The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph
Thank you!
Living as Holy Families
There are so many people
who give of themselves for
this community in a variety of ways. On behalf of
the community, I want to
thank all those women,
men and children who
took time out of their busy
schedules to help clean
and decorate the church
for Christmas. We thank all those who worked
with our children as they participated in the
celebrations of our Advent and
Christmas seasons. We are blessed with
beautiful choirs. Working together, each of us
with our own gifts and talents, we give birth
to Christ within our community. What a grace
our community is. Merry Christmas!
Fr. Mike
The Parish Office will be closed this
week, December 28th
through January 1st.
We wish you a safe and happy
New Year’s holiday!
Start Your New Year off Right!
The familiarity of family
life can sometimes blind
us to see the goodness in
each other. This feast reminds us to open our eyes
and be “astonished” at the
goodness of each other
rather than being anxious
about our own concerns.
Families grow in holiness
when each person in the family—from parents to the
smallest child and including anyone extended the
hospitality of the family—is treated as a member of
God’s family and, therefore, holy.
This is challenging when sometimes all we can see is
each other’s faults. It takes a great deal of dying to
self to get beyond the normal, everyday annoyances
that are part of family life and see others as holy and
deserving of our honor, love, and respect. Mary and
Joseph were not free from family struggles; after all,
they lost Jesus on a trip! And when they found him
they had to struggle to understand who he was and
who he was meant to become. In doing so, they were
able to help Jesus (and themselves) grow in wisdom,
age, and grace. In this same love and care for each
other we also grow in holiness as a family.
—Living Liturgy

The Catechism of the Catholic Church
says this about the sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick:
"The special grace of the sacrament of the Anointing of the
Sick has as its effects: the uniting of the sick person to the
passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole
Church; the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in
a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age; the
forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain
it through the sacrament of penance; the restoration of
health, if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul; the
preparation for passing over to eternal life" (CCC 1532).

In this week’s Gospel we hear the
story of Mary and Joseph searching
for Jesus for three days and finally
finding him in the temple in Jerusalem. Our stained-glass window
design is taken from a painting by
German artist, Heinrich Hofmann,
entitled “the Boy Jesus in the
Temple.” It was painted in 1881.
In a 1901 article published in the London Sunday Strand,
author Kathleen Schlesinger said this about the painting:
"There is a wonderful freshness about the picture of Christ in
the Temple; a breath of youthfulness, high promise and hope
pervades the composition and coloring. The chief interest of
course centers in the boy Christ in his robes of white and gold;
His eyes, fixed on nothing earthly, shine with supernatural light
almost dazzling in its intensity."
The artist, Hofmann, said this about the painting: “... I would
like to note down a few comments on the figures in the painting
of Christ in the Temple. In the old man who sits to the right I
thought to depict someone who firmly clings to the authority of
the law, and who is amazed by the new interpretations that the
boy gives, while the sophist loves to raise captious objections...and the white haired gentleman only shows goodnatured delight in the wise boy. On the left you see the only
one who really allows the divine words to flow into his heart
(perhaps it is Nicodemus who later visited the Savior at night),
and finally we have in the background the beardless man who
turns away with contempt from the conversation his colleagues
have with a child. About my conception of Jesus, the boy, I
cannot talk - I believe that the way I have painted him
expresses everything I tried to convey."
The original painting is owned by the Art Gallery in Dresden,
Germany. Hofmann’s studio painted a second copy of this
painting that hung for many years in Mr. Hofmann's home and
was sold to Mrs. Elise Drexler of San Francisco sometime
around 1904. In 1933, it was offered for sale by Mrs. Drexler
through Gump's in San Francisco and was purchased by John
D. Rockefeller, Jr., and given to The Riverside Church in New
York City where it hangs today.

7 Consejos del Papa Francisco
para ser mejores padres y
crecer junto con sus hijos
