JOSEPH CHURCH SONG BOARDS We thank Joe and Cathy Keenan for providing the two new song boards at St. Joseph Church. Joe designed and built the boards with wood recovered from the old St. Joseph’s Church and he engineered the system to raise and lower them. Cathy completed the project by staining and sealing all the wood. In the past, Joe and Cathy have built and finished the benches in the gathering space and the processional cross and candles also from wood recovered from the old St. Joseph Church. We are grateful for the gift of their talents and time so generously shared with our parish community. In your observance of the commandments of the LORD, your God, which I enjoin upon you, you shall not add to what I command you nor subtract from it. Observe them carefully, for thus will you give evidence of your wisdom and intelligence to the nations, who will hear of all these statutes and say, ‘This great nation is truly a wise and intelligent people.’ For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the LORD, our God, is to us whenever we call upon him? Or what great nation has statutes and decrees that are as just as this whole law which I am setting before you today?” Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 15:2-3, 3-4, 4-5 Second Reading: James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 Dearest brothers and sisters: All good giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by change. He willed to give us birth by the word of truth that we may be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls. Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world. Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. —For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands, keeping the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. —So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, “Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?” He responded, “Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts. You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.” He summoned the crowd again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile. “From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile.” Stewardship Esquina de Administración The final financial results are in for our 2015 parish carnival. When all is “said and done,” I’m pleased to report that we netted ~ $85k. We continued our recordbreaking trend! For perspective, just a few years ago, we netted ~$51k from our 2012 carnival. So for context, that’s about a 67% increase from that point in time. Every year I report that just when we thought it not possible to top the previous year’s success, we do! This is the biggest fund raising event for our parish annually and was accomplished through the literally “thousands” of hours of stewardship effort and contribution of time, talent, and treasure. Special thanks to all of those involved, especially our fantastic Carnival Committee as without their dedication and relentless coordination efforts, this would not be possible. CARNIVAL 2015 – THANK YOU AND FINAL RESULTS We wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the volunteers, parishioners, neighbors, and friends who came out and helped make for a very successful year for the Parish Carnival. The weather was just about perfect, and we did not lose a day. As a result, we are happy to report a total of $85,000.00 net profit from this year’s Carnival. (This is an increase over last year’s total profit of $74,875.00.) We would like to welcome Stephanie Szczerba from Saint Rose who joined our general committee as a co-chair. She also gave her time and talent where ever it was needed, and was an inspiration - willing to tackle anything that needed to be done. We also had Father Brady, our new associate pastor, volunteer this year. We hope you enjoyed our event, and thank you for all your help. Unfortunately, we had a very important volunteer for the carnival missing this year - Pat Sparks we hope to have you back soon, we all missed you and we continue to pray for a speedy recovery. Our Carnival Chairs and Co-Chairs, and our entire Parish, have much to be proud of as we have turned this event into a tradition for the entire MOT community. Everyone works very hard to make sure that the event runs flawlessly. The success of our Carnival would not be possible without everyone’s participation and dedication. Thank you all for being part of this tradition. One of the most dedicated in our group is Kevin Corcoran. His dedication is not just to the Carnival, but to our many parish activities. He spends endless hours making sure that everything is perfect, the home cooked meals at the carnival, the Knights of Columbus breakfast, and the community events that the Knights of Columbus are a part of - just to name a few. No one works harder than Kevin and we want to say thank you - we could not have the success that we enjoy without you. Mark Winterbottom, the parish’s youth ministry coordinator, did an outstanding job from pre-carnival to the last night. We are seeing many of the Parish children coming back and now participating as young adults. We appreciate their parents’ cooperation and support with getting their children to the parish and working side by side with everyone. The support of these young adults is key to allowing our largest fund raiser to grow. And a special thank you to Sarah Czerniak, and Amanda Reese for all your efforts in the past, and again this year. Our Knights of Columbus are always outstanding. It’s such a comfort knowing that the Knights are always able and willing to help in any way possible. They are truly an inspiration to our parish. We thank them not just for all the equipment that is shared with us, but more importantly for their continued support of the Carnival and our parish. We were fortunate once again to have John O’Neill and John Sanders, and their friends, musical talent donated to us for our enjoyment on our closing night - as they have done for many years. What better way to close our carnival then having our own parishioners on the entertainment stage supporting our largest fund raiser. We are truly blessed to have them as members of our parish. And a special thanks to our Parish staff – including Father Kelley, Father Brady, Jackie Delaporte, Pat Sparks, Bob Altmiller, Dick McAloon, Mary Vawter and Mark Winterbottom, for all their efforts during Carnival week. They often spend their full day at work, then stay until late at night. Many of the parish staff also either chair or co-chair segments of our Carnival, and they are all a very large part of our success. Again, to everyone, a heartfelt thank you for all your support of our Parish Carnival again this year. Carnival Chairs - Dominic Marra and Jake Vukich A Special Thanks to Our 2015 Carnival Committee Chairs and Co-Chairs Phil Czerniak, Bob Altmiller and Dave Burns Mary Vawter and Cookie Bush Kevin Corcoran, Shelly DiPietrapaul, Pat Sparks, Mary Kay Waltemire, and Mark Winterbottom Marla Dill-Palmer, Jill Dietrich, Stephanie Szczerba Terry Fresconi, Sarah Czerniak, Amanda Reese Jeanine Gerrick, Mark Newsome, Maria Picard and Amber Picard Jim Headly, Scott Kovalevich Joan Huhn and Andrew McMullen Terry Kovalevich Janice Vukich and Mary Lou Boyell Gene Bloemker and Jaime Churchill “OUTSTANDING JOB !!!!!!! Francis