Take time out to pray during this week — to hear God’s call to be a true follower of Christ. 2. Daily responsibilities can be distractions from being a true disciple of Christ. 3. What distracts me from living my faith? 4. What does my Christian faith cost me? 5. What is getting in the way of being a true follower? 6. Jesus doesn’t call the ready, he calls the willing. 7. Jesus doesn’t call the “qualified," he qualifies the one He calls. 8. Today Jesus calls you — what prevents you from following Him? 9. If you want to follow Jesus, follow without reservation, total commitment – sacrifice. Remember, you are in my prayers. Pray for one another. Time is running out to apply for the 2016 Class of Maryknoll Lay Missioners! Applications for the Fall 2016 Class will be accepted through Mid-Summer 2016. Visit: MKLM.ORG or call 914-2367-3489 for more information. FOCUS ON THE MISSION “There are so many things to do.” “We have so little time.” How many variations of these statements have you heard or even said yourself? Actually neither statement is completely true. There are many things to do in this life, but really few things that are vitally important. Working, searching, conniving, and worrying our way to “gratify[ing] the desires of the flesh,” as Paul relates in today’s second reading, are really nonproductive. So little time? When we take on the freedom that Christ offers us, we have all the time we need in this world, and even more in the next. Elisha, the prophet Elijah’s chosen servant, was slightly befuddled about what he should do. When Elijah called, he returned to bid farewell to his parents and provide food for his people. Only then did he follow. Jesus demands something different, something more of his disciples. He calls us to a single-minded determination to drop everything and follow him. Now, not later. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Jubilee Year of Mercy June 26, 2016 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Yet again in Ordinary Time, Jesus seems to demand extraordinary commitment. A would-be disciple enthusiastically volunteers to follow Jesus “wherever” (Luke 9:57). Jesus replies that “wherever” means “nowhere to rest his head” (9:58). To other candidates, Jesus brusquely denies reasonable requests to fulfill family obligations (9:59, 61), declaring that discipleship demands total commitment—now! But Jesus also demands that we not judge how others respond. When James and John volunteered to “call down fire from heaven” (9:54) to destroy an unwelcoming town, Jesus “turned and rebuked them” (9:55). All violence of any kind is completely unacceptable among Jesus’ disciples, a lesson this Jubilee Y ear of Mercy is teaching the Christian community once again. Paul’s challenge to the Galatians and us reinforces Jesus’ decisive command to James and John that they express their commitment to him through compassion for others. We must abandon the violence of “biting and devouring one another” (Galatians 5:15), choosing instead to “serve one another through love” (5:13). Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. OSV.com/yom 365 Days to Mercy CONCÉNTRATE EN LA MISIÓN “Hay tantas cosas que hacer”. “Tenemos tan poco tiempo”.
