Ray . . . “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.”(Mk 9:37) This week Pope Francis will arrive in the United States! In addition to being known as the Successor to St. Peter, the Bishop of Rome, he also holds the title “Vicar of Christ.” In receiving Pope Francis, our nation will be receiving Christ! The readings this weekend capture the mystical union that exists between Jesus and His (ours too by baptism) Father. The Apostles are told that in receiving “one child such as this” they receive not only Him but the Father who sent Him. This is also wonderfully true of each of us: when people receive you or me, in a mysterious but concrete way, they are receiving Jesus and His Father. This is referred to in the Catechism as the Communion of the Saints. We are called to take courage and joy from Jesus’ dauntless hope, “For if the just one be the son of God, God will deliver him and deliver him from the hands of his foes.”(Wis 2:18) This confidence is also ours in Christ! May this week be an occasion to live out of this union with the Holy Trinity in the midst of all that life brings us! May our home be the shrine of peace, purity, love, labor and faith. I beg You, dear Jesus, to protect and bless all of us, absent and present, living and dead. O Mary, loving Mother of Jesus, and our Mother, pray to Jesus for our family, for all the families of the world, to guard the cradle of the newborn, the schools of the young and their vocations. Blessed Saint Joseph, holy guardian of Jesus and Mary, assist us by your prayers in all the necessities of life. Ask of Jesus that special grace which He granted to you, to watch over our home at the pillow of the sick and the dying, so that with Mary and with you, heaven may find our family unbroken in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
