Edward Allen, Bishop of Mobile August 12, 1921 Vincentians Reflections: Jesus sends the apostles out on mission, two by two. His instructions indicate that they are to stay focused on what they are to do. Everything they would do originates in Jesus and the power to stay focused on the mission and be successful comes only from Jesus who sent them. When disciples are sent on mission it is to take up the mission of Jesus, and there is only one mission, to establish God’s reign. Like Jesus, disciples will meet resistance but they will also meet success when they encounter those with faith. It is an awesome thought that Jesus entrusts his mission to us. With our own power and talent we can do little; with the authority with which Jesus invests his disciples we can do much. (Living Liturgy, p.170) SENT BY GOD In Amos’ time the vocation of prophet had achieved a very formal status in Israel. The prophets had arisen, originally, to act as God’s voice when Israel was no longer led by the spiritual/civil figures known as “judges,” but by monarchs. Over time, the monarchy had appropriated the offices of priest and prophet, established them into companies, and reserved the right to appoint courtly prophets. Then, as now, when those in power also got to choose who would act as their official conscience, things sometimes went awry. At such times, God raised up prophets from unlikely places, and this is how Amos received his vocation as prophet. In last week’s Gospel we heard how Jesus was raised up as God’s anointed from a place many viewed as unlikely. As we continue to discern our own vocation as baptized disciples, we can be assured that we are, in Paul’s words, “chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his Copyright © J. Re-printed from: One Voice Bicentennial Special July 2, 1976 GUNTERSVILLE — A Catholic Mission was opened in an office building owned by Dr. Edward Venning, in July, 1949, to accommodate the many vacationers who came to the Guntersville Lake area for boating and fishing. Bishop Toolen placed the Mission under the care of St. James Parish, Gadsden. Rev. James B. Wathen was pastor. Mass was celebrated here every Sunday, with the assistance of Rev. Casimir (Father Charlie) Chichanowicz, S.S.E. pastor of St. Martin dePorres Parish, Gadsden. Benedictine Father from Cullman also assisted here. Father Luke Fazi, O.S.B., offered the first Mass celebrated in Guntersville. As the membership grew parishioners of St. William’s Mission sought ways to secure a permanent church. With the approval of Bishop Toolen and the assistance of Terence Mackin, Jr., and other parishioners, Fr. Wathen purchased an old vacated Baptist Church building. The Bishop started the fund drive with $1000; the Catholic Church Extension Society gave $10,000, the remainder of the $23,500 was raised by the congregation and friends. The building was bought in the winter of 1951 and as there was no heat, Mass was not offered there until the Spring of 1952. In the purchase an educational building was included. Bishop Fulton J. Sheen donated the marble altar. After being renovated, redecorated and suitably furnished to be used as a Catholic Church the dedication took place on April 5, 1954 with Bishop Toolen officiating. Father Walthen was celebrant of the Mass, assisted by Rev. Vincent O’Reilly, S.S.E., current pastor of St. Martin dePorres, Gadsden, Rev. Casimir Cichanowicz preached the sermon. There were about forty families in the area at this time. The Mission was raised to the status of a parish when Rev. Paul Mullaney was appointed resident pastor in May, 1959. He was also Diocesan Director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Rev. Owen Connaughton appointed pastor on June 16, 1961. He remained until November 5, 1964 when he was succeeded by Rev. Joseph Cecil Gill. Rev. Patrick Murphy was appointed pastor on August 22, 1968. The church which would seat 200 persons became obsolete and through the inspiration and direction of Fr. Murphy a beautiful new edifice was erected. The Diocesan Holy Name Chapel Fund aided in the building of the new church. The Most Rev. Joseph G. Vath, D.D.., Bishop of Birmingham in Alabama dedicated the beautiful brick and stone structure on March 4, 1973. Concelebrating the Mass were Bishop Vath, Right Rev. Hilary Dreaper, O.S.B., Abbot of Saint Bernard Abbey, Cullman; Father Murphy, pastor; Father Wathen, pastor of Holy Spirit Parish Huntsville; Father Gill, pastor of St. Catherine Parish, Mobile; Rev. John P. O’Brien, pastor of St. Paul Parish, Athens. Rev. Paul Donnelly, pastor of Our Lady Queen of the Universe Parish, Huntsville was master of ceremonies. Lectors were Jerome Raispis, Scottsboro and Kenneth Harvey of Guntersville. Frank Beuerlein, Birmingham, headed the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Honor Guard.
