Advent Our parish theme this year is “Build up the Kingdom. We are not just called to be passive consumers of our faith, but to live it. We strive not to just “do” church but to “be” church. And we become church not just in “my” church but in “our” church, as a community, as one family around the table of the Lord, that then goes out and builds up the Kingdom in the world around us. Advent is the time of waiting and preparation for the coming of the Lord. On the dark side of our technologically obsessed world, we are not used to waiting, but to instant gratification. When Advent starts we will have been hearing Christmas carols on the media and in stores for a month already! So we must consciously create space in our lives of pregnant waiting for Christ at Christmas, preparing ourselves internally as a people. On the positive side, we live in a world of instant connection to others. Our community may be far flung across the globe today, but we stay in instantaneous contact with each other through our technology. We are all about “connection.” So this Advent, we will focus on connection, on being together, on building up the Kingdom in preparation for the coming of our Savior at Christmas, and His return again at the end of time when we will all be gathered up lovingly into the eternal Kingdom of God. We are one community, building up the Kingdom, together! First Sunday of Advent: Connect Together The first week of Advent is always about recognizing and mending our ways in preparation for the Lord coming to his people. Jesus is coming, and we better by ready! We cannot do this on our own: we must come together as Church. This is very counter-cultural in our world, which values independence and choice so highly. There is nothing wrong with those qualities except when we have the vanity to think we can “do it all on our own.” When we make the choice to connect with one another and be part of something greater than ourselves as families, communities and churches sharing faith in Jesus Christ, we learn that we no longer have to be alone. Jesus is coming for all of us. Our Creator is so engaged in our history that he will become human. Let us connect together and connect with Christ, and build the Kingdom. Las Posadas (Spanish for “The Inns”) is a nine-day celebration with origins in Mexico that begins on December 16 and ends December 24. It is a tradition for many Catholic Mexicans and other Hispanics that symbolizes the trials that Mary and Joseph endured before finding a place to stay and where Jesus would be born. Everyone is invited to take part in this tradition, which will be held from 6 to 9 PM on Sunday, December 20, Tuesday, December 22, and Wednesday, December 23, from 6 to 9 PM. The evening includes praying of the Rosary, reading Scriptures, re-enactment of Joseph’s search for room at the inn and singing of Christmas carols called villancicos. The evening ends with a celebration of festive foods and playing the piñata game for children. Make it an Advent tradition for your family! Congratulations Franz Varga Parish member and Northern Illinois University student Franz Varga arrived at the top spot of the Bloomberg Aptitude Test in business and finance (BAT) with an outstanding performance on the September 2015 exam, paving the way for this senior finance and economics double major to tie with one other person for best in the world. What an amazing accomplishment! Helping Hands Are Needed We are all so busy that we sometimes feel we have no time to participate in any ministries at Holy Apostles, but here we offer the opportunity of a valuable yet not time-consuming ministry: be a “helping hand.” We have many people in the parish who are at various times in need of help. A nice home-cooked meal, a cake or cookies, a ride to church or to the store would be so appreciated by them. Would you be willing to volunteer to help on an as-needed basis for the homebound or for special events at church? Contact Jeanne Fraser, Pastoral Care, 815-385-5673, x 224, or [email protected]. Haircuts will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. (space is limited. Haircuts will be done by licensed cosmetologist volunteer. All participants MUST come in with washed hair. Hair can be wet or dry. Stylists will spray hair with water for a wet cut or they may choose to dry cut the hair. No styling after the cut will be offered. No reservations taken. Participants must sign a waiver to receive services and release liability of services rendered. Seeking Information Center Volunteers Do you regularly attend the 5 PM Mass on either Saturday or Sunday? Our Information Center Ministry is currently in need of volunteers to staff the Center, especially for these two Masses. No special skills are required and training is provided. The time commitment is very minimal—one evening Mass per month for about 15 to 20 minutes before and after Mass. If you are interested in sharing your time and talent in this way, please contact Peggy MacGregor at 815-728-0860 or [email protected]. Please Let Us Know Where You Are If you are homebound, in the hospital, in a nursing home or a rehab unit, please let us know. We try to keep track of everyone as they move from one location to another but sometimes we lose contact. If you have not heard from someone at Holy Apostles in a while, it may be because we don’t know were you are. There are people who can come visit you, bring you Communion or bring you meals. If you would like contact from your parish, call Jeanne Fraser, 815-385-5673, ext. 224 or [email protected]. Advertiser of the Week We wish to thank the business people who use our bulletin for advertising their products and services. Our advertisers make it possible for Holy Apostles to provide our weekly bulletin to you AT NO COST TO THE PARISH. Please patronize our advertisers. This week we especially thank: Delight in Living Ltd. “Asking for help is wisdom; not weakness.” Linda Gullo, Counselor 815-459-5161 Contact Jeff Tkachuk of LPI Publications at 1-800-950-9952, Ext. 2513 or [email protected] to place an ad.