Malooly, Bishop of Wilmington, has designated Monday evening, September 21st, 2015 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM as a Holy Hour, uniting the diocese “…in prayer for our Holy Father, for the success of the World Meeting of Families Conference, and for the needs of our individual and parish families on the eve of the Pope’s arrival in the United States.” All religious education classes and ministry activities are to be cancelled that night in order for our families to participate in the Holy Hour. Due to the Holy Hour, our Reconciliation Parent Gathering originally scheduled for Monday, September 21st is re-scheduled for Monday evening, September 14th, 2015 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM in the Parish. MUSIC MINISTRY NEWS The Contemporary Choir is a family of “friends in faith” brought together by our love of music and a desire to lead the parish community in prayerful worship. We are blessed to have talented musicians on vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, flute, drums and percussion to add a contemporary sound to liturgical music. The Contemporary Choir generally rehearses on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in St. Joseph Church. New members are welcome to join! The group is open to musicians and singers of various levels and will provide mentoring experience for playing music during liturgy. Bring your voice or your instrument, and come join us in making music to praise the Lord! We’re looking to add a few Cantors to our roster of dedicated ministers. Cantors lead the assembly in song throughout the Mass, including the Psalm during the Liturgy of the Word. They are assigned to Masses on a rotating basis, generally serving 2-4 times per month. Rehearsals/coaching are generally held once every other week, but may be more frequent during the seasons of Advent and Lent or for other special occasions. Cantors do not have to belong to one of the choirs. They should be vocally confident and be able to speak clearly and distinctly. The ability to learn music independently is necessary and good vocal skills are required. Cantors should be comfortable standing before the assembly and be able to make poised gestures of invitation. The Cantor must be a singer, proclaimer and leader/animator of the assembly’s sung prayer. If you possess a vocal confidence and engaging manner, and a desire to serve the parish through song, this could be the ministry for you! To join the Contemporary Choir, Cantors or for more information, please contact: Rosemary Hadland 302-378-5800 Email: [email protected] POWER OF PRAYER Prayer is powerful…...do you have someone or something for which you would like prayers? You may phone Pat at the Parish Office or email your prayer requests to Kathy Dolde at [email protected] and they will pass them on to members of our Prayer Chain. Parishioners are also welcome to join our prayer group. All it involves is getting an email and praying for the person or petition. If you are interested, please contact Kathy. Christian Formation Don’t Forget to Register! All of the various forms necessary for Religious Education registration for our 2015-2016 Fall sessions are available online this year. Please check the parish website to find updated Religious Education Registration forms for grades 1st through 8th and the registration form for the sacraments of Reconciliation & First Eucharist. If your child has completed grade level one and is enrolling in grade level two you must complete a separate form to register for the sacramental preparation of Reconciliation and Eucharist. This is a separate process from Religious Education class registration and has a separate schedule and fee. Registrations and your preferred method of payment are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. New this year-a copy of the Diocesan “Form A: Annual Consent and Release” must be filled out and submitted for each student at the time of registration. Also, please note that this fall we will have three different sessionstwo sessions that follow a two and a half hour time frame, and one session that follows a ninety minute time frame. As in the past, confirmation of session registration will be sent via email. YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS Youth Fellowship offers young people an opportunity to meet and openly discuss faith matters, participate in exciting group activities, and learn new ways to enjoy and live life to the fullest. There are also many opportunities for young people to plan their own events and activities to share their creativity. Upcoming meetings are tonight, August 23, August 30 and September 6. Interested youth should contact Mark Winterbottom, 302-378-5800, ext. 106, or [email protected]. CHARISMATIC PRAYER MEETINGS Why not join us for the next Charismatic prayer meeting this Wednesday, August 26 at 7:00PM. We meet every Wednesday at that time in the parish complex. There will be a brief presentation on one of the charismatic gifts, and then singing and praising the Lord. Come and see what this is! If you have any questions, please call John or Cookie Ruane at 302378-2217. WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY Please join us for Bible Study on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 AM in the parish center when we break open the Scriptures for the coming Sunday. We encourage people to share how the readings touch their lives or to sit quietly and listen as others reflect on them. Facilitated by Deacon Fred Wendt and others, the conversation is easy and informative. Come when and as often as you’d like. If you have questions please call Deacon Fred, 302-378-5800, ext. 119. RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program is designed to help Inquirers on their faith journey. If you or someone you know has expressed an interest in joining the Catholic Church, please contact Deacon Tim Enright, 302-378-5800, ext. 119, or [email protected]. VOCATIONS REFLECTION In today’s first reading, Joshua tells the tribes of Israel “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” All of us are called to serve the Lord, though not in the same way. Some are called to give witness to the Kingdom of God through vows of poverty, chastity and obedience; some are called to feed God’s people at the table of the Eucharist; some are called to provide ministry through the proclamation of the Gospel. Is God calling you to serve as a priest, deacon or religious? If you think so, please call or write Father David Kelley, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113, [email protected]). Be sure to visit our website: www.CalledByTheLord.com! Social Concerns MINISTRY TO THOSE IN NEED Through your generosity last week we received $212.30 from the Poor Box at St. Joseph, and $24.00 from the Poor Box at St. Rose of Lima. Anyone interested in participating may contact Linda Sparandeo by calling 908 2164224 or emailing [email protected] MARRIAGE MOMENTS Since we're in baseball season, consider tip #1 from Becoming An All-Star Team in the Major League of Marriage by Jack & Jane Katenkamp: "They accept the idea of the sacrifice fly (making sacrifices for your mate)." Is there a sacrifice you can make today? PARENTING POINTERS "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."
